You're just taking a chance. I love to improvise, but in the context of what I know is solid. I used to jump away from what I had planned and just go totally insane. And two out of maybe four of those would work. But you just can't do that today.  0:15:48 (MP3 | Pop-up)

It'll be happening here Wednesday 5-7pm Eastern Time!
Avatar 8/30 5:06pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

It will be a gradual climb to a dense peak
  8/30 5:08pm Bliss:

I saw a poster from far away, It pulled my attention to it, though I could not tell what it was about. I rode my bike over there to see it. It was a Tori Amos poster. I'd never heard of her. Bought the album with Cornflake girl on it. Amazed at first listen.
Avatar 8/30 5:09pm mossy lightouse:

Hello!! I am already quite astonished! Music, and sound overall, still expand beyond familiarity and explanation for how they become what and how they are!
Avatar 8/30 5:11pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I was a concert photographer. Her arrangement was that the photographers would show up before the show to a special room where she writhed around at a piano silently for 5 minutes. So, yes, image conscious person.
Avatar 8/30 5:14pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

This Shining Star song was playing in a cooperatively run cafe recently
Avatar 8/30 5:15pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Umm with lyrics and forward movement
Avatar 8/30 5:16pm Carmichael:

What made me think that your previous show was your final one?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8/30 5:16pm fred:

A guy I know did a series taking picture of performers before and after shows. If they looked the same, something was wrong
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8/30 5:16pm Rich in Washington:

when Jerry passed away, I watched both Hardly Working and Slapstick of Another Kind, more or less at the same time.
Avatar 8/30 5:17pm northguineahills:

The Saint-Saëns they play at the France movie at Epcot (well, at least in the 80s).
Avatar 8/30 5:18pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Carmichael, very perceptive. Last week I played an actual last-ever (from 2005). It was really the end.
Avatar 8/30 5:18pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Primer, amazing $7000 DIY movie
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8/30 5:19pm Rich in Washington:

The makers of Primer also made the amazing Upstream Color.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8/30 5:20pm Rich in Washington:

I need to see Primer again. I enjoyed it, but it made my head hurt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8/30 5:20pm Parq:

Huh huh. He said "Irwin's thingy".
Avatar 8/30 5:20pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Upstream Color, amazing amazing. After it was over I just sat in the dark room for two hours thinking and feeling about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8/30 5:20pm Rich in Washington:

This is lovely, Kenzo.
Avatar 8/30 5:21pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I'm going to try to start a conversation about each sample today. Blade Runner! I'm seeing a 4k restoration in a theater tomorrow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8/30 5:21pm Rich in Washington:

I came into the middle of Upstream - my wife was already watching it - so she wanted to watch it over with me. It was like a loop. I think I need to see that one again too.
Avatar 8/30 5:21pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Jerry Lewis! Umm yeah he's gone. His self-direction skills were impressive.
Avatar 8/30 5:22pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Stone Roses, umm that was a really fun documentary even if they can't get their aspect ratios straight
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8/30 5:23pm Stanley:

Just switched over. Hello.
Avatar 8/30 5:24pm Ike:

EVIL ice cream truck is EVIL and must be catapulted into the sun
Avatar 8/30 5:25pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

But the Microsoft loop, that's from the Regurgitation show from around 2002, borrowed a laptop and used the built-in sounds and maybe Media Player 6.4
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8/30 5:25pm fred:

Was that the famous Mr Softee music? I've never heard it, but it seems to fit the description
Avatar 8/30 5:26pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Oh yeah, I think I heard Mr. Softee in there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8/30 5:26pm listener james from westwood:

Hypnotic blend. Watts is coming in like a spell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8/30 5:27pm Dave in Vermont:

hear
Avatar 8/30 5:28pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Oh I like playing with volume sliders
Avatar 8/30 5:29pm northguineahills:

I still don't miss the Mr. Softee jingle, give it another year and I'll wax nostalgic.
Avatar 8/30 5:29pm Ike:

