Favoriting Bryce: Playlist from November 22, 2019 Favoriting

I never miscue a record. I am punctual, well-prepared, and dislike clutter. Outgoing and helpful, I'm always appropriately dressed. I do not behave erratically and have excellent penmanship. My CD's never skip, and I am in good health. I like all the notes, in any order.

That's really interesting about the Rhodesia/Zimbabwe recording. I've seen some documentaries on the Rhodesian Bush War; the Apartheid-era South African government had nothing on Ian Smith and the Rhodesian colonial ruling class when it came to brutally-enforced racial hierarchies.

Acid Mother Temple's "In C" was my gateway to Terry Riley.

hi, TDK!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm
tim from champaign (now washington):

The main record store I went to in the 90s had John Cale and Terry Riley's Church of Anthrax sitting around in the used bin for a long time. I didn't pick it up because I was dubious of Cale's post VU work and I confused Terry Riley with Terry Reid. Boy, was I out to lunch on all counts.
Avatar 1:50pm

Fuuny how this Riley is fairly old but fresh, still tickles the holes in the sides of my head.

Hello, present. My foundational Riley listening was Rainbow In Curved Air, which was pretty much a high rotation item on 'XPN back there in the mid-70s. That and Persian Surgery Dervishes.

I swapped a mess of CDs with an internet friend and ended up with a bunch of La Monte Young bootleg CDrs, then I started digging into more Non-Glass, Non-Reich minimalism

Record stores are such a big part of this, right? I mean the zoviet france was a used CD at Wazoo Records that I couldn't make heads or tales of in the store.

Avatar 2:10pm
TDK60:

Bryce, about 15 years ago I was asked to spin records at an art show. I played a side of Riley's 'Rainbow'. For such an old piece (1969) it got the most response, people coming up to ask me what it was.

Great show, as ever, Bryce!

I ALWAYS checked the "Import" bin at record stores back then. Even the dinkiest little Woolworths record stall might have something life-changing thrown in there.

Yes! I remember flipping through all of these Hafler Trio CDs wondering "what's that" in just that kind of import rack.

I attended a Deep Listening workshop Pauline Oliveras did. It was very simple to learn and had a big impact on how I can listen. I regularly combine it with John Cage's "If you don't understand it in 2 minutes, listen for 4..."
