rich:

  12:12am
Dean:

Jimmy Smith once told me to stop drinking so many martinis. I'd had two.
  12:14am
rich:

did you have a third?
  12:14am
Dean:

Nope.
  12:16am
Dean:

He was playing Catalina Bar & Grill, and he'd just arrived from London. Had a cold. Was not in the best spirits. Still, the show was beautiful.
  12:19am
Dean:

To be clear: Jimmy Smith had the cold and was not in good spirits. This was one of the several times I've heard him live. I miss him.
  12:22am
rich:

several times is nice. never saw him. got to see steve lacy several times and cecil taylor and many who are still around but there's many who i missed (julius hemphill who i was heading to see and decided i wasn't in the mood that night and then he died that week)
  12:25am

  12:27am
Dean:

I've seen Lacy a few times, too, and Cecil. David Murray a few times (once in somebody's house), Oliver Lake (same guy's house), Brotzmann a few times, etc. I missed Hemphill, too, but I've heard Marty Ehrlich.
  12:31am
zopa:

Was fortunate to see David Murray once many years ago. He brought an octet to SUNY Albany. Blew the roof off the place.
  12:38am
rich:

the large groups are always nice. saw brotzmann's chicago tentet 20 (?) years ago and it was great.
  12:41am
Dean:

Yep, me, too. Saw the Brotzmann tentet at Victo around that time. Splendid!
  12:42am
Dean:

But I also heard Full Blast c.2005 in a tiny Berkeley venue. Among the top three shows ever. Just killer.
  12:44am
