Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from March 15, 2019 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Hey Unc, you've been a FMU frequent flyer this week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm

@Lane Gray treat him well. He is a pleasure to have in the home, but be warned do not leave him in the kitchen alone or man will you have an amazing amount of meals to consume.

Listener Robert:

Also shedding the FMA must be helping the bottom line. The great thing about it was that Auricle got the FMA going for several years, and has now found commercial sponsorship of it, so it's continuing just as it was but without costing Auricle anything. And its sponsorship by an A-V equipment rental outfit is so unobtrusive, you have to go out of your way to find it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm
Lane Gray:

Regarding the third hour's Bert Jansch: am I the only one who keeps getting the names confused with Bert Lantz, even though they have different music?
  12:32pm
Listener Robert:

In fact I was using the FMA just last night.

I'm not positive but I'm pretty sure FMA was run financially independent of FMU.

Interesting story, UM. Radio went dead for me too for several years after I lost interest in top 40.
  1:38pm
Dean:

Beware! LA's KPFK, too, is sponsored by the listeners, and yet when during the '90s the GM was an insufferable NPR-wannabe bean-counter, the station quality tanked precipitously. They dropped the Pan African shows, they tightened the belt on the opera show until there was no time left to air even a waft of opera, and so it disappeared. WFMU succeeds, sure, because of the listeners, but the proximate cause, to my ear, is the DJs, staff/volunteers, and SMK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm
Michael 98145:

well-said, @Dean

I heard that Ike Turner & co got fuzz guitar on Rocket 88 because the amp speaker got a hole in it when it was strapped to the top of the car on the way to the recording studio.
  2:45pm
Dean:

I think a more important issue than trying to get a range of opinions from across the political spectrum (which is ever so slightly question begging) is trying to understand why we take for granted the nature and extent, never mind the mere existence at all, of a political spectrum.
  2:46pm

What Mark just said -- it's not left versus right, etc. -- exactly illustrates my point.

Cairo, Illinois is pronounced like the syrup!

Thanks for the prize -- I loved the Detroit Emeralds tracks you played.

I don't just tell my friends (few though they are) to listen to your show (and WFMU in general); I play my favorite shows on the kitchen stereo with a Kindle and the FMU app.
