Facebook is asking me if I want to tag John Dalton in the photo you posted for this show, Doug. I'm sorely tempted.

When I added that photo, FB automatically tagged John Dalton and I had to remove the tag. WTF?

I generally avoid the "you sound a lot like" comparisons. Tends to diminish one or the other. Only meant as a compliment, of course!

The late Roy Campbell Jr. on that trumpet solo.
  10:56am Gina B:

Same here, Doug! And I agree that it can be a huge compliment sometimes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Doug Schulkind:

Except when it negates the talent and humanity of the person being compared, like when Karen Dalton was called the Billie Holiday of folk. The thing an artist generally wants to achieve more than anything is to sound like themselves. The comparison may be a compliment, but it represents, ultimately, a barrier that will need to be circumvented on the way to true originality.

But mostly, yeah, a compliment.
Avatar 11:02am annie:

i agree doug,
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:04am Brian in UK:

For how many years were bands being touted as the new Beatles or new Bob Dylan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Goyim in the AM:

Vocally, Karen and Billie had too entirely different vocal "problems" going on -- they sang in tune and rhythmically brilliantly in "unpretty" voices that could move you deeply. Young singers faking that with nasally vocal frying everything make me nuts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Doug Schulkind:

You're so right, Goyim in the AM. Holiday and Dalton had nothing resembling "pretty" voices. Prettiness in that context is often an artifice that derails the deliverance of an artist's unique human self. Holiday and Dalton hid behind nothing. (And it destroyed them.)
Avatar 11:14am northguineahills:

@Annie: I just got here two years ago, but job hunt has made me have to elsewhere, I friend is taking my music to store (I offered he can use them), and already took a car load of books to my parents 85km away to store, and furniture to Salvation Army.
