another long Drumming day, and, batting lead off, Tony! Hi!
Avatar 12:02pm
Tony Coulter:

Greetings, all! It's time to hiss and roll!!

Tony Coulter:

Heya, doctorjazz!
  12:04pm
Dean:

Had a dream this morning that you had moved to Berkeley, Tony, where you streamed your show from a retail stereo equipment space, pretty much around the clock. A fellow listener visited the space wielding a newspaper with a headline about the best pizza in the East Bay. Listener asked where one could find good vegetarian pizza in the area, suitable for freezing. Unable to answer, I awoke, at which time I promptly thought of Cheeseboard.
  12:06pm
JtotheK:

Hi Tony, hi everyone.

Hey hey, Dean and JtotheK!!

glenn:

dean has... "odd" dreams.
Avatar 12:09pm
glenn:

mine usually involve either cats, tools or rene russo.
  12:10pm
Dean:

Well, the stereo equipment store part is run-of-the-mill wish fulfillment.
Avatar 12:11pm
Tony Coulter:

Ahoy, Glenn!

I like the pizza part of Dean's dream. I hope I get it for free, at least, if I have to broadcast 24 hours a day.
Avatar 12:12pm
glenn:

and i'm pretty sure my g.f. prefers me dreaming about rene than buying something else by festool.
Avatar 12:14pm
V Priceless:

hey Tony, all
Avatar 12:15pm
Tony Coulter:

I've never had more than barely adequate stereo equipment. All my disposable income goes to stuff to play on stereo equipment, not the equipment itself, sadly.
Avatar 12:15pm
Tony Coulter:

Greetings, VP!
  12:16pm
Dean:

Cheeseboard is quintessential Berkeley. It's a co-op cheese shop, the antithesis of the Monty Python routine: they have everything. The adjacent pizza shop makes one variety of pizza per day, always vegetarian, take it or leave it. Customers queue up a quarter block out the store. A spin-off pizza joint, Sliver, takes a similar approach.
Avatar 12:17pm
glenn:

not to worry, tony. generally by the time most people can afford really good audio equipment, their hearing has deteriorated to the point where it doesn't matter.
Avatar 12:19pm
Tony Coulter:

By the way, forgot to mention that both sides of this X-Ray Pop cassette cut off abruptly, mid-song.
Avatar 12:21pm
Tony Coulter:

Not bloody likely, I know, but ... can anyone I.D. the LP underneath today's cassettes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm
Doug Schulkind:

Mmmm, cheese! Mmmmm, Tape Hiss!
  12:21pm
Dean:

I was once very proud of my stereo system, felt it sounded better than no-holds-barred systems I'd heard. Haven't been able to upgrade any components for some time. But yeah, I spend too much on the records.

Swingin' in a bit late but happy to be here! Pizza and stereo gear for all of my crew!
Avatar 12:22pm

Mr. Doug!! Hey there!
Avatar 12:24pm

and .. greetings, James!!
Avatar 12:29pm
Tony Coulter:

Talking of buying things to play on the stereo system, I recently scored a nice big batch of cassettes. You here will be the beneficiaries -- or victims, as the case may be.
Avatar 12:35pm
Tony Coulter:

Well, since no one is venturing a guess as to what today's mystery LP is, I'll spill the beans: It's Steaming Coils: "Breaded" www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm
doctorjazz:

Of course I knew that, just giving the others a chance... :)
Avatar 12:40pm
glenn:

oh right, steaming coils. i have all their stuff.
Avatar 12:40pm
Tony Coulter:

A note for all you sticklers: X-Ray Pop sometimes spells their name without a hyphen, as on the cover of this tape. I'm a hyphen man, though, so I'm using it.
  12:42pm
Dean:

Hyphen-man!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm
doctorjazz:

Audio nerd myself, tend to headphones more than anything else these days (and, too much music coming in, as seems to be the case here).
Avatar 12:50pm
Tony Coulter:

Squeaky toy solo here.....
  12:55pm
Mark Williams:

just tuning in, Tony. I had a little phase with this band years ago.
  12:56pm
Mark Williams:

Looking back at them, it's curious to think of just where the line between pop and underground was drawn for them. In the US, it was RRRecords of all people that "broke" them.
Avatar 12:57pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Mark!

RRR does seem like an odd fit for them!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:57pm

Hyphen-Man is the sort of superhero this copy editor can believe in!

JtotheK:

also part of the 'barely adequate' audio equipment club. I've had 2 numark direct drive turntables for close to 15 years. I can tell the motor on each need replacement...but hoping they hold out for a little while longer. Also hoping that area shop in town could perform the repair. Otherwise if the parts aren't available and both need replacement... ugh.
Avatar 1:01pm
βrian:

Not a big fan of hyphenated spousal names, though. I mean, with successive generations things can get really messy.
Avatar 1:02pm
Tony Coulter:

Greetings, βrian!
Avatar 1:05pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Mark: Given that RRR are mostly known for harsh noise and such, I guess it's to their credit that they wanted to release something as unmacho and "cute" as X-Ray Pop.
Avatar 1:07pm
βrian:

Lemony Hummus, by the way, from the Mediterranean Cafe.
Avatar 1:07pm
Chris from DC:

Oh hey, X-Ray Pop, nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm
doctorjazz:

x-ray pop are fun.
  1:07pm
Mark Williams:

i recall talking to the RRR guy about them, because I wanted his help in finding another LP of theirs (pre-internet struggles). I can't recall exactly the conversation, but my recollection was that he seemed to know almost nothing about them.
Avatar 1:07pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Chris!!
Avatar 1:18pm
Tony Coulter:

By the way, the crookedness on the right edge of the cover of this Cage of Reason tape is not a trick of the camera. The cover is handmade and handcut -- handcut by someone who doesn't believe in straight lines.
Avatar 1:26pm
βrian:

Why, it's artisanal!
  1:42pm
Dean:

Coincidentally, I listened to a piece by Honegger yesterday, but not Pacific 231.
Avatar 1:43pm
Tony Coulter:

The track up next is a rather surprising cover for these guys....
Avatar 1:43pm

hey, i'm sitting in the back of the room..!! see me, teach?

So, next week I'll be debuting a new feature on this show: the weird-records-from-my-basement hour. I've got many boxes of strange LPs down there and I need to plow through them -- have barely heard a lot of them myself. I'm sure some of them are actually unknown gems -- others are probably just ... different.

Not bad crazy, I hope....
Avatar 2:30pm

Just kind of weird.
  2:31pm

You're calling it weird-records-from-my-basement for one reason: the hyphens.
Avatar 2:32pm
Tony Coulter:

Yes: I was jonesing for hyphens.

Hmm. Comments and the accuplaylist stopped working for me at the end of the show, for some reason. So I'm saying my goodbyes now! See you next week....
