I live in a very cyclist friendly town. However, half of the bikes ride on the sidewalks which annoys the hell out of me. I always ride in the street like a real cyclist (nope, no lycra for me, but I always have my lights on and wear a helmet).

I follow all traffic signals when biking. I signal when I turn. I want my behavior to be as predictable to pedestrians, fellow cyclists, and motorists. The motorists here in Gainesville, FL are friendly to cyclists, luckily.

as a lifelong cyclist I know we're hated on more. so I just try to be invisible and not bother anyone. and keep doors' width away from double parked cars. and breeze behind pedestrians, they never walk backwards. really all three do whatever the hell they want to, but cyclists are the ones most hated. except for delivery ppl on electric arrow bikes

cars go in bike lanes without checking for cyclists, pedestrians cross intersections against do not walk signs, and cyclists mostly go through all red lights unless a cop is there. the electric bikes do everything wrong, mostly going the wrong way

@Roberto: I'm a pacifist, but I've come to fisticuffs w/ wrong-way and sidewalk cyclists (usually starts w/ me giving them a verbal warning, but it's something I've very passionate about. I nearly killed myself on my bike, and I was obeying the laws. Anything that keeps your behavior predictable in transit makes it safer for everyone.

NYC is really safer than NJ to bike - in NY they can't get that much faster in between lights. In NJ it's a race to kill you once the light hits green and they put the pedal to the metal! they go so much faster and I been honked/yelled at/threatened/buzzed & bumped in NJ many more times over

@the good Rev: Yeah, I ride aggressively and fast but obey all traffic laws and yield to (even clueless) pedestrians and give motor vehicles room (unless they don't give me any). The worse altercation I've been in w/ a car is when I clipped a mirror b/c it was hogging the bike lane. Guy was mad, and got out, but I told him he had plenty of room and shouldn't be in the bike lane. How I didn't crash is beyond me.
