Hey, Jeff. Here from the beginning, if listening from the shower counts.

C'mon in, @Andrew Waterloo! @Scraps! @Listener Gregory! Oh, it counts.

I wanted to listen from the first minute, and I wish I did. Does the count?

I like to hear the show in a state of bodily and mental purity.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am

Yes, well, @Gary. I can't really comment on timeliness. Not my bailiwick. I fear crowds this year; it's becoming quite a thing.
  9:44am
Doug Schulkind:

Remember the old (and possibly still extent) New York Is Book Country publishing street fair in Manhattan? I once appeared at it wearing a skin-tight faux Superman costume with a large “F” on the front. I was representing the publisher I worked for, Facts On File.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am
Brian in UK:

Is the BBF selling old, new, rare?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am
Jeff Golick:

@Doug: I remember! That's hysterical. I'm looking at three NYIBC posters that are awaiting hanging here, '86, '88, and the never-happened '01.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am
fred:

@Doug: I hope you were well compensated for that stunt. You know that pics are bound to come up at some point (though maybe you didn't know then)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am
Brian in UK:

Doug, have you still got the 'outfit'? Could enhance your djing, not that it is not already super, man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am
Jeff Golick:

@Brian: it's mostly new...with a growing list of events/speakers/"conversations". hyperallergic.com... (for some reason, the festival site itself isn't loading for me)
  9:50am
Doug Schulkind:

The outfit was rented (I affixed then removed the big felt “F” before returning it). I do, however, have photographic evidence of the affair. Probably my single most mockable historical artifact according to my daughter.
  9:52am
Doug Schulkind:

Now I have to get back to my current mockable employment situation.

I listened to the Amarcord Nina Rota album so much when it came out that this is now what I think the Rota originals sounded like. Who knew he wrote for Bill Frisell and Steve Lacy?

Yeah, one's sense of who made what can be warped by those first encounters, @LG

@Gary: ha.

Jeff, here it is a race to get the tomatoes, garlic, onions, basil ,and flat leaf parsley from the garden transformed into rough sauce and stored, for as we know, winter is coming.

@Gary: There's a row of apartment buildings not too far from where I live called "résidence des crocheteurs", which would translate as something like "lockpicker estates"

Is Lost in the Stars another Hal Willner production?

Lou Reed does "September Song" on this record.
  10:35am

"96 T-Shirts" almost sounds like a song title.
  10:37am
Dean:

"Honkey Donkey" is a song on Isotope's first album, 1974.
  10:39am
Dean:

(Come to think of it, @Jeff G., you should slip some Isotope into the playlist now and then. Fusion-y, but enduring stuff.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am
Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @Dean. I only have one Isotope album, Illusion. I'll give it a spin.
  10:44am
Listener Gregory:

I have to say that I enjoy the older Carla Bley work more than her recent small-group albums, which are perhaps too subtle for me. These cuts are all really good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am
Jeff Golick:

She's a tremendous arranger, is one thing that becomes clear.

Escalator Over the Hill was reviewed in Rolling Stone in August '72. Bob Palmer closes the review by noting that it is available for $12 at Jazz Composer's Orchestra, 1841 Broadway, which is the Columbus Circle Building.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am
Jeff Golick:

Some greats on this JCO number that are still with us: Milford Graves, Archie Shepp, Steve Swallow...and of course Bley.
  10:59am
Dean:

On my first day working in a record store in '78 I was tasked with replacing the price tags on most of the records. I can't remember whether the prices rose a dollar from $2.99 or $3.99, but I think the latter. These were discounts on MSRP. So, yeah, $12 for a 3xLP was not exorbitant.

Yep. I even went there (on Broadway) to shop. Was devastated when they went broke.

Damn, it just dawned on me that I'll have to skip this show for almost a month. At least I have a good excuse for one Sunday: Ulzhan Baibussynova is playing in Paris

No excuses necessary, @fred, but we'll miss you.

I think “Ida Lupino” is Bley’s most-covered song. At least, I have it in several version by several musicians
Avatar 11:18am
Scraps:

And here it is!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am
Jeff Golick:

Yes, agreed, @Scraps. I even started considering a marathon premium of only "Ida Lupino" -- the cover designs itself -- but I don't think I could do it.
  11:20am
Listener Gregory:

My id is saying to stay here with the music, but my superego is telling me to get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather. Because it's Sunday, I have to listen to my superego. I'll catch up later. Thanks, Jeff.

P.S. Please imagine that I have put on an appropriate amount of sunscreen for which the phrase "clown makeup" never comes to mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am

Thanks for being here, @LG, and never enough sunscreen (is my motto)! Enjoy the sunshine!
  11:21am
rw:

Enjoy the sunscreen, I mean sunshine LG!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am
fred:

@Jeff: not sure about that single song concept. Looks hard to pull off and choosing how to order the covers must be hell
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am
Jeff Golick:

Agreed, @fred. I mostly just want to put Ida Lupino on the cover of the CD. Did Scott M. do a "Lonely Woman" premium CD, or was that just a Long Rally show?
  11:33am
rw:

Maybe it could be called Ida Lupino and Other Delights. Though now that I type it out it sounds a little creepy.

I didn't realize how much I like Carla Bley. I'm going to have to start back at the beginning of this show and get the parts I missed.
Avatar 11:37am

I so, so love Carla Bley. This is great!

Of course, I have my faux-radio show three hours of Carla Bley, way way back.

Khris Davis is leading the American League in home runs right now. And like, Ms. Bley, he is from Oakland.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am

Ida, Know.

Listening intently in the kitchen, where the aroma of acorn squash baking is battling the fragrant mounds of fresh basil leaves for olafactory dominance. Intense, a cage match, one fall to a finish.
Lovin' the show this morning, Jeff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am
fred:

@Jeff: If that was a premium, I don't have it. So probably a show (don't make me count these CDs, man, I've already shamed myself enough)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am
Jeff Golick:

Not to be confused with Kris Davis, on now. Not sure what her OPS is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am

So glad to hear it, @Sem.

@fred: Ha. It was a show, from 2012: wfmu.org...

Thanks to you wonderful people, @fred, @ljfw, @Sem, @rw, @Granny Spicy Tuna! And all others reading, not named. Take care.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm
Jeff Golick:

I totally mangled that Mary Halvorson announcement. 1. Kneebody is not her group (I was thinking of Thumbscrew). 2. She's not on the 16th (today), but, as @fred notes, tomorrow, the 17th. 3. She's performing with Frisell in a duo, and with Robbie Lee, also in a duo, in celebration of her two records with each of them.
