@MD: It takes exposure to develop Freeform instincts - I didn't tune in to WFMU (online) until I was 24, yet virtually all of my new "leads" come from here. More a criticism of commercial radio nowadays (and for a long time in the DC area) and lack of imagination elsewhere.

@NGH: That's kind of like me - the pop culture mass media choices were so limited (burban VA in the 90s), I listened more to stuff my folks had in their collections (Dad's Steely Dan, Mom's The Band) - some cassettes I had for a while (Beatles "Yellow Submarine", early early Shania) - post-Black Album Metallica was about the heaviest edgiest stuff you could get everywhere. Not till I started driving and listening to the classic rock station did I start to get an appreciation for "catalogue" tracks and really get into the history and evolution of great music. In the privacy of my car, I was able to make it my "own".

I was fortunate enough to have Much Music, an OK college radio station, Internet forums, and a mother who did merchandising for a department store record section. My parents didn't really listen to everything and my older brother liked Metallica, Steve Miller, Boston, and then Garth Brooks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm

Avatar 🧩 Swag For Life Member 4:15pm

True geezerette, I was still pretty familiar with Classical in my teens, even before driving (music lessons helped give exposure to that), and we still have a great terrestrial Classical station in the DC area. But even that classic rock station is gone now! The Arrow/The Globe switched format in spring '09, and commercial terrestrial was dead to me. I got XM in the car and (just happened) to first listen to FMU around the same time. Liberation!

i was touched by my father's gift though. i didn't think he gave a shit.
Avatar 🧩 Swag For Life Member 4:22pm
Matt from Springfield:

Critical albums in shaping my taste at 16 were still from my parents CD stash: Al Stewart's "Time Passages" (1978) and The Beatles "White Album" (1968). Not only for the songs and their styles, but the wonderful SEQUENCING on those albums - the way one song gave way to another is just amazing on both of those, and it really helped define a "concept" album to me and appreciate the little details like that. I took a more broader journey after getting deep into those albums. It's why I really mean it when I appreciate a good DJ segue - the sequencing is important, too :)
