Oh good god.. The Éthiopiques series is up to 30 volumes. The completist in me gives up. I've only ever gotten the first five.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm

Rich, I hear you - they put out so much great stuff.

As a kid, Ouagadougou was my favorite city to say out loud (yes, I was weird, even back then).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm
David D:

NGH: It is a capital name!
Avatar 🚂 4:31pm
Carmichael:

At first glance, I thought this song was by GWAR.
Avatar 4:32pm
northguineahills:

Yep! At age 5, I memorized all of the state capitals, at age 7, all of the world capitals, age 13, I drew all of the world flags, and my parents put them all over the kitchen. It was a bit visually noisy. Now, my best recent achievement is listening to WFMU
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm

Carmichael: Yes, they had a sort of phase...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm

@Rich: Until last week, I lost track at 22, then Scott played something from 30, and like you, I went, "i want to, but I just can't".

Friends, this is where I have to get off. I've got a horribly early rise to catch a plane to Toulouse.Loving the show and will dive the archive later.
A la prochaine.

Toulouse@! have a good trip.
Avatar 5:05pm
northguineahills:

The borders of Gambia were given to the British as the French controlled Senegal. The borders in the treaty were written that the British can have any land from the banks of the Gambia River, the distance a cannon could be fired in 1856.
Avatar 5:06pm
northguineahills:

oh, the horror, Stanley, not Toulouse (jelly)!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:08pm

It's so weird to think how the Western -powers- expected to just chew up the world.

Jeese, I just have work road trip to my company's HQ on the Space Coast Friday, and then meeting the sibling and parents for an american football game in Jacksonville on Saturday. (would prefer Toulouse).

David D:

Thanks, Stanley and bon voyage!
Avatar 5:14pm
northguineahills:

Most of the world's (but not all) weird border problems can be traced to Euro-colonialism. My favorite border ares are Belgium/Netherlands (they were drunk when they came up w/ that, there are minuscule exclaves everywhere, India and Bangledesh (meta-enclaves), and Armernia and Azerbaijan (more meta-enclaves, but w/ bloodier results). The last example came from the chaos of the disintegration of the Russian and Ottoman Empires at the end of WWI/
Avatar 5:15pm
northguineahills:

Can't go wrong w/ Beninese funk.....
Avatar 5:18pm
northguineahills:

or, other crappy borders, from the lack of European colonial powers planning for the their territories independence.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:21pm
Michael 98145:

i'm sure they never really intended to end their -civilizing- influence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm
David D:

Yes, many of the current borders date back to the 1885 Berlin Conference, a lot of it completely arbitrary.
Avatar 5:26pm
northguineahills:

Yep, the The Berlin Conference (1885, Africa) and the Sykes-Picot Agreement (1916, Middle East) accounts for a good portion of civil strife on this planet to this day.
  5:26pm
Tamar:

A combination of arbitrary and deliberative. Divide and conquer-- works for the conquerers, in the short term, at least. Hi David, great show! Too bad I can't keep listening on my commute home.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm
David D:

Tamar - yes, very much so. And the mess continues on.

Avatar 5:57pm

If you want to see a depressing movie, I suggest Lumumba. It details how the US/British?Belgians/South Africans/Soviets messed around w/ Congo-Kinshasa and how the CIA gave the South Africans, tacit approval to assassinate Lumumba (his nickname) in 1965, the first democratically elected president of Congo-Kinshasa. That allow Mobuto Sese Seko to gain office which he held until being overthrown in 1997... en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm

NGH: Yes that sounds interesting and quite possibly depressing.
