I was just thinking about Thomas Jefferson S.A., so this is a nice coincidence. I was thinking about how this is the only TJSA album I have, and about how I haven't pulled it out and listened to it in ages, and about how I should pull it out, and about how I should look for more stuff my them. That's what I was thinking about. And I think about other things, also, all the time. But that's what I was thinking about when I was thinking about TJSA. THE END.

@Handy: “L.A. Confidential” one of those modern classic films where it is truly re-watchable. “Black Dahlia” was a crappy film.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm
mariano:

I don't think anyone's ever done the Black Dahlia story justice. There was "True Confessions" with De Niro and Duval from the early 80s but that was only loosely based on the story.
  9:52pm
JakeGould:

@mariano: Yeah, but the source material was different in that film versus that DeNiro film.

They are both about the Black Dahlia murders; by the James Ellroy book is the source for the crappy DePalma film.

I finally got around to watching Altman's "The Long Goodbye." At first, it made me wish I'd watched a classic noir. But the longer, no pun intended, it went on, the more I liked it. To where, by the end, I thought it was a straight classic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm
Handy Haversack:

@Nate K: This is working. Kate just said, "This is special shit right here."

I *think* I tried to tune in this ep. on my shitty radio before I understood how the internet worked. Better now.

(Also: anent Long Goodbye: 100 percent same feeling.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm
Nate K.:

@Handy, glad you're digging it!
  10:15pm
JakeGould:

You mean the Eliot Gould “Long Goodbye?” I never liked that. it seems like the novelty of Eliot Gould being in that film is what makes it a cult classic.

I mean other modern noir films I can watch over and over again are “To Live and Die in L.A.”, “The Limey” and “Out of Sight.” Might put “Jackie Brown” in there but I am sick of Tarantino.
  10:16pm
JakeGould:

Also… “The Big Lebowski.” Comedy but it is a detective film at it‘s core.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm

Mystery: Plot
Noir: Everything Else
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm
Nate K.:

@Revo: That's excellent. I'm stealing that.
  10:19pm
JakeGould:

@RRN63: Mysteries are like Science Fiction tales… Ultimately puzzles with a clear ending. Noir might have a puzzle that needs to be solved but that is not the main thing that makes you watch the film.
  10:21pm
JakeGould:

This Silver Nichols is some serious “Sitting with my sadness as the sun sets…” music right there.

(With it. Clearly, I have many real problems.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm

Jackie Brown, Get Shorty and Out Of sight aside, Elmore Leonard has fared better on TV with Justified and even the short lived Karen Sisco and Maximum Bob series. The Get Shorty series isn't bad either, actually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
Handy Haversack:

Is that current, ultradamno? I really love Justified. One of my all-time faves.
  10:29pm
JakeGould:

Coppola’s “The Conversation” can be right in there as well. Very underrated film.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
mariano:

Yeah, Blue Velvet, abso-frickin'-lutely. Inland Empire is certainly noirish, but it's too non-linear to be truly noir since noir is so plot-driven. I know what you mean Handy, but every time I watch Mulholland I'm just so blown away by the performances, especially Naomi Watts's. And it has some of my favorite bits of Lynchian weirdness: the cowboy, Club Silencio, the Castiglione brothers, etc. Oh and speaking of Mulholland we can't leave out its spiritual ancestor Sunset Blvd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
ultradamno:

Get Shorty? I think it's still running, the first season is on Netflix. www.imdb.com...

hiya, Nate K. and everyone!
re: Black Dahlia -- heartbreaking story, that of Elizabeth Short -- i have the paperback somewhere, whose author claims "Daddy Was the Black Dahlia Murderer" -- but i do not recall it actually solving the crime . . . i saw "True Confessions" back when it opened (1980?) -- pretty decent, and i liked the interpretation in "American Horror Story" . . . i was totally psyched for the DePalma film! but then heard how awful it was :(

most of all, though, i remain heartbroken and angry -- all these stories surrounding Ms. Short, yet she never got justice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm

love JC Davis! great segue!
  10:34pm
Listener Robert:

