Hey Northguineahills!
Here's about this piece: Aral field recordings is part of an ongoing research on radio frequencies in remote areas, this radio frequencies were captured in Moynak, a city once the biggest port in the Aral sea, today a desert, a ghost town inhabited by the remain population mostly old people that try to survive one of man made worst disasters.

cassette 1 is a selection of this radio frequencies recorded and edited by carlos casas, the sounds were captured from a small radio receiver from FM-AM-SW_VLF

To put it succinctly, The Aral Sea disaster happened b/c the Soviet Union decided to irrigate the hell out of the Aral Sea for the cash crop of cotton. After 30 years, the inland sea was 10% of it's original size, and former fishing towns were 30-50km from the existing water. Where the former seabed existing, all of the Soviet pollutants and sea salt got blown all over the place making a toxic environment for everyone. Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan have started w/ the UN to rechannel the tributaries to the sea, and some minor recoveries has occurred.

my last apartment the 'fridge had no handle (i made one out of very heavy duty appliance cable) and had a constant puddle in front of it, and to close it all the way we had to lightly kick the bottom corner because the door was warped.
and in the middle of the night, not long after moving in, i swore i heard the low murmur of several people speaking quietly, indistinctly somewhere; but some in the dark exploring led me to the refrigerator.

But, in happier terms, a juvenile male finch each morning gets into my back porch through a small hole, and dances a mating dance leaving acorns and seeds near the entrance. I can never get a good pic, as the lighting is always bad. I wouldn't mind if it weren't for the guano....