Yep, that was it. But you can't get the full effect until you listen to it blaring out of a speaker on every street in your neighborhood on a loop 634,928 times with no other sounds except traffic and maybe a few dumb screaming children while your own sweaty hands desperately grasp to jam the earbuds in deeper... deeper... to blot out the wretched, wretched repetition. And maybe the men in the white coats coming to drag you away.
Avatar 8/30 5:33pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

We're in a long moment with Other Shapes Are Possible from a year ago, with Primer added in...
Avatar 8/30 5:33pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Little Murders: Best wedding scene ever
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8/30 5:34pm fred:

@Ike: it did seem like hearing it on a loop could drive someone crazy. Mayuko reported seeing another fake truck a couple of weeks ago, with the same music
Avatar 8/30 5:35pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Chasing Sleep, nice low budget
Avatar 8/30 5:40pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

My So-Called Life, remixed more in "My So-Called Mind." I always appreciated the layered production
Avatar 8/30 5:40pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Trying to remember who the atmospheric thing is, it's not Sigur Ros...
  8/30 5:46pm Bliss:

"The operations are a resounding success. But when someone starts killing his beautiful patients, Dr. Roberts becomes suspicious and starts investigating."
Avatar 8/30 5:47pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Hey, that movie! What's it called?
Avatar 8/30 5:47pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

All the Crichton stories are ridiculous and full of holes but have great premises about the failure of technology
  8/30 5:47pm Bliss:

Avatar 8/30 5:49pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Russian Ark! The single-take movie
Avatar 8/30 5:49pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

All those moments will be lost in time like tears in rain
Avatar 8/30 5:50pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Using the Windows loop as a cleanser
Avatar 8/30 5:50pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Let me tell you about my mother
Avatar 8/30 5:51pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Hmm, did Brian Eno make this Windows sound?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8/30 5:52pm Rich in Washington:

He made one of them. I cannot remember which. Robert Fripp did sessions for another one, but I don't think they were used.
Avatar 8/30 5:52pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Now we're back in Conduct the Symphony of Your Life
Avatar 8/30 5:53pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

First time this Bryan Adams song on WFMU
Avatar 8/30 5:53pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

But not this Bryan Adams song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8/30 5:53pm Rich in Washington:

Eno: Windows 95
Fripp: Windows Vista
Avatar 8/30 5:54pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

The Fripp Vista sessions were great to watch. Esp. the corporate nonsense talk about it.
Avatar 8/30 5:54pm steve:

[nods approvingly]
Avatar 8/30 5:54pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Oh here comes the Joe Frank
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8/30 5:55pm Rich in Washington:

Fripp/Vista: Yes. I loved that. The talkback was almost more engrossing than Fripp's soundscaping.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8/30 5:56pm listener james from westwood:

Between Watts and Frank this is bringing back memories of sitting in my car listening to the last bits of their broadcasts on WFMU in the 90s, unable to leave without hearing the end.
Avatar 8/30 5:57pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

So this is Joe Frank with Kate Bush
Avatar 8/30 5:57pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I really ought to release video of the making of this one of these days
Avatar 8/30 5:58pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

They didn't even use the Fripp music
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8/30 5:59pm Rich in Washington:

Do it Kenzo! Do it all in one take, like Russian Ark!
Avatar 8/30 6:02pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

So this is Lou Reed with Kate Bush
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8/30 6:02pm listener james from westwood:

Oooh, I think I remember this Reed loop getting play in winter 2013. (Fucked up time for me; this show was actually a weekly touchstone of unreality amid hard reality back then.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8/30 6:04pm listener james from westwood:

It's a great candidate for looping!
Avatar 8/30 6:04pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Well EVERYTHING is
Avatar 8/30 6:05pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I may yet do a call-in live show on a Wednesday
Avatar 8/30 6:07pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Reincarmichael
Avatar 8/30 6:09pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

