This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

On this psychedelic day, Explorers Room would like to invite you to participate in a science experiment from your own home. All you need is a laughing string! To be elaborated upon shortly I'm sure with the aid and guidance of Henry Jacobs and his team

I know Paul is on that track Scraps, but I don't think I ever heard of Mick being in on it – is that a thing to know?

I second that query Cap'n
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm
doctorjazz:

Yeah, Doug, how's the papers and exams going?
Avatar 7:39pm
Flash Strap:

Kevin Ayers is such a weirdo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm
Little Danny:

To my knowledge this is the first time I've actually heard Kevin Ayers. Is he always so VU-ish? I seriously dig!
Avatar 7:44pm
Flash Strap:

he's all over the place. he's like terminally lazy, but really creative. Hard to say... you should check him out. he did do a famous concert with Nico and John Cale. And a some stuff with Eno.
Avatar 7:46pm
Flash Strap:

I really like Ayers' Whatevershebringswesing and a lot of Bananamour, but have sort of struggled with a lot of the rest of it. But I can't stop coming back to what I like, I'll say that
Avatar 7:47pm
Flash Strap:

Maybe my favorite Seeds song here. Some of the best Sky Saxon guitar outside of Ya Ho Wa
Avatar 7:48pm
Scraps:

He's Soft Machine. Not really VU-ish as at the same time, American and England, VU and Soft Machine. To me...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm
Little Danny:

Sky Saxon's lyrics are so endearingly dumb
Avatar 7:50pm
Scraps:

Little Danny, I would think you would like =Joy of a Toy=
Avatar 7:50pm
Flash Strap:

Fair point, though his solo stuff doesn't have much of the jazz-math that a lot of Soft Machine has, at least later on. He's extremely Canterbury scene, and that's a fact we can all agree on I'm sure of it

I like Joy of a Toy too, I forgot that one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm
Little Danny:

Thanks for the tip, Scraps!
Avatar 7:52pm
Flash Strap:

@LD re: Saxon – and the delivery sells it! always the same sneering vowels, no matter the subject
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm
Little Danny:

My knowledge of the Canterbury Scene is pathetically limited
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm
Little Danny:

Totally! Saxon was forever vocally in the same gear, but oh what a gear it was
Avatar 7:58pm
Flash Strap:

One of the best Italian psych nuggets out there, this one. So spy-heavy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm
Doug Schulkind:

@Little Danny
Just finished the third of three finals. Now I have two papers to finish by Tuesday. I could sleep for a month.

@Flash Strap

Thanks and good night. I'll be here all week.

Baby Grandmothers is a record I lust after

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm
melinda:

Was there an explanation of the Laughing String before I joined the party?
Avatar 8:48pm
Scraps:

All you bongoists!
Avatar 8:51pm
Flash Strap:

haha, yes, sort of. it's an enigmatic concept that loosely maps to pot parties or whatever, but not so neatly that it's an actual metaphor. It's completely bizarre and surreal. it's my way of undermining the day and celebrating the cause at the same time, and playing a lot of classic psych sounds while disrupting them with clinical surrealism
Avatar 8:53pm
Flash Strap:

in other words, i got wrapped up in my laughing string and came up with the show between peals of absurd chuckles and belly laughs of Deep Thoughts
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm
melinda:

Ah, I get it. I like the bizarrity.
Avatar 8:54pm
geezerette:

Well done ,man! Got MY synapses in a twist.

Avatar 9:36pm

Every time I listen to the official McCartney II, I'm so depressed this isn't actually on it. It's such a trip
Avatar 9:37pm
Flash Strap:

Love McCartney II though, with or without those sweet bonus tracks
Avatar 9:38pm
Scraps:

McCartney II has some of his trippiest stuff
Avatar 9:38pm
Scraps:

heh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm
Little Danny:

Wow, this McCartney!
Avatar 9:38pm
Flash Strap:

agreed, much agreed
Avatar 9:39pm
geezerette:

This is great.
Avatar 9:40pm
Scraps:

I think much Beatles fans had given up on Paul by the time of McCartney II. It really is a underrated album
Avatar 9:42pm
Flash Strap:

Somewhere I have a rough draft of a show called The Stoned Genius of Paul McCartney that attempts to track all his wackiest stuff, but with the Beatle boys you always feel like a kid in shorts and somebody's already written the book
Avatar 9:43pm
Scraps:

I have a friend who's a Rolling Stone writer who, several years ago, picked my brain for weird McCartney solo stuff. I supplied ten tracks, I think four of which came from II
Avatar 9:43pm
Flash Strap:

along with Ram, it's the best MCartney I think. Then I guess McCartney I and Wings Wild Life and Red Rose Speedway. Would love to hear the opinions of others
Avatar 9:44pm
geezerette:

You really should do it though!
Avatar 9:44pm
Scraps:

I really like that Ras Michael album also!
Avatar 9:45pm
Scraps:

Band on the Run is still good, imo
Avatar 9:45pm
geezerette:

It's a great idea,Evan.
Avatar 9:46pm
Flash Strap:

Oh me too! one of the best Perry productions, occasionally a real rival to Heart of the Congos in my book. Which is leaving aside that Ras Michael drops classics with or without Perry in the mix. Dadawah is legend
Avatar 9:46pm
just julia:

i wanna hear your wacky mccartney show, shorts and all! no surprise, just sayin. also, not related, i love "forge your own chains" so. much.
Avatar 9:47pm

@G: You've convinced me to dust it off and see what can be done with it
Avatar 9:47pm
Scraps:

Dadawah is awesome
Avatar 9:47pm
Flash Strap:

@Julia: you just sealed the deal!

and boy oh boy, i legitimately can't hear this song enough times

tho it'd be hard to resist just playin Ram all the way through
