	12:36pm Rich in Washington: Hello. My wife found some Merlot infused pasta at a closeout bin in one of those boojie Trader Joe's type stores and I made it the other night with some marinara sauce. They were strangely pink but tasted nothing like merlot, thankfully.

	12:49pm Dean: That TJ's is my day-to-day butter, well, it and its salted counterpart. It isn't at all like what the article describes. It's good, but not wonderfully buttery.

	1:20pm coelacanth∅: Jeff (@12.53) yes it's a 1/2lb hunk. the packaging is fragile too, so it's kind of a pain but it's delicious and i don't use much butter so i figure i can afford it. it's significantly less expensive at tjs too.
	1:20pm sphere: I used to get dried peaches from TJ. It was why I drove to the outer burbs. Unfortunately. they vanished. I definitely miss them.

	1:26pm still b/p: When I bitched (again) in a casually frustrated way to a staffer at TJ about the frequent disappearances, he tried to put it in terms of many different suppliers and a constant drive to find good things and keep them affordable. But it's still a wwwwacky business model -- significant and persistent unreliability. But I'm still walking in the doors with so many others, so...wacky or not, it works, and change ain't likely comin'.
	1:27pm coelacanth∅: Rich (@1.04) yeah there's a despicable aspect to trader joe's business model. they offer better-than-average prices, in general, but they'll only set up shop in wealthy communities.

	1:30pm Rev. Turnip Druid: We recently got one (T.Joes) in DC, in an absurdly over-gentrified neighborhood where apartments easily exceed $3K/month. The affluent youngsters flock to it daily like a plague of gilded sparrows clutching their wine & quinoa. Quite amusing.

	1:33pm Johnzon: that's what aldis is for. whatever keeps two german millionaire brothers from squabbling. family first, I think the aldi/trader joes/europe/america thing is a clever way to avoid fratricide also been covered extensively in previous comments sections. No radio station's audience is better informed about the history & business practices of Aldis & Trader Joes than wfmu for some reason. just keeps coming up.
	1:35pm βrian: Our local coöp has extremely large margins, and it accumulates cash so quickly it needs to spin off a brand new store every few years. To my mind, they're kind of missing the point.

	1:35pm Krys O.: I've been shopping at Aldi. I'm stunned at how low the prices are. The food is not terrible. They might not have everything, but they come quite close for me.

	1:38pm coelacanth∅: i shop at trader joe's mainly because it's the closest store to where i stay when i'm working in ct. now i've grown fond of certain things that i only find there, or only find there at a price i can pay. i still shop at the local shoprite and "health food" store where i live.

	1:40pm coelacanth∅: ...for one thing trader joe's produce (which is the majority of my diet) is pretty crappy. tends to rot within a few days. there are exceptions. and they don't sell any good rice, which is also a main part of my diet.
	1:41pm Z-pulpa: cooking much has seemed impossible this week, thus only eating noodles... sometimes I get so tired...

	1:52pm still b/p: Yeah, the TJ produce does go bad too quickly too often! Cautious about it. Asked about and emphasized it was a thing, and staff reacted as if never heard such complaints and had nothing to say when I asked if they bought second-quality, older produce to get deals. There's one of our chants when the protests start: "What good is cheap if the fruit don't keep?!" And, "Trader Joe, taste my tears! All the good stuff disappears!"
	1:54pm βrian: And those sadistic checkout counters!
	1:54pm Dean: I suspect TJ's sources produce more or less locally, because I've not had a problem with it, at least no more than at my go-to market, Berkeley Bowl West. One day I'll pay $0.69 there for a pound of strawberries (really) that last a good while, another day a $2.00 basket will turn in a couple days. I'm at peace with the disappearing stuff (except, maybe, the 12 oz. tins of Bay Blend coffee beans), because I understand that they're dealing with sometimes ad hoc supply circumstances to keep their prices (relatively) low.

	2:00pm chresti: Farmers markets are the best place for fresh produce that keeps a long time.
	2:00pm coelacanth∅: the tjs on the east coast get most (or all?) of their produce from their warehouses on the west coast. at least less than a year ago that's what i was told -when there was that lettuce scare. their lettuce was free of the bacteria or whatever it was because they knew exactly where it was coming from. (not arizona, where the problem was)

Now it is actually Thursday, so it feels like I've had three consecutive thursdays this week. Thanks to yesterday's problem, seems like today should be Friday. This would be fine since tomorrow would be Saturday, but I would need to work that "saturday" since it's technically Friday (death to consensus reality)...

