A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Here's one of my favorite of her poems:
HOW happy is the little stone
That rambles in the road alone,
And does n’t care about careers,
And exigencies never fears;
Whose coat of elemental brown 5
A passing universe put on;
And independent as the sun,
Associates or glows alone,
Fulfilling absolute decree
In casual simplicity.

Probably not too many of you ever listen to New Sounds on WNYC but Laurie Anderson really spoke up and helped to save it when it was threatened with cancellation recently, so she's a hero for local radio as far as I'm concerned. All these NPR news/talk stations are heavily homogenized now and it's pretty impressive that people stood up and held back the crushing tide of homogeneity trying to swallow that last daily hour on WNYC.

WBAI? Do we need WBAI anymore? You can get left-wing news anywhere on the Internet now. It served a purpose in the 80s and 90s when not everybody was on the Internet and couldn't get to The Nation or Jacobin or The Indypendent or whatever, but now? Really? Who needs this? Worse, it always sounds terrible. First radio should sound good and be entertaining.

WBAI was good since it was so wacky nothing is that wacky even WFMU hads a kind of "studied and aware wacky-ness" while WBAI was playing Avantgarde composers and bizarre music that even WFMU doesn't approach, it will be missed. A big loss, in my book. Don't own a TV or watch I just listen to the radio. There is a huge hole now ..there on the dial...

@jt, WBAI used to do music occasionally but not in recent years, right? I mean I rarely tune(d) in but when I did, it was 85-95% dismal talk that sounded terrible, and almost never any music. Just the very very occasional world music. Nothing avant-garde lately that I've ever come across. Wasn't that the 60s and 70s you're talking about?

Webhamster Henry:

WBAI has been a train wreck for years.
I used to be a big fan when I first came to New York (probably because of WFMU's lousy Manhattan signal). I used to like the music (Peter Bochan's freeform show was and still is spectacular), the "Morning Serial" which sometimes was freshly produced, "Off the Hook" the hacker's radio show, the Citizen Kafka Show and Free Music Store revival, and shows like the one I was a guest on, Oblique Stretegies.
They had the worst, most unlisteneable marathons ever. And that's saying a lot for the station that basically invented Marathons.
Check out the Bob Fass documentary for a look at WBAI, and if you can find Steve Post's "Playing in the FM Band" you can get more tales of WBAI's salad days.
