How do, Doug and other ecstatics! Opened my listening day at 2:30 am (!!) to chase a noon deadline via the accompaniment of archives from Liz Berg and Bethany Ryker, two amazing women whose shows I do miss.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07am Doug Schulkind:

I miss those great people/DJs, too, Listener James! On a related note, I have noticed that the new/upcoming WFMU schedule appears to have more women on it than ever before. #thrilling #stillmoreworktodo
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:18am listener james from westwood:

Good news indeed! I am among those who count vs. the previous schedule. Hoping Zoe is able to do some fill-ins during her down time, but glad to see Therese, Amanda's new cohosting gig, and new-to-me Adrienne!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:21am listener james from westwood:

Quite surprised to see Ken taking a knee for a season, but yay for the Long Rally—primo show in general, and especially to have on while copyediting/proofreading!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24am Doug Schulkind:

@LJFW
Do you find instrumental music more compatible with editing? I always did.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:30am listener james from westwood:

You know, I work for an editing service, and one of the staffers there asked the freelancers just this week what we listen to while doing editorial work. Wide, wide range of answers. In my case, I mentioned FMU in particular, and cited shows playing instrumental or not heavily lyrical music, but that I can also work with lyric-accompanied music, as long as it's not too jarring vs. the work or too familiar (like 5 or 6 classic-rock tunes in a row would be bad; I just follow along too closely; one "WFMU hit," no prob).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:32am listener james from westwood:

For super-intensive editing, playlists like Bryce's, Scott McD's, Noise & Syrup, A440/Stochastic, a lot of Kurt's, Pounding System, Lamin, and the like are my go-tos.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:32am listener james from westwood:

And, surprisingly perhaps, Solid Gold Hell. Grindy but constant metal is weirdly simpatico.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33am Doug Schulkind:

Whatever works! Your clients are lucky folk, James.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:35am listener james from westwood:

Thanks! And I am super-lucky to have them! WFMU, both on air and on stream/archive, helps make their copy clean clean clean!

The old "intro to the Steinski rebroadcast" in-theme, if I'm not mistaken?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01am Doug Schulkind:

By Yehova, you're right, Listener James. You DO pay attention!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:03am listener james from westwood:

You certainly are not mis-remembering. Lincoln ADORED riding that wonderful twp-seat indoor merry-go-round contraption at the fair every year.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Goyim in the AM:

Hey Doug! You won the coin flip against the Long Rally today. Truly the cruelest juxtaposition in WFMU multi-stream history -- but at least I now have a dependable archive choice for That One Terrible DJ Who Has A Show During My Prime Listening Time (no guessing, I love all FMU djs, even the tiny handful of bad ones.).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am melinda:

morning folks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Goyim in the AM:

I've been real happy with the breadth and depth of some the new WFMU young 'uns. There are some on-mic styles that drive me crazy (bear in mind I left the US 20 years ago last week -- I accept that the language done changed), but FMU remains the station that plays the good stuff.

Howdy, Lewis!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am melinda:

I just checked out the new schedule and holy crap, no Bob Brainen on Saturday morning! That was my gateway show to FMU. I did love Amanda's new show when it filled-in a while back, though, and was hoping it would return.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Doug Schulkind:

Amanda will be co-hosting a new young-persons' program.! Can't wait to hear it.
  9:50am still b/p:

Just a little bit here, but with some numbers you get clarinet and a few other instruments into the arrangement and have a cumbia-klezmer swirl.
  9:50am sinner:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am melinda:

@Doug it was a fill-in for Gaylord, I think, and a big hit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am coelacanth∅:

i think it odd that at least the top 5 links on a google search for Mike Cooper are about THIS Mike Cooper, yet wikipedia has only Mike Coopers (& Michael Coopers) that are NOT this Mike Cooper.

ha! Thanks Doug.
...and, i can only imagine how it feels to drop your child off at college. gotta be rough. but what an accomplishment too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Doug Schulkind:

@coelacanth∅
The dropping off was OK. The arriving home was a mess. We have three cats. One of them has been attached at the hip to our daughter. A constant companion. That cat is stomping around the house moaning and bereft. It is heartbreaking.
  10:58am Dean:

I once attended an Indian music and dance festival in Long Beach, CA. It took place in a large community auditorium, and a majority of the attendees were, not surprisingly, Indian. The women wore saris. I wore my customary t-shirt and jeans. One of the Indian women in a sari seated near me turned to me and said, "You're the only comfortably dressed person here." I thought that was funny, but I was also kinda surprised, because I'd always figured saris were comfortable.

Lakshmi Shankar performed during the festival.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Doug Schulkind:

Was any of them wearing a Dead Kennedys sari?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Jeff Golick:

They've lined up Aretha's 130 pink Cadillacs across five lanes of a Detroit highway.
  11:02am Dean:

No, but my t-shirt bore a quote from Erich Segal, "Love means never having to wear your sari." Which brings us full circle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Doug Schulkind:

God is good, Jeff Golick.

  11:18am Listener Gregory:

I made it to the Velvet Lounge twice. Fred Anderson is the only major musical figure who has called a taxi for me—twice, when it didn't come in a reasonable time.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am coelacanth∅:

haha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Uncle Michael:

Did Charles make the same joke? I just now came up with it all by my ownself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am coelacanth∅:

(* = not MY president )
  11:35am Dean:

The asterisk part. He routinely refers to "the president*" and "the administration*". The ribbon cutting is all yours, but certainly in a Piercian vein.

There was a tribute concert to Aretha Franklin in Detroit last night - on TV starting after midnight European time. Rather late, so I recorded the entire thing. Any one watching on the other side of the pond?

i have an album, but i don't recall which, that has an asterisk after each song title, with no reference to it anywhere. i thought it pretty funny, and obediently wasted a few minutes looking for an explanation.