	2:10pm coelacanth∅: my week is off too, because i worked through the weekend, till monday night. i awoke early tuesday morning really stoked to hear Grachan Moncur III -the opening to Scott McDowell's show that i haven't heard in a long long time. i got to hear the Clay> Matt transitional banter, which i'd never heard before. (which was pretty damn funny!) -then i managed to sleep late yesterday and miss Grachan Moncur III...again.
	2:10pm TDK60: Nunzio was a kind fellow, taught music lessons (clarinet, violin, etc.) in a glass booth in the back. But he would smilingly interrupt lessons to come sell me an LP or 45: Meet the Beatles, Bringing It All Back Home, Peter, Paul & Mary. But I digress..

	2:15pm coelacanth∅: i was very excited when a record store opened up in my town when i was maybe 9-10 years old. the owner was not very friendly though and i never trusted him. and his prices where higher than the 2-guys record department. but that was way too far to go to by myself.
	2:18pm Carmichael: Tower Records was born in my hometown, so we kewl kids hung out there all the time. All Things Must Pass ...
	2:19pm sphere: the strip mall right next to where i grew up had a record store that was part of those small chains that used to be around. i remember hearing a David Sylvian album on the local weird music station and dashing out to get it.
	2:20pm Z-pulpa: The True Vine record store in Baltimore just moved to a bigger location, I have been meaning to go check it out and snoop for some weird mix tapes.

In 1967 I was at The Alpha Beta supermarket with my mom, and in their "record department" next to the potato chips, I found a copy of the first Grateful Dead album. I had seen their name on posters in San Francisco, but I had not yet heard them. To this day, it is one of my favorite Dead records.

	2:45pm still b/p: Wasn't aware of Tower until it was YUUUGE, so it always had that oversized, impersonal chain flavor, as opposed to the hip musically enthusiastic groove and just happy browsy bounty of the earlier years.

	12:36pm Rich in Washington: Hello. My wife found some Merlot infused pasta at a closeout bin in one of those boojie Trader Joe's type stores and I made it the other night with some marinara sauce. They were strangely pink but tasted nothing like merlot, thankfully.

But it's still a wwwwacky business model -- significant and persistent unreliability. But I'm still walking in the doors with so many others, so...wacky or not, it works, and change ain't likely comin'.

No radio station's audience is better informed about the history & business practices of Aldis & Trader Joes than wfmu for some reason. just keeps coming up.

	1:52pm still b/p: Yeah, the TJ produce does go bad too quickly too often! Cautious about it. Asked about and emphasized it was a thing, and staff reacted as if never heard such complaints and had nothing to say when I asked if they bought second-quality, older produce to get deals. There's one of our chants when the protests start: "What good is cheap if the fruit don't keep?!" And, "Trader Joe, taste my tears! All the good stuff disappears!"

	1:54pm Dean: I suspect TJ's sources produce more or less locally, because I've not had a problem with it, at least no more than at my go-to market, Berkeley Bowl West. One day I'll pay $0.69 there for a pound of strawberries (really) that last a good while, another day a $2.00 basket will turn in a couple days. I'm at peace with the disappearing stuff (except, maybe, the 12 oz. tins of Bay Blend coffee beans), because I understand that they're dealing with sometimes ad hoc supply circumstances to keep their prices (relatively) low.

	2:00pm coelacanth∅: the tjs on the east coast get most (or all?) of their produce from their warehouses on the west coast. at least less than a year ago that's what i was told -when there was that lettuce scare. their lettuce was free of the bacteria or whatever it was because they knew exactly where it was coming from. (not arizona, where the problem was)

(which was pretty damn funny!) -then i managed to sleep late yesterday and miss Grachan Moncur III...again.
	2:10pm TDK60: Nunzio was a kind fellow, taught music lessons (clarinet, violin, etc.) in a glass booth in the back. But he would smilingly interrupt lessons to come sell me an LP or 45: Meet the Beatles, Bringing It All Back Home, Peter, Paul & Mary. But I digress..

In 1967 I was at The Alpha Beta supermarket with my mom, and in their "record department" next to the potato chips, I found a copy of the first Grateful Dead album. I had seen their name on posters in San Francisco, but I had not yet heard them. To this day, it is one of my favorite Dead records.
