These fourteen acoustic recordings of klezmer music were recorded between 1917 and 1921. Kandel was a Ukranian clarinetist who settled in Philadelphia and, as bandleader, recorded over 90 performances. His core group was comprised of clarinet, cornet, trombone, piano, drums, and xylophone. The energy and joy of classic klezmer music -- equal parts Eastern exotica and primitive jazz -- weaves and bobs through these performances, simultaneously festive and martial (Kandel's stint with John Phillip Sousa left a mark on his arrangements). Such titles as "Lebedik Un Freylekh (Lively and Happy)" and "Khosn Kale Mazel Tov (Congratulations, Bride and Groom)" suggest the mood here.

A classic cassette from one of my personal favorite molam pop stars. Honey Sri'isan, from Kalasin, was a big name in her home region before becoming known nationwide as a model (she was the first and only molam to appear as a cover girl for Malai Thai Rath). This 1991 cassette contains the second of two albums she recorded for the Bangkok-based Thai-Muslim imprint Yanavy Sound. With compositions by the legendary Dao Bandon and music by A. Num Phuthai and his band, pop molam doesn't get much better than this. Sadly, Honey died just a year after this album when her pickup overturned on the way back from a concert in Sisaket. The location on the highway is still marked with a shrine where regular performances are held in her memory

Interesting conversation/argument going on between Brooklyn Pirate Watch and a pro-piracy guy from Afropop Worldwide on Twitter lately. IMHO this guy gives social justice warriors a bad name, but I'd be curious to know what all of you think. I'm pro-immigration but I think allowing disorder and chaos on the FM dial and hurting WFMU is not the answer....
