Screamo Scoyl?
Avatar 4:20pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

"chaotic emo" makes sense. I always associate that vocal style with DC bands from the '87-90 era, never was hip enough to pick up on micro-genre categories, but yeh. That.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm

Avatar 4:25pm

My older brother always speaks of the days where there was no screamo, powerviolence, etc... just "punk". Different flavors of what was effectively the same thing. Would love to hear a Chaotic Emo show tho, don't think I've ever heard you play any saccharine trust or Indian summer befo
Avatar 4:26pm

@RTD - wouldn't the Nation of Ulysses fit in the "chaotic emo" category?

Avatar 4:30pm
Creamo Coyl:

NOU were one of the main inspirations.

I am a HUGE Saccharine Trust fan, and they def laid down the law. Indian Summer, not so much although they're about to have a Numero box set so get ready for nostalgia.

Indian Summer were kind of like if early Boards of Canada were a hardcore band. That's a stupid thing to write but hey I'm doing a radio show right now. Someone have me on a 90s hardcore podcast and I'll drop some chaotic science.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm
Spankyflop:

When I was young it was either punk or hardcore
Avatar 4:31pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

@sphere: I only ever saw 'em when they were known as Ulysses (no "nation of..") which may have been their earlier form. And the term probably fits.

Many of those dischord bands were a bit jokey around here, like a taco-bell menu: the same 5 or 6 ingredients / people to make a whole menu / scene. "Incestuous" was a popular term.
Avatar 4:32pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

What Coyl said, re: Saccharine T.
Avatar 4:34pm
thormagma:

Haha I see what you mean about Indian summer, they are almost like accidentally post rock at times. I usually zone out until it gets heavy again.
Avatar 4:35pm
Chris from DC:

Apologies if this has been mentioned, but Indian Summer are playing a reunion show in the near future.
Avatar 4:35pm
Creamo Coyl:

They seemed to have an obsession with child(ish) innocence and losing it and all that. I say fuck that and just go for the chaos. They ain't no Moss Icon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm
ultradamno:

Saccharine Trust were great, but divisive at the time. They went over pooly when I saw them open for Black Flag at the Jockey Club (they were unsympathetically soundmixed, in fairness) and there's a live recording of them playing in Kansas around the same time floating around online where you can here people grousing about them. Pretty funny actually.

Hee-Haw, genius.

@ RTD - I grew up in Rockville and lived in the DMV during the 90s, so I remember. I never got along with Skip. :)
Avatar 4:40pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

HEH! and alas, Skip has left the building now. I was on the Silver Spring MD side, so Vinyl Ink was my 2nd home.

Also, sheezus Creamo, this set. Top shelf.

Spent quite a lot of time at Yesterday and Today actually, having grown up in Rockville, shall we say, before the 90s. I bought more life-changing records at Vinyl Ink I would say.
Avatar 4:57pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

I've already confessed on this comment board to making a lifestyle of raiding Y&T's dumpster & decorating my illegal sublet basement with 500 copies of the Debbie Harry KooKoo poster.

Gotta have a hobby, I suppose.

From what I remember, Skip loved those 45s more than anything. I don't think he really cared what else got stocked as long as it wasn't lame.