So this is Joe Frank now from 1986 with Lou Reed back to the 2013 usage instead of the now
Avatar 8/30 6:09pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

"A weekly touchstone of unreality amid hard reality" - I may quote that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8/30 6:11pm fred:

I love the Titanic bits floating up once in a while. As usual, I repeat myself
Avatar 8/30 6:14pm still b/p:

I'm frazzled and weary, so, to use a phrase I loathe, "you might think" that overlappaloopamashacrashups wouldn't be the suitable sensory choice for me. But it DO be welcome and pleasant remedy like.
Avatar 8/30 6:15pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

What there's no crashing here, it's all about the beauty
Avatar 8/30 6:21pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Avatar 8/30 6:22pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Lost in America, great movie by Albert Brooks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8/30 6:23pm Rich in Washington:

There were a lot of Brooks' movies available on Netflix briefly. I got to revisit that one and Real Life.
Avatar 8/30 6:25pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I've never dared replay Our Jill before
Avatar 8/30 6:29pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Rocky Horror soundtrack was big in my childhood
Avatar 8/30 6:30pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@Rich: Modern Romance! One of Stanley Kubrick's favorite films, inspiring Eyes Wide Shut
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8/30 6:31pm fred:

I had this Nina song stuck in my head all week after dreaming of it over the weekend
Avatar 8/30 6:33pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I made a remix of this Young MC song for a recent dance I hosted. Took out the guy and just made it this sensual thing with the lady
Avatar 8/30 6:33pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

May we all have the last notes of Rocky Horror Picture Show in our heads after this. Sadly no Susan Sarandon singing here
Avatar 8/30 6:34pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Uh oh, more Robert John "Mutt" Lange coming up
Avatar 8/30 6:35pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I am sad all music of the world isn't like this
Avatar 8/30 6:35pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I keep using that Eno Windows bit like a windshield wiper
Avatar 8/30 6:37pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Equinox, one of my favorite movies. I just love Alan Rudolph films
Avatar 8/30 6:38pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

So, this is classical Russian music with the woman in the Young MC song
Avatar 8/30 6:38pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

First ever Nickelback on WFMU
Avatar 8/30 6:39pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

So this is Mutt Lange's Nickelback song with Young MC beats
Avatar 8/30 6:40pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Does anyone else find these sounds pleasing? It seems crazy that anyone would. Except I really do.
Avatar 8/30 6:40pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I mean this is a little irritating right now but I still like it
Avatar 8/30 6:40pm steve:

yes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8/30 6:41pm Santos L. Halper:

Crazy pleasing. Except maybe the nickleback
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8/30 6:41pm Rand al'Thor:

I like the piano track in the backing right now. It's a nice mix with everything else.
Avatar 8/30 6:42pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

My second time trying that Nickelback out. It's harsh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8/30 6:42pm fred:

The Nickelback was a little too dominant. I know it's a first, but it could have used something else layered in
Avatar 8/30 6:42pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I really want to remember what this piano piece is
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8/30 6:42pm Gary:

You're right! I would have thought at least one WFMU DJ might have played Nickelback previously, but ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8/30 6:42pm Rand al'Thor:

I think the last time you used that Nickelback track you kept changing its speed.
Avatar 8/30 6:43pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I think my first go at Nickelback was a little better but plenty irritating. It was mixed with Shania Twain (also Mutt Lange)
Avatar 8/30 6:43pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Mmm MP3 artifacts. The archive version I'll post just before the show ends will be way better quality than this live stream.
Avatar 8/30 6:44pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Nickelback brings out the lurkers. Hi Santos and Gary!
Avatar 8/30 6:45pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Aha, Sergei Yevtushenko.
Avatar 8/30 6:46pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

So this is Sergei Yevtushenko and Tori Amos and Shane Carruth from Primer
Avatar 8/30 6:48pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Feel free to use a clicky star on the episode, send me email at ken at lastever dot org, even use the unreliable and hardly future-proof Facebook platform: www.facebook.com... 'cause I'd love to hear from you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8/30 6:51pm fred:

