Avatar 10:06pm
Kris Holmes:

Ha, maybe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm

You lost your connection for a few seconds

Candy-O'67:

Hey, Kris, Matt, chresti, JtotheK, Jesse, and WR! Good to be here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
WR:

I've been getting cut from WFMU the last few hours. Thought it was me but if you heard it too Matt, think it may be the stream and not Kris.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
Candy-O'67:

How was your trip to CA, Kris?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
WR:

Jumping on an Ikea bed, not recommended.

Hi Candy-O'67.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm
JtotheK:

hiya Candy-o!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Looking forward to the Trini documentary
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm
Candy-O'67:

I bet that will be interesting, Matt. I'll be on the lookout for its release, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
JtotheK:

When I was looking thru a bunch of 45s with Flavor Dave (miss ya, buddy) we found Trini 'Sinner Not A Saint' and Dave was so thrilled. Great tune! Arb spun something by Trini on her cannibal stew show on the jungle stream, but I can't recall what it was offhand, just that I enjoyed it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
Matt from New Orleans:

He recorded so much in 63 & 64 and by 65 he was on the down swing.
Avatar 10:26pm
Kris Holmes:

CA trip was pretty good thanks Candy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
Candy-O'67:

Good to hear, Kris
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Your facts are mostly correct if slightly off
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm
WR:

I thought Rocky was singing in Italian but Los Piranas doesn't look Italian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
chresti:

I gotta check out early, thanks Kris! See yous all later!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
Candy-O'67:

later, chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
Matt from New Orleans:

There’s a brand new cover of this Kris by a LA based singer called Lady Blackbird. Her version is way slowed down compared to this and the Voices of East Harlem.
Avatar 10:36pm
Kris Holmes:

I'll take mostly correct as a win lol
Avatar 10:37pm
Kris Holmes:

Night Chresti
Avatar 10:37pm
Kris Holmes:

Matt, for real? Crazy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
WR:

Bye chresti.
Avatar 10:39pm
Kris Holmes:

I gotta check that out. I don't even remember the VoEH version!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Matt from New Orleans:

VOEH is called Dead or Alive I believe. Her first single was a cover of Nina Simone’s Blackbird. Her third single which isn’t out yet is a cover of Sam Cooke’s Lost & Lookin’ if I remember correctly.
Avatar 10:48pm
Kris Holmes:

Thanks, sounds like something I'd like
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Matt from New Orleans:

It took me a while to remember what Sam Cooke song it was. At first I thought it had love in the title but none of those sounded right. Then I eventually opened Night Beat on Discogs for the third time and it finally clicked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Matt from New Orleans:

She has a great voice. I just got overloaded by her as so many British DJs I listen to have been playing her songs. There were also three remixes of Blackbird released as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Matt from New Orleans:

He also got married and bought a Ferrari with two weeks.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
JtotheK:

Yay! I know this song can divide the Northern Soul crowd, but I like it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Candy-O'67:

I like it, too, JtotheK
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Matt from New Orleans:

It’s not the version that sold for all that money
Avatar 10:55pm
Kris Holmes:

Lee & I have actually corresponded a bit when he has tried to buy records off me, he seems nice enough, good on him!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I don’t begrudge his spending his money on it. It just seems insane to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
JtotheK:

@Kris - Absolutely! I often wonder if the bottom will fall out of the Norther Soul / funk / sweet soul etc etc markets.
Avatar 10:58pm
Kris Holmes:

Matt: Because we're comparatively poor
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
JtotheK:

(And then 100,000 gbp dropped, but that Frank is clearly always going to be an outlier.) But wasn't there (at one point) a much larger set of doowop collectors and those records going for money? and not so much anymore?
Avatar 11:00pm
Kris Holmes:

It will fall out in about 10-20 years for Northern when everyone starts dying off, like what happened with doo wop & elvis & hot jazz
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
JtotheK:

Or is the 'scarcity' factor always going to apply? Maybe I'm wondering this out loud because I just finished the book "The Truth About Northern Soul" by Stephen Riley.
Avatar 11:03pm
Kris Holmes:

To a certain extent though the high end will always be high
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Every collecting hobby eventually has a crash but the super rare stuff will always be super rare and as long as it’s viewed as a investment commodity the price won’t go down that much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I have baseball cards that used to be worth hundreds of dollars that now don’t break 50
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I should have sold them at the high but I was a long term investor that was stupid. Luckily overall I never got underwater but I lost thousands of paper value.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
JtotheK:

Yeah about 5 years ago I sold a bunch of my 45s, then gradually got back into it (and have since re-bought a number of what I sold). LPs I am always pruning. But I've wondered about 45s, at what point are younger generations not going to be into this music at all?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I follow a bunch of young British DJs in their 20s who spin soul. So there’s a generation who will have more money in 20 years to buy originals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
Matt from New Orleans:

One group of them formed a reissue label that’s putting out reissues of crazy expensive sides. deptfordnorthernsoulclub.bandcamp.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Not trying to recreate the original 45s but two sides back to back that they think work together.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
JtotheK:

wasn't familiar with that - thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm
Matt from New Orleans:

My pleasure Jason
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm

never heard this Myrna, only ever heard this song by Chuck Jackson.

I hear differently while I'm driving. That's why I drive around in circles after dinner.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm
Candy-O'67:

Yeah, it is a different feeling to drive and listen...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
Candy-O'67:

This Chubby Checker song is soooooo good!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm
Candy-O'67:

First time I heard it was when The Knave played it about a month ago or so
Avatar 11:38pm
Kris Holmes:

it's definitely a high point in his catalog
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm
Candy-O'67:

For sure!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm
Franco Twinkie:

Problem is, I tend to drive faster while listening intently and right now my truck has lapsed registration which is asking for it I know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
Candy-O'67:

Go take care of that, brother!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
Candy-O'67:

Of course, when you can
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm
Franco Twinkie:

Copy that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm
Candy-O'67:

Kris, you've started a dance party!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm
Franco Twinkie:

See, if I was listening to Gypsy and I Need Love I'd be driving across front lawns.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm
Candy-O'67:

That's so tight, Franco! I love it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Did you all see the woman who renewed her license and instead of her face was a picture of an empty chair? Somehow the picture they took didn’t get linked to her account properly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm
WR:

The Knave played Gypsy by Chubby Checker when he subbed for you on the 21st.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm
Franco Twinkie:

No dancing for you, Mr. Sore Foot!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm
Candy-O'67:

I heard that, WR. It blew me away the first time I heard it then!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm
Candy-O'67:

Didn't hear about that, Matt. I just had to get my license renewed in June and they did the same pic since I renewed online cause of Covid and they did the new pics in black and white now in TX
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm
Franco Twinkie:

Chubby Checker on a shit load of drugs, is that a stand alone show?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm
WR:

Yes, Candy, I went to click fave & saw we had already faved it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm
Candy-O'67:

I do believe, Franco.

I favorited it again, WR! I need to find that one
Avatar 11:49pm

There's literally one LP & maybe 2 45s & that's it! I could probably do that show though since I think I have them all present & accounted for.

Well, let's expand on that idea - how about a show of many artist who were completely out of their mind on drugs, not just the checkered one?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm

The The Third Booth I Need Love record is an interesting garage psych on an unusual label.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm

On one of his many excursions into inner space, do you think Chubby Checker ever encountered the Checkered Demon?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm
