Speaking of live shows... I was on a vinyl hunt at the thrift stores this weekend. Found This Diamond Ring album from Gary Lewis and the Playboys, the Shirelles Greatest Hits, and the Bruce Springsteen Live 1975-85 box set. Opened the boxed set, saw the booklet was there (which I mistook for an inner sleeve), arrived home, removed the booklet and found... 3 cassettes. I don't have a cassette player.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm

Nothing at all has been re-recorded or overdubbed on this live album, just two or three sound FX added to help with the atmosphere.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm
coelacanth∅))):

haha, that statement contradicts itself! (nothing...except some sound effects)
but anyway yeah i just found that the synth and some of the piano parts that Kate plays were pre-recorded.
i wondered because they sound exactly like the album.
...i also wondered about the chorus - the one that sounds like "the messiah" in hello earth. i guess that was live though?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm
Franco Twinkie:

Hi Mary. I will assume that was the shows from London? As we were eating breakfast, Chresti off handedly mentioned how she wasn't familiar with Kate Bush. I tried to encapsulate her persona and art, which let to a larger conversation about been oblivious to popular taste in general. Despite the fact that we saturate ourselves with music, we are clueless, and are becoming more so everyday.
Avatar 12:58pm
Mary Wing:

Well, of course some things are pre-recorded, coealcanth! The helicopter sounds, for instance, as well as the voices in in Waking The Witch, I'd bet, since they sound like the album as well. I think the disclaimer is meant to imply that nothing was redone for the CD version except for some sound effects.

An acquaintance of mine who is even tempered and has seen more historic performances that just about anyone I know, and generally has something funny and detached to say about all of it (He was at Altamont - he's in the movie, right by the stage) flew to London to see the Kate shows. When he described them to me, he revealed a side of this personality I had never seen before - that of a totally besotted fan. I guess she does that to people?

I would say compared to the 70s, say, we live in an increasingly repressed society, due not to religious or moral pressures, but to dehumanizing effects of reducing the individual's role to that of consumer.

The Furs were doing their first US tour, playing small gigs. I saw them at The Marble Bar in Baltimore. They were using a borrowed sound system that wasn't to their liking so they stopped playing three songs in and walked off the stage and sat of the steps while they broke down the stage. Being my typical drunk, I walked up to them and said something to the effect of "What the fudge, arsehole?" Not sure why he took that personally.

She was arriving to play the student union at the University of Maryland. I had just left the record store in the basement of the union, and as I walked out to the parking garage, she was getting off the tour bus and signing some autographs. The only thing I had handy was the record I had just purchased, so I shoved it in front of her to sign. It was a Jam album. She flipped me the bird.
