A live, improvised sound collage experiment, going back 28 years, weaving mesmerizing new soundscapes from found and collected materials right in the present moment.
Pop music, speeches, live phone calls and spontaneous monologues become ambient loopy layered threads riding the liminal spaces between waking and dreaming. [On hiatus.] (Visit homepage.)

Favoriting August 9, 2017: Swirled Freely & You Have Nowhere to Go (What's Wrong?) | Download full MP4

We'll hear two more dreamy, mysterious live sound collage creations from my long-ago performances:

First, "Swirled Freely," a wordless and happy-dream-making lazy layering play of field recordings from all over the world, and pleasing electronic musics from many joymakers. Originally collaged live on radio in Austin, January 2005.

Second, a very spooky dream immersion called "You Have Nowhere to Go (What's wrong?)", a spontaneous live radio study from 2004, repurposing the sound montage elements that made the 1971 film THX 1138 so scarily transportative.

Hi Kenzo. Again, it should be a short stay for me, but my judgment is poor, so who knows

Your judgment is unimpeachable, fred.

Avatar 5:34pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I had a broken foot while making this show
Avatar 5:35pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I also had Robert's Rules of Order out from the library
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm fred:

I hope you won't go too far in reliving the experience today
Avatar 5:37pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I'm at my mercy
  5:39pm Bliss:

In the early-mid 70's, my stepdad had a little book called Robert's Rule of Law. At least that is the name I recall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm cklequ:

There's always so much happening here.........
Avatar 5:40pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Robert's Rules of Order is the most used and famous book on parliamentary procedure in the US, originating in the late 1800's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm cklequ:

Hay! I finally got my heart.
Avatar 5:40pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

cklequ: How do you feel about this muchness?
  5:41pm Bliss:

Yes, I am pretty sure that is the one. All these years I was thinking that it was Robert's Rule of Law.

I come here for the muchness.

Avatar 5:43pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

The beagle is the most famous and used dog for mistaken memories in the northeast region
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm fred:

Most places are northeast of somewhere else. Though not all are suitable homes for beagles
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm Rich in Washington:

I keep thinking this show is on at 3, my time. I am in a time zone all my own, apparently.
Avatar 5:49pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Rich, what timeshift can I do to make your listening more present-like?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm fred:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm Doug Schulkind:

Who is this Ken Zlastever I've been hearing so much about?
Avatar 6:00pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Ken Z'o Lastever
Avatar 6:01pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

This half is itself divided in halves. The second half in half an hour is a bit more challenging
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm Rich in Washington:

I love this movie so much. I love listening to it more than watching it.
Avatar 6:02pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Yes. I haven't been able to go back and rewatch it, but I've heard this show at least a couple hundred times now.
Avatar 6:04pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

For those who haven't seen it, it's George Lucas's first film, from 1971, a very comprehensive dystopian film that uses almost no exposition, relying almost entirely on the brilliant sound montage work by co-writer Walter Murch. Most of what you come to understand about this "future" world comes from your listening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Rich in Washington:

I love this show. The one back then and the one right now.
Avatar 6:05pm Dzeli:

Rather yellow
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Rich in Washington:

I think it's one of his best films. I think it's relatively austere - by today's standard's - budget made him make some really creative choices that add to the film's appeal.
Avatar 6:08pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Thank you for color interpretation, Dzeli. What was the first hour?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Rich in Washington:

It's hard to find the original version of this film. Like his Star Wars films, Lucas went back and added lots of unnecessary special effects that didn't merge well with the film's original gritty, claustrophobic atmosphere.
Avatar 6:09pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Hi again, (ghost of) fred, northguineahills, Dzeli, Ike, Bliss, cklequ, Rich, Doug, the people texting and msging and emailing me, and the shy and future others.
Avatar 6:10pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

The closest-to-original version can be found online by searching for the laserdisc version.
Avatar 6:11pm Dzeli:

Light blue. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm fred:

I haven't seen this movie.
I could go all Vizzini and say since you say I should stay I should leave, except it's too obvious.
My way is not that complicated: if I get sleepy and start yawning, I'm out instantly, because if I miss that boat I may not get another chance for hours
Avatar 6:12pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

It's a shame, the 2004 DVD version has clearer sound, and the sound is so important...but Lucas added numerous weird modern effects and changes and embellishments and didn't even label this as being a changed release.
Avatar 6:12pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Inconceivable!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Rich in Washington:

That THX-1138. He never backs off.
Avatar 6:13pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Make the correction THX
Avatar 6:14pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I wonder what Murch would think of this show. I loved his work in THX and Apoc Now and The Conversation, and Return to Oz is a favorite film of mine although there's not much sound magic there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm Rich in Washington:

I used to think Murch worked on Star Wars, due to the Lucas connection and similarity to some of the techniques heard in the film, which was actually Ben Burt, but I guess he didn't.
Avatar 6:18pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Murch didn't work on Star Wars, but some of the techniques he developed in THX 1138 got used there anyway. The walkie talkie sounds in Star Wars especially
Avatar 6:18pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Sometimes a little adjustment can make all the difference
Avatar 6:23pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I wish I could go back and remember how this felt while I was making it. It wasn't yet an hour-long show about THX-1138. It was just a thing I was doing, and I was halfway through the timeslot.
Avatar 6:25pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

My foot was broken for this one, too
Avatar 6:28pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Oh yeah, there was this recording studio downstairs from the radio station, and there was a loud band playing in there. It's in the boominess on the mic a bit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm fred:

Was it the same foot?
Avatar 6:28pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Yes, it took months to heal. It changed my life and that of many others dramatically.
Avatar 6:31pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Things turned a bit darker in my life after this show and before the one we heard in the first hour. So of course this is the darker show and the harder period one is lighter.
Avatar 6:31pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Dzeli, here's the next big color shift
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Rich in Washington:

It's also 20 degrees cooler since the program shift. How'd you do that, Kenzo?
Avatar 6:34pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

phase shift
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Rich in Washington:

I broke my foot at the end of 2016 but didn't know it until January of 2017. I was hobbling around for months.
Avatar 6:35pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I didn't get confirmation of my bone break for 3 months
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm fred:

Do you plan to do new shows or do you need to break your foot again for that to happen?
Avatar 6:40pm Dzeli:

Mine is timing out every 5-10 minutes or so and I have to reload and miss a chunk...
Darkness in the light, light in the darkness...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm fred:

Avatar 6:44pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Dzeli, that's a shame. What exact means are you using to listen?
Avatar 6:44pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

fred: I'm forced to do a new show next week!
