Don't know what any of today's cassettes are -- PLEASE HELP ME I.D. 'EM!
Avatar 9/17 2:50pm
Tony Coulter:

A disclaimer for all you sticklers out there: I do have *some* idea what's on the "Home Taper Sampler" cassette, of course, but I'm not sure who some of the artists are, given that only last names appear, and I don't know any of the track titles.

Just searched "McKinney - Counting" on discogs, and it came back with one hit: A Melba Moore album.
Avatar 12:24pm
northguineahills:

Quick, did you write all of the artists' names down???!
Avatar 12:25pm
Tony Coulter:

Nah: they are collectively known as AAC, which is good enough for me. (Heya, NGH!)

Hello from the right coast, Tony, and all.
Avatar 12:27pm

Unless, I guess, the improv took place at somewhere called the AAC ... or at an event sponsored by an organization called the AAC.

So it’s audio art? Came in late. Years?
Avatar 12:33pm

Hey, JakeGould! This tape is from around '84 -- that much I know.

Makes a million times more sense than Trmup's speech to the UN today!

Well, once this show is archived and Google crunches it hopefully someone somewhere can find it and add context.

That's what I'm hoping!

Hello Tony/listeners! Enjoying the mysterious sounds of the mystery cassettes!

Greets, Yvang!

I guess in some weird way the mystery adds a bit of extra frisson.

JakeGould:

Logging in! So, are there 4 tapes in total you will be playing?
Avatar 1:08pm
Tony Coulter:

Yep -- though I'll only have time to play part of the fourth (the orangey one in the upper left).
  1:11pm
JakeGould:

Thanks for clarifying! But damn… This makes me really want to do some detective work.

Hey there, Mayuko!! Good to see you here....
Avatar 1:19pm

I'd still be very gladly listening even if this repetitive sound goes on throughout the rest of your show. Which one of the 4 tapes in the image is this?
Avatar 1:20pm
Tony Coulter:

It's the one on (your) upper right.....
Avatar 1:22pm
Tony Coulter:

The label was glued on upside down, but right way up it's a pic of an ivy-covered building.
Avatar 1:23pm
Mayuko:

Ah, I see that's what you meant by Leafy label tape, I first thought they might have been magnolia flowers.
Avatar 1:29pm
Tony Coulter:

"Frenetic destruction" -- that phrase gets repeated quite a bit. Another clue for all you sleuths.....
Avatar 1:29pm
glenn:

buena sera di italia.
Avatar 1:30pm
Tony Coulter:

Ciao, Glenn!
Avatar 1:33pm

Actually, I think the phrase "frenetic destruction" slowly morphs into "phonetic structure." Or something ... maybe....

Looking at the playlist, I'd wager a guess that Klee's given name is Mark. He made some music that's found on a few choice taper comps and also did some interesting art, a piece of which was a cover of Unsound.
Avatar 1:54pm

"frenetic instruction"
Avatar 1:56pm

@ I am the Upsetter: It seems to morph. The first time it sounded like "destruction" But then again, maybe I'm hallucinating!

Hard to say. Enjoying this show.
Avatar 1:59pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, epizootics!! Thanks for the tip -- that sounds like a good guess. I'll add "Mark" to the playlist.
Avatar 2:09pm
Tony Coulter:

Late-breaking news: Someone very much in a position to make a good guess (he believes he once owned the tape) just now suggested (on FB) that the "Leafy Label" cassette is John Oswald. I must admit it doesn't sound like Oswald to me, but I will investigate further.
Avatar 2:12pm
Tony Coulter:

I should add that he was reacting to my photos of the labels, not to the sound of the tape.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm
Webhamster Henry:

Oswald was never a frenetic destructor!
Avatar 2:27pm
Tony Coulter:

Just remembered that I have at least one more mystery tape. Oh well -- it (they) will have to wait for a future show.

This book teaches you every step, including a proven meal plan for burning fat, farting like a demon, and dropping your weight. This is a book of action. And farting. It doesn't just tell you to try harder. It tells you to fart harder. Like a hyena. Life rewards those who take matters into their own hands. And their own farts.

(I may have changed a few things there.)

The cassette on now is the one on the upper left.

I asked John about that mysterious tape he didn't recognize it as his. He'd often drop by and give me one of this tapes. They were all documented by him, not sure if that is still up on the web, but its not him. I always thought I would remember but you get old...

McKinney is Dan McKinney, later of The Original Sins.

Mark Klee (pronounced with a long e) was a musician, visual artist, and monologuist. A ton of his radio monologues can be found here:
archive.org...
  1:08pm
Eric Feinstein:

AAC stands for Allentown Arts Center. This session was recorded late at night after carrying a piano up a flight of stairs to get it up to the 2nd floor where the theater was. I recorded it on something portable, I think my JVC cassette deck that was part of a modular boombox. I think I used a cheap radio shack Mic. I later overdubbed some ethereal noises I made using two tape decks. The AAC was a community arts center that many local musicians and performers used in the 80's. It was a mecca for improv and was the space that Improvco used for many years. Sun Ra, Firesign Theater and many others performed there.
