I think my favourite early 'werk is the Bremen Radio session (K4) from 1971. Ralf had gone off in a huff and so it was Florian with Dinger and Rother. It's so stonkingly heavy in places.

I usually have the FM radio going in the bathroom and the pop-up player on the laptop at the other end of the railroad apt. The delay varies but can be pretty severe sometimes.

Also, 91.1 has been coming in super well the past few days. Usually we can't get it at all in north Brooklyn and use 91.9. No clue why these things vary, whether it's our end, the transmitter, sunspots, whatever it might be.

I can't imagine being able to listen to FMU on my (car) radio. It's probably for the best, though, as then I would literally never stop listening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am
WoodsOfNH:

I had this show on one time on my phone upstairs while painting. It was still on downstairs on the Internet radio. I could hear the delay between the two so when there was a mic break I got to hear Matt's cackling laugh twice. Very entertaining.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am
Handy Haversack:

@Aquebogue: Tubes, wires, and prayers! The radio in the bathroom usually can get the signal only on the back of the toilet, with the antenna in contact with the metal shelf. So getting it aimed out the back window is a real Rube Goldberg effort. The middle of the apt. can't get radio at all, it seems!

I'd love to figure out an antenna for the bedroom radio that somehow could receive FMU. You wouldn't think the crap housing stock of north Brooklyn would block it so effectively. Probably the walls are actually just a thousand layers of lead paint.

@Handy --
Make sure it is outdoors, roof mounted, or in the attic. Most roof antennas will give you radio reception similar to a car radio, or often better. Try re-purposing a TV antenna you already have; use an FM splitter to use it on your radio.

I listen to WFMU via the ROKU version of the TuneIn app. I have a ROKU Ultra and the remote has a 3.5mm heatphone out jack and i connect a headphone to RCA cable between the remote and a RCA switchbox. The switchbox is connected to a Logitech X-240 2.1 speaker system. The station sounds great on it.

The problem with roof mounted antennas is the same as drying your clothes on a clothesline in NYC: It used to be anyone could do that but many buildings have leases that stipulate you can’t do that.

Except there is this ex-cop in my building who is good with the building owners so there is literally ONE antenna on the roof: A CB antenna so he can bullshit with the same people he talks to in front of the building but via CB… And his antenna is power boosted so I can’t own a turntable else his stupid crap leaks into the audio.

Anyway…

My TV antenna is a wire hanger supporting a speaker wire jammed onto the pin of a co-ax that runs into the digital converter box (purchased with a govt. coupon!). This works surprisingly well, but most TV channels are on the Empire State Building, which we have a clear LOS to from here. There's a lot of Manhattan between us and East Orange!

But the stereo in the bedroom needs a wire FM antenna and loop. If I could find one of those, maybe ... ?

just now tuning in....sorry i missed the terrestrial reception discussion. one of my favorite topics!
note to North Brooklyners: it’s mostly the bulk of Midtown Manhattan that interferes with the line-of-sight transmission from East Orange, apparently. Tivoli radios are the best receivers i’ve ever used to pick up 91.1. they work when others don’t. i just found a digital Sangean in a thrift shop and it works well, too. you still have to play around and move the unit and it’s antennae around to see what works best. my daily struggle to pick up 91.1 on my hi-fi in ridgewood, queens involves a complicated dance with the speaker wire antennae, paintings on the wall, houseplants, acoustic guitars, and couch pillows. switch the receiver to MONO....mono signals travel further.
sometimes i give up and listen on line...stereo, but not the....presence?

@DiL small business owner just trying to make an honest buck. What's not to like?

Speaking of shipping, Amazon seems to be throwing in the towel on having some items returned. I bought a picture frame for my bride and it arrived with broken glass (clearly broken before it was pack, as there wasn't enough broken pieces in the box to fill the frame). I asked for a return shipping label and instead they credited my account and told me to keep it. Same thing happened with my wife when a bowl she ordered arrived chipped. It was glass as well, so maybe they don't want to have to deal with a box with broken glass in it.

@PhillippeBastille: Nobody anywhere is accepting returns anymore unless it is a big ticket item. Too much hassle and you have to expose workers to opening stuff and potential exposure to COVID-19. This is true with some items on Amazon as well as pretty much every supermarket I know in Brooklyn.

Ever deal with OCD people who return stuff? It’s a disease. Endlessly waste time and resources. Better just give them credit or just deny a return or refund when there are more important things to deal with nowadays.

Vesuvio’s Pizza (since 1981):

Hi Pat,

I see you are up to your tired, crude ways once again, terrorizing the WFMU chat forums in an attempt to draw attention to your (admittedly) once-great cheesesteaks. Unfortunately, your chants have grown as weak as your grease-ridden, floppy pies, caked in intractable “cheese” and glorified catsup.

Listeners, if you would like to enjoy a slice of real, high-quality pizza, head over to Vesuvio’s Pizza (1305 Beaver Dam Road. Point Pleasant, NJ 08742). Situated in historic downtown amongst breweries, community parks and various cultural landmarks, our pizzeria is home to one of the finest examples of sfincione (“Sicilian Pizza”). Here at Vesuvio’s we’d be nothing without “u.”
