A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Things most definitely still come in boxes. Always remember to shred your boxes before putting them outside so the fiends in the night won't know what is in the house and then steal it to buy dope.

I am reading The Moral Animal by Robert Wright (an exploration of the human mind from an evolutionary biology perspective) and Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe (about the Troubles in Northern Ireland). I also got David Heatley’s book about 12 step group addiction for Xmas, looking forward to that one.

I am always kranking on about how consciousness has an evolutionary aspect to it not considered enough. Civilization and its Discontents, and The Future of an Illusion, both by Freude, are my reference points on the subject. I'll check out this R. Wright cat. Tanks!

Fans of the Fall should read Have a Bleedin' Guess: the story of Hex Enduction Hour by Paul Hanley. It's the perfect blend of who played what, what MES is getting at in his lyrics and general feel for the band and UK post-punk in the early 80's.
  11:40am
melinda:

@SSS I think people are understandably wary of the misuse of evolutionary psychology or biology but it should be taken seriously nonetheless. Robert Wright also has a newsletter called the Nonzero Newsletter, which I follow. The book is sort of dense for my focus level (which is poor) but I’m trying to start actually reading the writings of people whose podcasts and YouTube videos I follow.

I mostly read non-fiction, but I have also been reading collections of plays.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am

Well, since you ask, currently going through:
The Goths, Lost Civilizations by David M Gwynn, Which goes from the initial encounters of the Goths with the Romans through the sacking of Rome through Gothic heritage being a regal claim in Spain through cultural revisionism as those who had been defeated by the Goths reasserted themselves and finally through Frankenstein, Bela Lugosi and up to the Cure. This seems like a lot to cover and like it would be a huge historical tome, but is a small book of less than 200 pages, including notes and bibliography, so like a cliff notes to Goths, etc.

Bangkok Wakes to Rain by Pitchaya Sudbanthad; a multi threaded fiction with characters in Bangkok: a late 19th cent. New England medical doctor missionary, a late 1960s Afro-American jazz pianist who had had some minor past success; a contemporary Thai woman who has returned after education and living in US and UK and is focusing on career not making a family; some teens doing whatever they can to hustle tourists while their mom and family try to make them be "good kids" and a couple of threads but I've only just started the book.

The Man Who Love Dogs by Leonardo Padura; historical fiction told by a Cuban focused on the assassination of Trotsky. The narrative also goes first person with Trotsky starting as he is being exiled from Russia, and with a young Spanish man recruited by his mom for a special mission.
