good morning all,
visuals for you: thierrybornier.com...
  12:09am
JakeGould:

Hey Rich! Nice landscapes! By why no portraits? Given up on idolatry already?
  12:09am
rich:

not everyone in the band made it to the show for various reasons but you've got three members here:
Maâlem Hassan Ben Jaafer (sintir, vocals) Fez, Morocco
Samir LanGus (chorus, qraqeb) Agadir, Morocco
Nawfal Atiq (chorus, qraqeb) Rabat, Morocco
  12:11am
rich:

idolatry will return but there's nice abstract/minimalist landscapes in there and it struck my fancy this week
  12:11am
choggie:

Tus visuales son excelente senor Rich, muchas gracias for the eye candy!
  12:12am
rich:

members who could not make it this week for the recording:
Amino Belyamani (chorus, qraqeb) New York, NY; Said Bourhana (chorus, qraqeb) Rabat, Morocco; Ahmed Jeriouda (chorus, qraqeb, cajon) Sale, Morocco

greetings rich and innov gnawa

Who produces the band? Pat Jabbar has been involved with Moroccan music.
  12:24am
rich:

not sure who's producing the band. guess we'll find out when the record comes out.

This is just awesome. It reminds me of some time spent with B'net Houriant (sp?), a wonderful, multi generational womens group. I love this music deeply. This is the soul. Further the poetic literacy of the music is amazing and important. Thank them for me.

the one album i have of gnawa music from morocco is produced by bill lazwell, & somebody else... it's probably not them.
  12:33am
el Garree~:

Lazwell is a good guy but was in search of "the big beat". The music here is very different. Even in Morocco it's not pop but respected and understood.

el G i tend to agree but this album, "night spirit masters", sounds nearly exactly like what we're hearing now. no evident interference. straight forward production.
  12:43am
el Garree~:

Coel- Sorry but I don't understand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46am
coelacanth∅:

in other words, the music here is in fact NOT very different.

Rich@12:11: was thinking same! "abstract/minimalist landscapes"
  12:49am
el Garree~:

Coel- Not very different than Laswell's? I would suggest that our ears are "tuned" in western modes and not to what is going on live @ wfmu now.

@rich: “jake what's wrong with worshipping the only thing you really know” Worship whatever you want! But my joke was about portraits versus landscapes and it was only a relatively recent discovery for me that some people seriously think of landscapes versus portraits in the context of idolatry.

anyway good night g. (maybe you're out already; but i'm out now...)
Thanks rich! that was a Treat. Thanks innov gnawa.

good evening Rich & everyone!
THANK YOU for having Innov Gnawa on! AND posting their upcoming show dates!
i got to Prospect Park MUCH later than planned and only saw a bit of their show there :(
  1:06am
el Garree~:

Mr. Rich- Great recording of Innov Gnawa. Pass on my fine regards to the recordists. (It's tuff work...) Thanks for the posting of their upcoming events. Great "live" hour.
  1:34am
rich:

in the movie mali blues they give you the translation of this song and the lyrics are pretty great
  1:54am
el Garree~:

R- I'll have to check that out. I may even know some of the performers. Anyway, French, Wolof, Bambara and common Arabic words are helpful... well not in the usa so much. But knowing how to get food or a other stuff using a common, regional language is respectful and works. Great set BTW. I'm cooking and then getting some rest.
