This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

hiya chresti!

This is from a mostly-unreleased, widely bootlegged soundtrack to some Jane Birkin film I've never seen or heard of in any other context

hi. seems a good soundtrack for my reread of Kirby's New Gods books!

hi hyde, hi James!

Basil Kirchin is so good – to me this sounds almost like a Sven Libaek arrangement, but with Roger Roger's touch on the Ondes Martenot
Avatar 7:13pm
hyde:

more on New Gods: i requested this from the library, and when it came it turned out to be a b + w reprint. i was bummed at first because the color is such a big part of my memory of these books, but as i read on the pencils seem somehow even more amazing in b + w.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:14pm
chresti:

Have you seen any of these films?
Avatar 7:14pm
Flash Strap:

that's interesting - i'm a big lover of b&w but Kirby is such a technicolor guy in my mind
Avatar 7:15pm
Flash Strap:

no i haven't, though I have seen the original Emannuelle film, which this one is sort of ripping off
Avatar 7:15pm
Flash Strap:

it has a pretty good soundtrack too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm

Hi Evan and Explorers!
Avatar 7:15pm

@Flash yeah exactly!
Avatar 7:16pm
Flash Strap:

Hi Doc! how goes it?
Avatar 7:17pm
hyde:

i confess i have seen a number of Emmanuelle films, but not this one
Avatar 7:18pm
Flash Strap:

most of these films are hardly films, not really worth seeing (even considering their intended utility) but some of them are surprisingly artful, well-shot. I know this one was filmed in Kenya, which is probably interesting and somewhat hair-raising
Avatar 7:19pm
Flash Strap:

the original is decent filmmaking imo. makes a pretty wild read from a postcolonial perspective, actually
Avatar 7:22pm
hyde:

crap, i totally forgot about the Tuesday show! there's some weekend listening.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:37pm
chresti:

the primitive london 5 track reminds me of the scene in "under the skin" where, she's leading her prey (as she's disrobing) to get liquified, which also reminds me of Noh theater music
Avatar 7:38pm
Flash Strap:

i REALLY need to finally watch that one

Howdy!
Just watched "Onibaba", a b&w Japanese film from 1964.
Extremely beautiful and terrifying with a Noh-like score.
Avatar 7:50pm
Flash Strap:

i love the score for Onibaba SO MUCH. what a great film
Avatar 7:51pm
Flash Strap:

i'm actually working on the cover to a new Mike Cooper LP that is 1/2 a new score to Onibaba that he composed and plays along with the film at live events
Avatar 7:51pm

how great is the lead actress in that film, btw?

I have not seen it, I must at once!
Avatar 7:54pm

i remember watching a featurette where the director was talking about the film analytically, he was really wonderful but it was so funny; everything was sex.

"The grass represents sex"
Avatar 7:55pm

She's riveting! Actually I thought they both were. The whole thing is riveting. Seeing it with a live score would be a powerful experience.
Avatar 7:56pm

the original Emannuelle is in Bangkok, I think