I might skip next week's show: a whole week of meetings and occasional addresses by our Dear Leader will probably have my brain in hibernate mode after three days
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8/30 6:52pm Rand al'Thor:

Thank you, as always, for the show, Ken.
Avatar 8/30 6:52pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

First ever Velvet Cactus Society on WFMU
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8/30 6:52pm Rand al'Thor:

Gonna listen back to what I missed in this episode once the archive hits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8/30 6:54pm Santos L. Halper:

Thanks Kenzo!
Avatar 8/30 6:54pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Exhaling
Avatar 8/30 6:55pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

This is the exit music now, so we can talk and breathe and hug each other and stuff
Avatar 8/30 7:02pm mossy lightouse:

Thank you! It has been a wyrding, strengthening, redialing helpful show! I am very thankful to have heard and felt it. Enjoy your experiences with the film showing tomorrow!
Avatar 7/16 4:29pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Yes, all that. Again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm listener james from westwood:

Weird time warp of a playlist chat here!
Avatar 5:03pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Yup time for a new game.
Avatar 5:05pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

FYI the non-live "MP3 -192k" link sounds a lot better than the real-time "MP3 stream" link.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm Rich in Washington:

I hope I am here now.
Avatar 5:06pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Rich, tell your future self something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm Rich in Washington:

Future me... I'm sorry. I didn't know what I was doing, but I did my best with what I knew.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm Rich in Washington:

Now that Jerry's gone, will we ever get to see The Day The Clown Cried?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm Rich in Washington:

Jerry's seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Avatar 5:13pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

It takes time for people to fall in love with you, but it's inevitable.
Avatar 5:18pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

"I love to improvise, but in the context of what I know is solid. I used to jump away from what I had planned and just go totally insane. And two out of maybe four of those would work. But you just can't do that today." -JL
Avatar 5:18pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

It's tempting to front-date these comments so they inter-thread within our live comments. Next time.
Avatar 5:24pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Ike was mad about the ice cream truck music, above
Avatar 5:28pm northguineahills:

Painting the office is so meditative and stress free compared to working on a semi-annual report w/ last minute changes. I should change my vocation.
Avatar 5:29pm northguineahills:

"bring your fish out" Hey, I'm not that type of man! (ok, maybe I am).
Avatar 5:29pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

ngh, that's what you say every time
Avatar 5:33pm Showshift Mary Wing:

Cool, NGH, what color are you painting the office? Deep red, maybe?
Avatar 5:34pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

So many layered shows of layered shows. A great one for half-naps.
Avatar 5:39pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

If you're using the higher-quality audio links (wfmu.org... or wfmu.org... ), you can seek ahead to where we are now: 39 mins 30 seconds
Avatar 5:45pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@ngh Fish dances, before it's too late
Avatar 5:48pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

This longer I stay awake, nothing's making any sense
Avatar 5:51pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Wait, that's the Windows 95 startup sound (Eno?) mixed with what? Oh, another Windows 95 sound. I can almost place it.
Avatar 5:52pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Someone had loaned me their laptop because back in W95 you couldn't play multiple sounds at once, so I need multiple machines, and I used Media Player 6.4 and the built-in sounds.
Avatar 5:53pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Oh Winamp, what would I be without you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Rich in Washington:

The W95 sound brings me back to starting my workday when I worked on a PC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Rich in Washington:

I loved Winamp. It was my favorite audio player before I turned into a mac user.
Avatar 5:54pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I miss the After Dark screen savers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm Rich in Washington:

I think there is a rogue-built, unsupported Mac Winamp. I tried it a long time ago but can't remember why I didn't keep using it.
Avatar 5:55pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

There's a completely fantastic piano jazz piece that strings together Windows 95 sound effects.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Rich in Washington:

