I hope you’re making time for a Dr John song or two tonight. See you in an hour +.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm
Little Danny:

Heya Matt! Don't know Dr. John's catalog that well, but I did just pull out a coupla Mac Rebenack instro 45s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm
Matt from New Orleans:

That’s actually preferable for me. I got to see him perform a number of those sides in 2008 at the Ponderosa Stomp. Dr Ike convinced him to play a guitar set and Lil’ Buck backed him up. He clearly had been practicing as he was solid playing the instrumentals even with the injured finger.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm
Matt from New Orleans:

He clearly was having a great time and repeatedly said that he hadn’t played any of these songs in 50 years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm
Little Danny:

Wow. Mac on guitar. That's fantastic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I’m back. Waiting for flash to turn it over to you.

Hi Danny and cool room!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm

Hey chresti. Looks like ther are technical difficulties
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm

Huh. Having a hard time connecting. Gimme one second...

Electric Man sounds good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm
Matt from New Orleans:

It does. I’m guessing this is still the stream
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I was enjoying the Persian psyche track that had been before electric man
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm

Never a dull moment here. Yet so many dumb moments. Hi all! I'm live now.

When my roommate found a copy of the Silver Apples first LP, it blew my mind! (this was two years before the reissues....)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm

Sounds Like we're Flaming now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm
Little Danny:

@chresti: All time classic, this track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm
doctorjazz:

The backup singer on the Silver Apples track needs a butt of work on his intonation...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm
Little Danny:

My mind too was blown when I first heard the Silver Apples in the late '90s. Still nothin' else like 'em
  10:13pm
Johnzon:

I feel like somebody played a really good cover of that silver apples song on here...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm
Matt from New Orleans:

My friend dragged me to see Silver Apples in college when they reformed in the mid 90s. I had no idea what I was in for but I had brought a lot of weed with me and had a good time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm
Little Danny:

Haha doc yer autocorrect
Avatar 10:14pm
northguineahills:

@Johnzon: It was Big Blood's cover of, "I have known Love">
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
Little Danny:

Hey Johnzon! Third Eye Foundation did a really great cover of it; I think I've played it before here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm

Good call, forgot about that one NGH
Avatar 📉 Swag For Life Member 10:15pm

I think the wonky intonation makes the song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm

Just noticed it (was getting out off my car).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm

Yeah, the Silver Apples vocals are charming but artless in the extreme

I'll be in and out while cleaning!

Johnzon:

LD... I don't know Dr. J's catalog that well either but I had a best of & I think my favorite song was Qualified... "your champagne aint no hipper than my sodapop"... the anti-elitist message resonates with me haha. Just found out he died... damn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm

Saw Dr John a whole bunch of times, just heard he passed. Sad...
  10:20pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm
doctorjazz:

(Can't imagine it being on a jukebox).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm
Little Danny:

Totally agree, doc. It's also the best track from the LP in my opinion. Love when that happens
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
Little Danny:

Man I know. I also have '60s-era Ornette Coleman and Albert Ayler 45s. Why???
  10:36pm
Dean:

If you can't imagine a record being on a jukebox, you haven't been to Al's Bar.
  10:36pm
Carmichael:

Heya Danny and peeps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
Matt from New Orleans:

No I haven’t been to Al’s or Phil’s or Shemp’s Dean
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
Little Danny:

Hey Carmichael! And hey Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
doctorjazz:

Would love to turn one of those 45s up one day.
  10:38pm

Can't speak for Phil's or Shemp's, but Al's, well, yes, I can. Used to do my homework there.

This week in 78 talk: Area shop had Tito Puente 'Confucious Mambo' and also Joe Loco 'Why Don't You Do Right'. Filed as giveaways for a latin 78 collectro. Both were spun as background music while browsing. Hi Danny, hi everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
doctorjazz:

Sounds Like I'd like Al's, but if a commute, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
Little Danny:

Mind you doc, I don't think that the Ayler or Coleman 45s were intended for jukebox play. On the other hand, I don't know whom they were intended for. Turned-on DJs of the '60s?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm

"Confucious Mambo" is so great! Hey Jason

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm

That DOES sound like a party
Avatar 📉 Swag For Life Member 10:43pm

Jazz 45s: I played out the Mingus 45 of 'Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting' ... and just learned of Nat Adderley 'Stony Island'. Vocal Jazz 45: Jon Hendricks 'Watermelon Man' is great.
  10:43pm
Dean:

Al's was a commute for me, and I lived then in Southern California east of Little Tokyo in LA, where it sat. It was a haven, mostly a punk haven, but the clientele represented a broader swath. The jukebox was among its strengths.
Avatar 📉 Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
JtotheK:

Danny: Do you think one could find enough 'Watermelon Man' 45s to do a solid set of nothing but?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
doctorjazz:

Actually, Ornette's Theme from a Symphony had a melody that IS the perfect follow up to It's My Party.
  10:57pm
Carmichael:

The Silver Apples are amazing. I got that song on the FMU thumb drive premium a few years back. Along with about 100 other great songs.

Was helping a friend do some final move-out of her stuff from her sold home yesterday and she had a couple people over to do clean-up, one of whom said, "I like to clean." These words are strange to me. She aded the qualifier that she's more eager about cleaning places other than her own.

The post-tamale circumstance right there as you've described it is a ready song lyric, chresti.
