I never miscue a record. I am punctual, well-prepared, and dislike clutter. Outgoing and helpful, I'm always appropriately dressed. I do not behave erratically and have excellent penmanship. My CD's never skip, and I am in good health. I like all the notes, in any order.

U. Srinivas was perhaps the best concert I've ever been to. Certainly very special. Totally moving & spellbinding. The musicians (a quartet) were more focused and present than anyone else I've ever seen perform. I felt fortunate to even be in the same room as them, breathing the same air. R.I.P. "Mandolin" U. Srinivas.

Years ago somebody left a copy of Srinivas' "Dawn Raga" in my room ... it just showed up one day, I'm not sure who left it there ... possibly someone I was dating but they never mentioned it. Seemed like a bit of magic. I've listened to that disc so many times now - usually at dawn, sometimes after being up all night. Totally transcendent music, it had a major impact on me. Very happy to hear Srinivas here today.

YETI BOB:

Raga Hemavati (the scale/mode used in Srikanthimati) is the same as the Ukranian Minor scale - like a natural minor, but with a raised 4 and a major 6. Most Indian ragas don't map as neatly onto Western scales (I supposed Ukraine is on the eastern edge of the West - it still sounds a bit "exotic")

We had Ukrainian friends of the family because Slavs are tight like that. In Polish, kraj (cry) is country and Ukrainians were 'ooh-cry-eenski'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm

Oh, and family gatherings, music was played and the Ukrainian gent, Pan Mike, played awesome guitar and sang. In retrospect, the tunings were quite Eastern.

Hey @Yeti Bob! My mom was an expert gardener and cook too. My dad played harmonica, zither, spoons, and he sang. My cousin, Regina played the accordion. Pan Mike was on guitar. Good times.

I'm a second-generation Russian immigrant on my dad's side, spent my formative years in a Ukrainian bar in the East Village, and have lived in a Polish neighborhood for more than twenty years. But because I suck I have learned how to say only "hello," "thanks," and "will you please turn the lights back on?" And the swears.
Avatar 12:39pm
YETI BOB:

@paddy: Another interesting fact is that traditionally, ragas are associated with certain times of day. It's very hard to follow this as a DJ though, and even at Indian classical music concerts it's very common to hear morning and afternoon ragas in the evening. The only time I've been able to hear ragas at the right time of day (other than listening at home) is the Ragamala, which is a 24-hour marathon Indian music festival. (Another one of those things that I find so life-affirming and sustaining, and which probably won't happen this year, sigh). At the Ragamala you can hear 3AM ragas at 3AM (while lying on the floor, hope you brought a pillow). It's the greatest thing, even if you fall asleep.

@Krys, HH: I have lived for close to 2 decades in or near the Chicago neighborhood known as "Ukrainian Village". And also "Polish Triangle". There's a bunch of Ukrainian delis & stores and a Ukrainian Art Museum. Bars with signs that say "Zimne Piwo". Seeing old ladies walking around who remind me of my grandmother. I love it here. (I know there are similar neighborhoods in the boroughs of NYC).

@Paddy: I have yet to see Brooklyn Raga Massive live - would love to. Last year they made an album with Adam Rudolph's "Go: Organic Orchestra" (I'm a huge fan of Adam Rudolph), called "Ragamala: A Garland of Ragas.". It's unique and wonderful (I'd call it a "gem" but it's too sprawling) and it's on Bandcamp goorganicorchestra.bandcamp.com...

@Paddy: Also I am so far from an expert on raga, but it fascinates me, and there's so much information available on Wikipedia and other places. For example this one - Raga Jounpuri - uses a scale structure like C D F G A♭ B♭ C. No 3 at all! It's supposed to convey "certain glorious grandeur or awe".

@Bryce: I think everyone who plays ICM on the radio or schedules concerts, does the same thing, with very few exceptions. I hope the health consequences are not too serious!

@Bryce: I'm researching the "time of day" thing a bit more (I've been interested in this topic for a while, having done some radio shifts myself) - apparently this rule is not as old as the ragas themselves, it's not found in older musical texts, and may have been sort of made-up to help distingush Hindustani (Northern) from Carnatic (Southern) traditions - it's apparently only a rule in Hindustani music (?) And it's not always easy to distinguish Carnatic from Hindustani, even for seasoned listeners. It was first elaborated by Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande at the first All-India Music Conference in Baroda in 1916, according to this very interesting (but long) article: scroll.in...
