I heard (and really dug) "The End" long before I saw Apocalypse Now. But the movie instantly and indelibly shaped my experience of that song. It all worked out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm
Funky16Corners:

Apocalypse Now is till one of my fave movies of the 70s, and Coppola really made good use of the song
Avatar 3:34pm
still b/p:

Stone's attempts to capture head trips felt pretty conventional and unaffecting. And like many biopics, it became a cycle of main figure behaving badly, then a little more stuff, then main figure behaving worse...on and on. Maybe not inaccurate, but not too interesting.
  3:34pm
Leslie:

The Door's first album was my 2nd lp, bought for me by my dad. I still love the Doors, the movie sucked as did Kilmer. I used one of their songs for an English paper in 9th grade, about desolation.

  3:39pm
Leslie:

The one with Kilmer - never watched Apocalypse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm
Funky16Corners:

I think - now that Manzarek is gone - someone should mount an attempt on a Morrison doc. It could use some reflection and sober (no pun intended) commentary. None of that shaman shit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

But for the direct experience of the doors Live - which is something the studio work is not - it's 'The Doors Are Open'.

Hiya, Larry the G, and all.

WR:

I have no idea about rest of world perception about Morrison & the Doors. Many in my peer group, including me loved the first 3 albums. Some mixed reception on Soft Parade and not sure what to think about Morrison Hotel. In late fall of '70 several of my friends were going to see them. I, the only one who had not seen them before, showed up and didn't have a ticket and no money, so I declined to take a loan and see if I could get a ticket at the door. I opted instead to wait at their apartment watching a huge jack 'o lantern melt. Though it turned out to be one of the last shows with Morrison, I sorta think it was best to not see only the end.

I'd like to see Nick Cave admit the doors - but with Elvis & Iggy it's a small world. Joy Division & the Bunnymen like to say they were about Iggy & Bowie & recognized themselves in the doors after the fact. Don't quite buy it. I'd argue the doors are so fundamental & early it's hard to image even Mark E. Smith without them - but what if (not) is always only an exercise...

If I should start rating The Doors' albums, Morrison Hotel would easily make it to the upper half of the list. This song (Waiting For the Sun) was very cathartic for me as an 8-year old kid, even if I had very little idea about the lyrics (English not being my first language, young age and all)

@Erica - I do too, but they aged well, like a fine wine
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm

despite whatever else Ray was always a superb musician -in every sense. and not a bad singer.

my favorite doors album. (speaking of maturing)

Also I am completely biased, as Morrison Hotel is the first Doors album I heard. It did the job for me - even the Oliver Stone movie making Doors fans of my moronic class"mates" could not drive me away from the music - I actually heard the 2., 3. & 4. album only then, in my early teens.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm
Funky16Corners:

An aside, the Doors have some pretty spectacular album covers. That Henry Diltz picture on Morrison Hotel is classic

i once applied for a job at the local rhino record store. the application said to name my top 10 favorite albums. i wrote down 20, which was very difficult.

Were they weeding out bad taste?

i don't know but i'm not surprised i didn't get the job, and glad i didn't!

Good point on visuals.
I mean - the actual Music of the psychedelic experience - there was no way the doors could not have been included for me.
For 20 Albums - @ this stage I feel like the Beatles Remasters box is one album...but - digress...

our band played this song. we were a punk band primarily but the bass player wanted to play the doors and yes, and we did.
i was the only one that knew the lyrics but i had trouble drumming and singing this song simultaneously.

sorry i had to leave for soft parade before Larry! i just can't stand most of it...though you did play one of the 2 songs i like from it. (wishful sinful; the other one, wild child)

And you can tell they learned the lyrics (incorrectly) from the record
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm
coelacanth∅:

...there is that introduction to (the incohesive amalgam of scraps of ideas that became) the title track. when that came on when i had friends over i pushed it beyond the perpetually pushing it with my mother, who was always stewing in the other end of the apartment, and turned it up as loud as my system would go "YOU CANNOT PETITION THE LORD WITH PRAYER!"
-and everyone freaked for a minute!

Cigarette / Forget in fact lifted from Van & Them's 'You Just Can't Win'.
Soul Kitchen just makes explicit to me the doors presented this whole aspect of Psychedelia that was not flowers. The THC more than the CBD as it were.