The denouement-free story I'm thinking of was "Lost". At the end, viewers didn't even realize it was a viewer-solvable mystery. As far as I know, I'm the only one who's come even close, and then only because I'd been a friend of the show runner since he was a teen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
Handy Haversack:

Whoa, now I have a research project, Mungerphut! Excellent.
  10:35pm
kym:

slugluv: You're absolutely right! 'Black Dahlia Avenger' was an incredible read, and a lot of evidence points to the fact that George Hodel could have been involved with her murder but the author's case falls apart at a lot of points for me. The author being Hodel's son.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
Mungerphut:

@Handy, Oh wow you are in for some stories
  10:38pm
kym:

'Severed' was really riveting, also. I forget the author's name and whether he or his father had been on the LAPD at one point but he claims to have met Elizabeth Short when he was a child. Probably a false memory, but the picture the book paints of her is much more charming and eccentric than the version we usually see (i.e. just another desperate failed starlet).
  10:41pm
Listener Robert:

Oh, Mr. The K, after Mifflin could we please hear again from Mr. House? I sense that he's just about to burst.
Avatar 10:42pm
slugluv1313:

@ kym -- i just checked, the book i have is by Janice Knowlton -- have not read Hodel's book yet -- but want to! "Severed" too -- thank-you!
  10:46pm
kym:

@slugluv: You're welcome! It's a sad but fascinating rabbit hole to slide down. Hodel's book is truly amazing; it weirdly ties into the later laurel Canyon conspiracy stuff because George Hodel's daughter tamar was at the enter of an incest case that brought Hodel Sr to the attention of the LA police force. Tamar was later the best friend and mentor of michelle Phillips.

Also bizarre that there was more than one 'My Dad Killed the Dahlia' book.

“The Somatics” sounds like a very 1980s band.

(Still hoping Somatic Component is available as a band name!)

Nate, enjoying the show! missed it the first time. cool tunes, banter/info.

@slug: That's exactly where Hodel JR's book falls apart. He put forward a lot of compelling evidence, but then presents photos from his father's private photo album of a semi nude woman who is "obviously" Elizabeth Short. Only she so obviously is not.

Oh, and further compounding the noir connections, Hodel JR's mother is the ex-wife of John Huston. Honestly, the book is worth reading as a biography/tale of the darkest side of "Old Hollywood" even if none of the Dahlia theories are given credence.

Unit 5 was pretty close to a hit, depending on the year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Handy Haversack:

Definitely sounded like a track Michael Shelley might find no. 1 - worthy!

The Kids singer sounds like someone...can't put my finger on who... someone c.1980.

God DAYUM, Scott Williams sounds fine tonight.

@kym: Kinda like how Kenneth Anger’s “Hollywood Babylon” is a shocking book but utter bullshit.

So glad TEE recordings survived. So amazing. We know where punk started.
  11:26pm
JakeGould:

@kym: Well the non-sensational stuff in Anger’s book is the 25% that is true. The rest is nonsense. But very compelling in the pre-Internet world of being able to get away with a con like that.

@Jake: I think it is more twisted fairy tale than con.
  11:30pm
JakeGould:

@kym: True. I hesitated on that word but posted anyway. It’s more a piece of art based on the fantasies Anger — and others — have of what Hollywood was/is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm
Nate K.:

@Jake, the podcast "You Must Remember This" did an incident-by-incident breakdown of what was true and what was false in Anger's book.

@Chaos, yes, I do remember that. Would love to hear it. One of my memories of that show was buying one of the most f'd up t-shirts I've ever seen a band sell. But I couldn't fully see what was going on with it because of the black light.

Indiana does suck, in ways, and has nothing like the Ohio music scene. But, that's the way things are.

That Ohio guy just said Boo-tay. It was unpleasant.
