	6:41pm coelacanth∅: greetings Evan and Explorers ...i'll only be hearing small passages at a time for a while (i'm still working) ...i have not forgotten your Holger Czukay program. it's the first thing i thought of after i heard he checked out, when i started thinking of tribute shows. i hope he heard it! or at least knew that he was well represented in this little world, at least. i wouldn't doubt that his music gets more airplay on wfmu than on any other radio station.

	8:28pm MrFab: hyde those would be fightin words to Mrs Fab the Whovian! Esp. the David Tennant years. She is to Dr Who what others are to Star Trek/Wars. (Or what we are to Twin Peaks.)
	8:28pm hyde: huh, i never read the Dr Who comics. Dave Gibbons did a lot of the art, tht's pretty quality.
	8:30pm hyde: @MrFab haha, i know a lot of people dig it. it was never my bag--i could never get into it even when i was a sci-fi/horror loving kid in the 70's. just didn't click.
	8:37pm coelacanth∅: i have seen 3-4 episodes of dr.who. (couldn't tell you which dr.) -i enjoyed it, but i wouldn't make a point to watch it. i'm not into tv though.
	8:39pm coelacanth∅: ...i really like early star trek, but chronologically less and less until not at all. i have never had any interest in star wars - not even as a youngster when the first one hit...so i don't think star wars/trek should be lumped together!

	8:47pm MrFab: Yeah I don't even really consider the original Star Trek as serious sci-fi any more than the '66 Batman was proper superhero stuff - more like bugged-out '60s pop art. See also: The Munsters, Addams Family, Gilligan, My Mother the Car, all that surreal nonsense that died out by the '70s.
	8:47pm hyde: i saw the one last week that's like an OK Corral remix. i thought the sets were amazing and abstract--looked it up, and turns out they just didn't have enough money for real sets.
	8:48pm still b/p: About two minutes ago in the other room, Chekhov was jump-kicking his toes up to his outstretched hands...both legs at once! I don't know what else is going on in the story...not paying attention, but I think the Enterprise first-stringers are trying to mess with the minds of their foes.

	8:49pm listener james from westwood: Sounds like the second Harry Mudd episode where he's got a planet of robot women at his disposal and the crew is busy logicking them into fatal syntax errors.
	8:50pm Flash Strap: Trek is definitely bugged-out '60s pop art (so is vintage Who), but it's also (at least in intent, or as a text) a pretty serious investigation of sci-fi concepts high and low, AS WELL AS basically a Horatio Hornblower adaptation. which is what makes it so crazy awesome

	8:51pm Ike: I've been quite a Whovian in the past, but it's hard to defend or explain since the quality has varied so wildly over the years. Of course Star Trek was sometimes like that too, but w/DW the tone could vary even more intensely. Some years (like the late 70s) it was goofy and sophomoric, others (early-to-mid-80s) it was morbid and doom-y. Early 80s DW had the best synth soundtracks.

	8:53pm hyde: @Flash i have probably broke this out before, but for me though there's a lot that makes Trek great, what really makes it for me is the interplay between Shatner's ludicrous hammy acting style and Nimoy's brilliant portrayal of Spock. that dynamic for me is the key to the whole thing, whether hi or low concept.
	8:53pm melinda: @Flash agreed. When I was a kid I didn't appreciate what it was trying to do, and I think the 60s were too recent still for it to have retro aesthetic value, the art design looked ugly and stale. But I love it now.
	8:55pm melinda: @hyde yes. In the Spock documentary he talks about how his character was somewhat more animated in the pilot, and became less so in response to Shatner's, for balance.

	8:56pm Flash Strap: agreed Hyde, though - maybe I'm corny - but when i watch that stuff what really strikes me is how goood Shatner is in his pre-intentionally-kitsch phase. he's a joy to watch, and a powerfully committed performer, despite his obvious arrogance and other limitations

	9:00pm MrFab: Oh no doubt Trek had serious sci-fi intent (unlike the deliberate parody of Batman or the Munsters), with heavyweight cats like Harlan Ellison writing for it. But then the camp aspect started attracting non-sci fi fans to it. I think it was Seinfeld who did a bit about how Kirk is the male fantasy: sitting in a big easy chair, watching his giant screen tv, a bevy of min-skirted babes waiting on him...

	9:30pm ἶkε: This is great! As for Star Trek, the original is excellent but my favorite is DS9, which, like TNG, only got really good in the middle of its 2nd season. It's all up on Netflix (US). (Advice on which ones are so terrible that you MUST skip them available upon request!)

I don't know what else is going on in the story...not paying attention, but I think the Enterprise first-stringers are trying to mess with the minds of their foes.

	8:50pm Flash Strap: Trek is definitely bugged-out '60s pop art (so is vintage Who), but it's also (at least in intent, or as a text) a pretty serious investigation of sci-fi concepts high and low, AS WELL AS basically a Horatio Hornblower adaptation. which is what makes it so crazy awesome

	8:51pm Ike: I've been quite a Whovian in the past, but it's hard to defend or explain since the quality has varied so wildly over the years. Of course Star Trek was sometimes like that too, but w/DW the tone could vary even more intensely. Some years (like the late 70s) it was goofy and sophomoric, others (early-to-mid-80s) it was morbid and doom-y. Early 80s DW had the best synth soundtracks.

	8:53pm hyde: @Flash i have probably broke this out before, but for me though there's a lot that makes Trek great, what really makes it for me is the interplay between Shatner's ludicrous hammy acting style and Nimoy's brilliant portrayal of Spock. that dynamic for me is the key to the whole thing, whether hi or low concept.
	8:53pm melinda: @Flash agreed. When I was a kid I didn't appreciate what it was trying to do, and I think the 60s were too recent still for it to have retro aesthetic value, the art design looked ugly and stale. But I love it now.

I think it was Seinfeld who did a bit about how Kirk is the male fantasy: sitting in a big easy chair, watching his giant screen tv, a bevy of min-skirted babes waiting on him...
