You stole my opening line, Mr C. (You said it better.)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:05am doctorjazz:

Figured I'd check out WWOZ, they have a listing for the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. I know it is a truism, but there really is NO JAZZ at the festival (well, not NO JAZZ, maybe 1%-Kenny Barron and The Jazz Epistles, with Abdullah Ibrahim and Hugh Masekela will be there). I went twice in the 90's, it was true then as well, but not quite as dramatically as this schedule).
Avatar 9:07am annie:

some day i'll make it there. maybe this year

Busted! Can't be trusted!
Avatar 10:03am Jason Elbogen:

Hey Doug - I first thought from today's shifting graphics that you were doing a cassettes-only show. I'm assuming from the sound quality that that's not the case...

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:03am doctorjazz:

I'm not sure Pence is crazier than the Donald, but that means he may actually be able to get more stuff passed, a scary thought.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Doug Schulkind:

The sound quality is still pretty shitty, though, Jason. I am no fidelity freak.
Avatar 10:05am Jason Elbogen:

But no hiss!
Avatar 🥁 10:07am βrian:

Now I recall a phrase from my beginning spanish text:
Pescado sin cilantro es pecado.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Jeff Golick:

I was lost but now I'm found.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:10am doctorjazz:

Blythe also had his In The Tradition band which did a great job with "regular" jazz
Avatar 10:12am Ike:

@Glenn, I don't think he's actually crazier, and quite possibly he's less likely to start a nuclear war, slowly tear down the international order and bring about a new Franz Ferdinand moment, or keep a long enemies list. OTOH, Doctorjazz makes a good point. Oh and the "mother" stuff is creepy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Stanley:

Uncle Michael - no problem but you do know that it's dependant on doing your chores.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Doug Schulkind:

Nice timing, Jeff Golick!

@doctorjazz
And then there's Amiri Barka's poem "In the Tradition: For Black Arthur Blythe." Heard him perform it live with David Murray and Steve McCall. Mindblowing evening it was.
Avatar 10:16am glenn:

true believers are always the scariest loonies, in my opinion.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:17am Brian in UK:

@Ike I believe the car that carried Franz Ferdinand's killers drove up next to him but overshot and had to back up. Still did the job.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:19am doctorjazz:

I saw the old In The Tradition band a few times (loved that band), but that show with the poem and David Murray sounds amazing!
  10:21am Mr C:

Arthur Blythe was a very nice man, as well..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Doug Schulkind:

@doctorjazz
There is a recorded version of the poem on this record: www.discogs.com...

An insanely great record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Doug Schulkind:

@Mr C
I have been reading that about Blythe since his death. I learned that he was a rather soft spoken fellow, but one who stood up to aggression and injustice (especially with the cops in L.A. in his formative years).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Jeff Golick:

Ogun is a label that to me = buy on sight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Doug Schulkind:

My friend and hero, Listener Hugo from Norway, has a complete set of Ogun on Vinyl.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Jeff Golick:

@Brian @ 9:46 -- have seen @listener james on the Twitter a bit this week, so he's up and about.
  10:25am Mr C:

He was a little spacey, but a gentle soul. I crossed paths with him several times during his Columbia years..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Little Danny:

Good morning everybody, I'm here, functioning barely. What happened last night?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Jeff Golick:

I think the correct phrase, Doug, is "the vinyl." Listener Hugo is a giant.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:26am doctorjazz:

Listener James was on some boards this week, think he's posted that he's busy with work stuff, though.

Isn't the proper phrase, "the vinyls...?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Doug Schulkind:

@Mr C
Kevin was a little Spacey, too.

