Apropos to hear from SMERSH the day a James Bond dies. And hey, Wayne Butane. Lookin' forward to this one!

Tony Coulter:

Heya, James!

Very true re Smersh!
Avatar 12:03pm

Tho, of course, SMERSH was a real organization, not just a Bond invention: en.wikipedia.org...

Oh, forgot to mention: The Smersh cassette is the green one on the left in the playlist pic.
Avatar 12:13pm
Tony Coulter:

Also, I'm wagering someone will be able to ID the LP jacket underneath today's cassettes, despite the fact that only a small part is visible. Guesses, anyone?

Hey Tony! My guess is Blancmange...
Avatar 12:19pm
Tony Coulter:

Heya, Yvang!

Nope, it's not Blancmange. But it is a pretty well known '80s album.

Glad you like it, Mayuko! Seems to be really obscure too, so I'm happy to be able to air it.

Dean:

The etymology of the word "clown" is more knotted up than a balloon animal! This reminds me of a birthday present a bunch of us pitched in to acquire for a buddy of ours when he turned 25 (over 30 years ago). We hired an actor to dress up as Mr. Klün, a clown with an Eastern European temperament, and shadow our buddy for the entire day. When we took him out to lunch, Mr. Klün joined us. And so forth.
Avatar 1:41pm
Tony Coulter:

Mr. Klün! I like it!

I read that Ringling Bros. finally folded up their tents after nearly 150 years. Expect to see a lot of clowns on street corners with 'will clown for food' signs.
Avatar 1:43pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Rich!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm
Rich in Washington:

a clown sprays your windshield with an impossibly giant seltzer bottle he'd somehow had hidden in his coat. Another clown wipes your window down with a large pair of polka dot boxer shorts. You suddenly realize they were yours.

Dean:

My favorite clown: http://cdn1.walkerartcenter.org/static/cache/62/62456acef6d6e28c541098de18d322d0.jpg
Avatar 1:47pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: So you're saying that now that Ringling Bros. has closed, clowns will be forced to become squeegee men?
  1:47pm
Dean:

There's always public office.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm
Rich in Washington:

It's the clownfall of western civilization.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm

"The Golden Yawn"
  1:49pm
Dean:

Isn't it, Rich?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm

I don't think it's a coincidence that in the months leading up the the US presidential election, there was a deluge of scary clown sighting stories.

By the by, there are no track titles listed on this cassette.

I remember these Verbal Advantage ads!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm
Rich in Washington:

little tiny bits of Negativland in there.
Avatar 2:10pm
Tony Coulter:

I would think all Negativland fans would have to also like Wayne Butane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm
Rich in Washington:

I have the feeling Wayne made this with two cassette decks, similar to early Cassetteboy. 1995 sampling technology was really tedious and computers weren't really good at cutting up audio yet.
Avatar 2:12pm
Tony Coulter:

Definitely operating in the same ballpark, I'd say.
Avatar 2:12pm
Tony Coulter:

Ngeativland and Butane, I mean. Funny, as neither are sports doctors.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm
Santos L. Halper:

Returned from lunch in time for a blast of Butane. Excellent...

This reminds me of this thing on public access called 'Concrete TV'
Avatar 2:31pm

In some ways this kind of pop culture cutup stuff goes back to Dickie Goodman as much as Negativland.
Avatar 2:33pm
Tony Coulter:

Or, you know, Buchanan & Goodman.

Thanks, Mayuko! See you!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm

I have that record that the 'bye bye', 'see you later' comes from. It's a bird training record, where, for some reason, the phrases bounce from one speaker to the other. Seems like that would make your poor parakeet really dizzy.