The screen savers for Winamp and even Windows Media Player were very trippy. Much more interesting than those made by Apple for iTunes.
Avatar 5:57pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Winamp visualizations, they were beyond. But so were a lot of VGA demos way back...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm Rich in Washington:

I liked some of Robert Fripp's Windows Vista startup sounds. I think the sessions are online somewhere, complete with studio chatter.
Avatar 5:58pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

(as we discussed above)
Avatar 6:03pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Nothing is true anymore
Avatar 6:07pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

What if the rule becomes that the only source material I can start with is the previous 600 shows? 'Cause this seems to work really well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm Rich in Washington:

That windows sound keeps waking me up, even though I am awake. It's like when you hear YOUR alarm clock sound on TV or the radio.
Avatar 6:23pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I used my alarm clock sound as the room entry music for a dance I hosted
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm Rich in Washington:

I'm listening on an all new sound setup today. New monitor speakers and a really bassy shelftop stereo system as its subwoofer across the room. It sounds really spacey.
Avatar 6:24pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

(The 192k link I hope!) Float
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm Rich in Washington:

My alarm clock is really old and it's got the sound which is also some kind of stock sound effect, so I would often hear it on TV, etc. The effect is really jarring on me, even now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm Rich in Washington:

No! I SHOULD switch to the mp3 link, shouldn't I?
Avatar 6:26pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I mean one of the archive links ("mp3 192k" and "pop-up player") vs the live links which are relatively crummy
Avatar 6:27pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

fyi the "192 mp3" archive is 256k
Avatar 6:27pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

We're up to 1:28:00 now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Rich in Washington:

I just switched to the 'Download full MP3 link'.
Avatar 6:28pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

That one is good too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm Rich in Washington:

It sounds great.
Avatar 6:29pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

More fish songs for ngh
Avatar 6:36pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

This show is my new favorite, perhaps minus the one phone call
Avatar 6:37pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Oh and I'll see how I feel about the Nickelback section this time.
Avatar 6:38pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

(see spirited opinions, way above)
Avatar 6:40pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Yeah I agree with myself from last year, the Nickelback was more fun the time before when I pitch shifted it and brought in Shania Twain (all Mutt Lange)
Avatar 6:42pm northguineahills:

My move got busted unfortunately...
Avatar 6:43pm Timeshift northguineahills:

The Saint-Saëns they play at the France movie at Epcot (well, at least in the 80s).
Avatar 6:43pm Timeshift Rich in Washington:

This is lovely, Kenzo.
Avatar 6:44pm Timeshift listener james from westwood:

Hypnotic blend. Watts is coming in like a spell.
Avatar 6:44pm Timeshift Kenzo:

Oh I like playing with volume sliders
Avatar 6:44pm Timeshift fred:

The Nickelback was a little too dominant. I know it's a first, but it could have used something else layered in
Avatar 6:45pm Timeshift Rand al'Thor:

I like the piano track in the backing right now. It's a nice mix with everything else.
Avatar 6:45pm Timeshift Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Does anyone else find these sounds pleasing? It seems crazy that anyone would. Except I really do.
Avatar 6:45pm Timeshift Santos L. Halper:

Crazy pleasing. Except maybe the nickleback
Avatar 6:46pm Timeshift listener james from westwood:

Weird time warp of a playlist chat here!
Avatar 6:48pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Yes, all that. Again.
Avatar 6:49pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Ooh time to adjust that URL target
Avatar 6:52pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I can't fathom the obsessiveness
Avatar 6:54pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I wish you all well, and may you be less obsessive or totally
Avatar 6:57pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Hear it now again over again anytime love to all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Rich in Washington:

thanks, Kenzo! Hope to be able to listen for real on Tuesday. Seems daunting with my current work load.
Avatar 6:58pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I'm not on Tuesdays anymore. Mondays 2-4pm ET on WTJU! And here, Wednesdays 5-7pm ET on WFMU's GTDR.