Good morning, Barely Functioning Danny! Can I get you some coffee?
Avatar 🥁 10:34am βrian:

I can't help but read that as Cannonball Adderall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Doug Schulkind:

That is ur-Philly Joe Jones right there.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:39am doctorjazz:

Hey, Little Danny, hung over from last night's show?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Doug Schulkind:

This Metamorphosis was record live almost exactly 40 years ago (2/26/77)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:40am doctorjazz:

Arthur Blythe is one of those artists who got a Columbia contract for a short while, if I remember correctly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Doug Schulkind:

Listener James from Westwood just retweeted a hilarious cat video, so we know he's OK!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:41am doctorjazz:

Lenox Avenue Breakdown was major label, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Doug Schulkind:

@doctorjazz
I believe he was under contract with Columbia for seven years.
  10:42am Listener Gregory:

Very sad about Arthur Blythe. I remember listening to him back in the day when you wondered if jazz was going to become an adjunct of disco or something. His flame was always burning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Doug Schulkind:

I have always told the story in my head that it was Columbia that made Blythe drop his stage name "Black Arthur." There is no factual basis to this notion, I just imagined that a major label would've been behind Blythe's change in name on his LPs. Anyone know if this might possibly be true?

So glad you're here, Listener Gregory. Blythe had been living with increasingly aggressive Parkinson's for over a decade. To the extent that endings can be good, I am glad he is at rest.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:47am Brian in UK:

Thanks for james updates. Not a social psychopath sorry, media type. So Twitter and Facebook are foreign lands to which my passport has no interface.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Jeff Golick:

PS. Metamorphosis and The Grip were recorded at the same time/venue/gig.
Avatar 🥁 10:53am βrian:

@BUK: I know what you mean. Engaging the world via corporate tracking entities strikes me as surreal.

On the other hand, I did follow twitter feeds during the Wisconsin labor protests, since the right ones were accurate and *way* ahead of conventional media sources.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Doug Schulkind:

There is some major guitar badassery happening on this Super Djata cut. MAJOR.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Little Danny:

Another massive, dense groove here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Rich in Washington:

I used to swear by those 'Rainbow' generic tapes as a kid. One reason was that our mom could get them from work nearly at cost. The other was that they seemed really durable. Eventually they went downhill. I think they got bought out by some crappy consortium.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Andrew Waterloo:

@Doug, I never understood the need to have 320 over VBR. For me, it's been as long as it's not 128 or 196.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Uncle Michael:

I use massive external drives and File Explorer. I don't "manage" my library at all.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:46am Artie Haywire:

@doctorjazz - Sometimes it's just a simple as the machine forgetting to use the right audio output device. if you're in for an upgrade, there's a wide range of nice sounding USB DACs on the market these days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Uncle Michael:

I use lots of different playbak option, including Foobar2000.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Jeff Golick:

@Rich: ha, and yup.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO:

We seem to be stuck in 1972. Uncle Michael promises to take you way back to 1971 on today's Hinky Dinky Time. You might as well go. You're up to date on all your immunizations.

Arto Lindsey does a fine cover of "Simply Beautiful".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Andrew Waterloo:

Foobar allows me to write prepared scripts for moving and creating files based on Tags.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:47am doctorjazz:

Yeah, UM, I rebooted. Use JRiver for music, I believe my antivirus (Kaspersky) "cleaned" the JRiver, and I have no sound since, not with JRiver, Foobar,Windows Media Player, nada.
Avatar 🥁 11:48am βrian:

Well, as it happens, March 31 is World Backup day.
Make sure your backup drive is in good shape — and bootable if possible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Uncle Michael:

I guess I do rely a lot on Logitech Media Server, and that scans and builds a database.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:48am doctorjazz:

@Artie Haywire-I'm a geek, use an external DAC, Geek Out Special Edition.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Doug Schulkind:

I need someone to come hold my hand as I transition away from iTunes as my library infrastructure. I am just too wussy to do it by myself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Rich in Washington:

I think the real reason behind iTune's continued progressive uselessness is that Apple just wants to turn it into a portal for the store and for paying for access to streams. They could care less about your collection of digital files.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Jeff Golick:

Might have to look at Foobar, then. I believe that, instead of crossword puzzles and word-finds, trying to learn a new bit of software will keep dementia at bay, for a time...
Avatar 🥁 11:49am βrian:

I so prefer the Irreverent Al.
  11:49am Maggie B.:

Oh this is so perfect as I lay here with this horrible cold. ThAnks Doug.
Avatar 11:49am northguineahills:

