Godspeed You! Black Emperor  The Dead Flag Blues   Favoriting F# A# ∞  Kranky  1998  Godspeed You! Black Emperor began with Efrim Menuck, Mauro Pezzente and Mike Moya in Montréal in the early 90s, playing a handful of shows and recording a self-released cassette as a trio before beginning to transform the group into a large band. Recruiting numerous Montreal musicians through 1995-1996, GYBE mounted sense-rattling wall-of-sound performances, featuring as many as 14 musicians and several 16mm film projectors, eventually self-recording their debut vinyl-only version of F#A#∞, released on Constellation in late summer 1997. The band's Hotel2Tango warehouse space in Montréal's Mile-End district was a central hive of DIY activity, with band rehearsal rooms, silkscreen and wood shops, and weekend shows that took place under the radar. The group settled into a permanent 9-member line-up by late 1998, with Aidan Girt and Bruce Cawdron on drums, Thierry Amar and Mauro on basses, Efrim, Dave Bryant and Roger Tellier-Craig on guitars, and Norsola Johnson and Sophie Trudeau on cello and violin respectively. / The original recording of F♯ A♯ ∞ took place in 1997. By this time, the band had reached an unwieldy 15 members. In preparation of the album, they trimmed their numbers to 10. The culmination of material spanning back to 1993 resulted in 2 lengthy songs, each about 20 minutes in length. After the record's release, the band became interested in touring the US. In order to make headway, they sent a copy of their album to the Chicago-based record label Kranky. Impressed by the recording, Kranky offered to re-release the album on compact disc. The band quickly returned to the studio and re-recorded the album, which was released in June 1998. Changes to the album included the addition, subtraction and reorganization of material, resulting in 3 tracks & slightly over an hour of music.    0:09:44 (Pop-up)

Jack Nitzsche (performed by City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra)  Main Theme (from Starman)   Favoriting The Essential John Carpenter Film Music Collection  Silva America  2002  the music for "Starman" was written by Jack Nitzsche / The "Starman" soundtrack was one of the first ever released by Varèse Sarabande, on both LP and CD in 1990 / Born in Chicago, Illinois, and raised on a farm in Newaygo, Michigan, Nitzsche, son of German immigrants, moved to Los Angeles in 1955 with ambitions of becoming a jazz saxophonist. He was hired by Sonny Bono, who was at the time an A&R (artists and repertory) executive at Specialty Records, as a music copyist. While there Nitzsche wrote a novelty hit called "Bongo Bongo Bongo". Nitzsche wrote with Bono the song "Needles and Pins" for Jackie DeShannon, later recorded by the Searchers. He became arranger and conductor for producer Phil Spector, and orchestrated the Wall of Sound for the song "River Deep, Mountain High" by Ike and Tina Turner. In 1964, he met the Rolling Stones and went on to play keyboards on their albums "The Rolling Stones," "Now!" (The Rolling Stones No. 2 in the UK), "Out of Our Heads," "Aftermath" and "Between the Buttons" as well as on their hit singles "Paint It, Black" and "Let's Spend the Night Together." He collaborated with Neil Young, beginning with producing "Expecting to Fly" by Buffalo Springfield. Nitzsche played electric piano with Crazy Horse throughout 1970. Despite frequent clashes with Billy Talbot and Ralph Molina, Nitzsche remained with the band after Young left in 1970. Nitzsche produced the band's 1971 self-titled debut album and sang lead vocal on "Crow Jane Lady". Nitzsche began to concentrate more on film music rather than pop music in the mid-1970s, becoming one of the more prolific film orchestraters in Hollywood during the period. In 1983, he received the Academy Award for Best Song for co-writing "Up Where We Belong" (from the 1982 film An Officer and a Gentleman) with Will Jennings and Buffy Sainte-Marie. Nitzsche had also worked on film scores throughout his career, such as his contributions to the Monkees movie Head, the theme music from Village of the Giants (recycling an earlier single, "The Last Race") and the soundtracks for Performance (1970), The Exorcist (1973), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), Hardcore (1979), The Razor's Edge (1984) and Starman (also 1984).    2:35:59 (Pop-up)
Frank Zappa  Watermelon In Easter Hay (Live) / Stop Giving People A Reason...   Favoriting           2:40:49 (Pop-up)
Frank Zappa  Watermelon In Easter Hay   Favoriting Joe's Garage  Zappa Records  1979  Frank Zappa developed the song, "Watermelon In Easter Hay," during his live performances in 1978. The first recorded instance of "Watermelon in Easter Hay" was at at the Hammersmith Odeon in London on January 27, 1978. Another version was recorded a month later in Germany and is available on "Frank Zappa Plays The Music Of Frank Zappa." / On drummer who played on "Joe's Garage" album: Many consider Vinnie Colaiuta the most advanced drummer who played with Zappa. Here is Steve Vai: “He’s one of the most amazing sight-readers that ever existed on the instrument. One day we were in a Frank rehearsal, this was early ’80s, and Frank brought in this piece of music called “Mo ‘N Herb’s Vacation.” Just unbelievably complex. All the drums were written out, just like “The Black Page” except even more complex. There were these runs of like 17 over 3 and every drumhead is notated differently. And there were a whole bunch of people there, I think Bozzio was there. Vinnie had this piece of music on the stand to his right. To his left he had another music stand with a plate of sushi on it, okay? Now the tempo of the piece was very slow, like “The Black Page.” And then the first riff came in, [mimics bizarre Zappa-esque drum rhythm patterns] with all these choking of cymbals, and hi-hat, riffs, spinning of rototoms and all this crazy stuff. And I saw Vinnie reading this thing. Now, Vinnie has this habit of pushing his glasses up with the middle finger of his right hand. Well I saw him look at this one bar of music, it was the last bar of music on the page. He started to play it as he was turning the page with one hand, and then once the page was turned he continued playing the riff with his right hand, as he reached over with his left hand, grabbed a piece of sushi and put it in his mouth, continued the riff with his left hand and feet, pushed his glasses up, and then played the remaining part of the bar. It was the slickest thing I have ever seen. Frank threw his music up in the air. Bozzio turned around and walked away. I just started laughing.” / On "Joe’s Garage" Zappa continued to use his technique of xenochrony, the placement of previously recorded material on top of studio tracks. Almost all his guitar solos on the album were recorded during live performances from his 1978 tours, and he let band members accompany these solos in the studio and improvise on top of them. He recorded only one new solo for Joe’s Garage and that was "Watermelon in Easter Hay." As for the name, Zappa told an interviewer: “If a drummer overplays, if the bass player overplays or the keyboard overplays . . . if they don’t have any sensitivity to what I’m doing or if they aren’t smart enough to track the direction that I am going in, it’s like dragging an anchor. In fact, I’ll point out the way that song, “Watermelon in Easter Hay” got its name. It’s from the statement that playing a solo with this band is like trying to grow a watermelon in Easter hay. And most of the bands that I’ve had, it was like that. It’s been just recently where I’ve had rhythm sections that don’t get in my way and let me do what I am going to do.”    2:45:41 (Pop-up)

To climb the Mountain - you have to know it's there. That's where LSD came in! So easy to forget that damn Mtn. tho'. & it's still there to climb.
Love Mr. Frank's gittar.

OK LixLife, this is gonna sound like a scene from Dinner with Andre, but here is what I'm saying:
You can take some people all over the world an show them different ways of living, and they will change their minds about lots of things. But you can take some other people on the same journey, and they will not be curious and they will change their minds about nothing.
I've seen this. It is distressing, but some people, you just can't reach.
