A lot of my recent shows have been pretty heavily weighted towards '80s post-punk & experimental stuff. Today's show will head off in a different direction, just for a change of pace.

Just back from 1st trip to England -where the weather is cooler thankfully.

Hello! I'm not sure I understood that political rekkid at the top. Was that about RFK looking for VPs? If so, that's kind of got a sad tinge now in hindsight.
Avatar 12:19pm

Hey, Ike! Nope, the search was for a vocalist for their cover of 96 Tears -- don't think there was a hidden metaphor there. 'Course, maybe I missed it.

What's an h between friends. Cockneys lose their h's all the time.
  12:51pm
Dean:

I'm reminded of a joke(?) told by one of the members of Dawn (as in Tony Orlando &). Her name was Telma. Either TO himself or a host of TV show on which the group was appearing asked why her name wasn't the more ordinary Thelma. The reply was something along the lines of, "My mom always told me to get the H out of here." It was followed by a laugh track.
Avatar 12:53pm
Tony Coulter:

Ha, ha, ha! Or should I say, a, a, a!

'eya, Dean!
  12:57pm

Ever notice that the titles of their hits "Tie a Yellow Ribbon 'round the Old Oak Tree" and "Knock Tree Times" don't include an H, hmmm? Very Georges Perec!

Gotta run, thanks Tony; back soon I hope..

Have you heard o Christian Bok? His book Eunoia uses only one vowel in each of its chapters, and it's better than it sounds
Avatar 1:07pm

I haven't, no. Sounds intriguing.
Avatar 1:07pm
Tony Coulter:

I take it you've decided to do without the letter f.
Avatar 1:08pm

This Opium Vala track is, believe it or not, a cover of a Simon & Garfunkel tune.

Indeed - the guitar riff is a classic!

Webhamster! Greetings!
  1:13pm
Dean:

"only one vowel in each of its chapters"

I assume this means there are multiple occurrences in each chapter of the respective vowel? Not just a single vowel in a sea of consonants?
  1:16pm
Dean:

Label BFD...Berkeley Fire Dep't?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm
fred:

@Dean: Yeah, endless uses of each vowel. It's not in German. Apparently, his real name was Christian Book, but he had it legally changed because of obvious search engine issues
  1:19pm
Dean:

"obvious search engine issues"

Now that's putting the cart before the horse!

"To take arms against a sea of consonants." Sounds Eastern European to me.

For some reason, I always confuse Christian Bök with Jaap Blonk
Avatar 1:27pm
βrian:

Get 'em, Gillum!
  1:27pm
Dean:

My daughter's first day of second grade was yesterday. I urged her always to speak with her tongue stuck out. Since it was her first day, the teacher wouldn't know the difference. But now I think it would have been better to urge her to talk like Jaap Blonk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm
fred:

@Rich: I haven't seen Jaap Blonk in years. That's not right
Avatar 1:30pm
Tony Coulter:

Has anybody seen "20th Century Oz," the movie the song on now is from? If so, is it worth tracking down?
  1:30pm
Dean:

Missed him when he was in the area earlier this year. Dammit.
Avatar 1:31pm
Tony Coulter:

Oddly, I found a Jaap Blonk tape at a Portland yard sale last year. He has performed in Portland a few times, so....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm

I just looked up that Christian Bök Portland appearance and it was over a year ago. I remember not going like it was yesterday.
I have become such a hermit.

Jaap, I Blonked it again, d'oh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm

Speaking of Australian movies, I really want to see the Oz faux doc Wrong Side of the Road again. I remember it playing on Night Flight in the mid 80s.
  1:38pm
Dean:

Going to hear The Vibrators at a local bar in early September. Lucero in SF in November. Caught Zeke twice this year. That's about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm
Rich in Washington:

The last show I saw, which was a bit of a fluke, as a friend had a spare ticket, was The Melvins last month.
Avatar 1:41pm
Tony Coulter:

I'd like to see the Australian biker film "Stone," based on its great soundtrack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm
Rich in Washington:

I am much less prone to go see shows during the winter months. But also, at my age, going out, having to sit out one or two acts I don't care about in order to see the headliner, who doesn't take the stage until 10pm, is sort of daunting for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm
Rich in Washington:

I too have yet to see Stone. I think it's on one of the streaming channels I subscribe to. I probably should. I've had the soundtrack for years and also love it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm
fred:

I've seen one show in the past two months (Follakzoid). That's alarming. I haven't seen 50 gigs this year. Even adding dance shows (I'm a contemporary dance fan) I don't think I'll get to 100 this year. I'm getting old
  1:43pm
Dean:

I didn't go to the show, but because the venue is practically in my backyard I heard Israel Vibration's recent show loudly and clearly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm
Rich in Washington:

Wrong Side of the Road was pretty cool. It followed two Aboriginal rock bands on the road, their run-ins with the police, racist white Aussies, etc.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm
Rich in Washington:

The goldilocks zone for me to see a show has to be: early, with less than two opening acts; cheap or free; not on a 'school' night. Oh, and preferably in my backyard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm
fred:

@Rich: I'm with you on the "cheap" side. I might shell out $30 for a show, but not every year. (Dance is another story, but even there I rarely go that high)

They might have been situated at Whittier College for a while, hence the jacket's reference to "the Penn Street neighborhood."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm

I sort of got over my 'guilt' or whatever about not going to shows by admitting to myself that I'm not really a live music person.
And that's OK. That's alright. I'm good enough, and I'm strong enough and - doggone it - people like me!