All of my various blank tape, cassette and reel-to-reel, and most of my master recordings were thrown out by my landlord 3 years ago. I made the mistake of cleaning my apartment the same day they decided to clean the common area (for the first time in two years), I put the box outside my front door, and a few hours later, I hear cleaning noises in the hall, open the door, my box was gone, and workers couldn't tell me what happened to it. Not a fun day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Jeff Golick:

@Rich: you nailed it. They so clearly prioritize commerce over user convenience.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Rich in Washington:

I have an intense love/hate relationship with Apple; I have to use their hardware professionally, but as a consumer, I cannot sustain their upgrade or die business model.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Uncle Michael:

Foobar is just a player, albeit a good one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Uncle Michael:

Love "once I had a secret love" quoted on the sax at the beginning of this Billy Paul.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Jeff Golick:

@UM: it *was* that LMS thing you were trying to help me with, for remote listening...
Avatar 11:51am hyde:

@ngh argh, that is tragic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Rich in Washington:

and don't even get me started on IOS. I've been iPhone and iPod free for years now and loving it.
Avatar 🥁 11:52am βrian:

The last PB updates amounted to a complete and total face-plant. No thought given to professional users.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Uncle Michael:

That's right, Jeff.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:52am Artie Haywire:

Home library is mainly managed with Tag&Rename, File Explorer, and some backup sync scripts. Playback with Logitech Media Server (oldie/goodie), playback UI by iPeng on iPhone/iPad. If I was building all today, I'd be looking at Rune or Roon server and little build-yr-own devices.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Stanley:

This would make a nice segue into the show that follows next.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Jeff Golick:

@Rich, what's your iPod now? Phone?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Doug Schulkind:

Chicken Soup for your ears, Maggie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Doug Schulkind:

And your ears, too, northguineahills!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Uncle Michael:

Satnley isn't incorrect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Uncle Michael:

I meant to type "Satanley".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Rich in Washington:

That's awful NGH. I am sorry to hear. I had something like that happen a few years back. My wife confused a large tote of reel to reel tapes with a similar looking tote of VHS tapes bound for the Goodwill bins.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:54am doctorjazz:

Roon does sound appealing, but it ain't cheap.
I like Foobar, but JRiver is my favorite (not free, though)
(I'm back to LP's and CD's for now...)

Another great show for the books, thanks Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Rich in Washington:

@Jeff: currently using my android phone with Pulsar, which is simple enough for use in the car.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Stanley:

UM - surely St Anley?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:54am doctorjazz:

and Neil Young's Pono Player, which I like a lot.
Avatar 11:54am northguineahills:

I haven't upgraded my iTunes in four years. The updates just fudge everything up 80% of the time, and it works fine as is, so there is no need. It's the same reason I haven't updated my iPhone in five years.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:54am Artie Haywire:

@doctorjazz - Birds of a feather. I really like my GOV2!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Uncle Michael:

Neil Young's Hellno player is still being supported?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Rich in Washington:

I use an ftp-like utility called Commander to transfer songs from my macs to my phone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Webhamster Henry:

@ngh arrrgh! I purged a lot of cassettes but still have a few hundred left. My tragedy is that I slimmed down my vinyl and am often looking for stuff that is gone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Doug Schulkind:

My beloved darling Jessie and I don't have "a song," but if we had "a song," this would be "our song."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Uncle Michael:

See you all in the next room! Thanks, Doogie.
Avatar 11:56am northguineahills:

Ouch, Rich! At least I had some faceless workers hired by my less then cordial landlord as the villain in my case. If my wife did that, I'd would at least be able to get out of cleaning the apt for a year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Jeff Golick:

We should do this again, soon. Maybe next Friday? Thanks, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Jeff Golick:

That's sweet, Doug.

And condolences to @ngh and @Rich.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Stanley:

Another wonderful, interesting and enjoyable show.
Doug......... yeah.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Doug Schulkind:

It's a date, Jeff Golick. I will bring the Chianti, you bring the breadsticks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Jeff Golick:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm Dave in Vermont:

Thanks, Doug. Great show again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm Rich in Washington:

northguineahills: at least in the case of my sweetie, I had clearly ignored her admonitions to separate all the stuff, so had to suffer the cconsequences.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm Doug Schulkind:

(cough cough cough) Thanks, Dave! Thanks everybody!
