Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm

i never heard (/read) that; but what's most interesting to me right now is that i've always assumed Paul was just holding out on the carnival of light.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Listening Out There: This past Saturday, a friend and I visited the last two actual old-school phone booth in NYC, and made up a song about each one on the spot and sang it to each of them. How WFMU is that (and by "WFMU" I mean deranged, of course)?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm
Charlie:

Hi Roberto! Yup, I love Akiko Yano.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm
Gaylord Fields:

@coelacanth∅: In the '60s, Paul had vague plans to release an album of his more outré tape loops, etc., and call it "Paul McCartney Goes Too Far" — and then "Two Virgins" came about.
Avatar 3:42pm
Listening Out There:

@Gaylord: You gonna be broadcasting those songs next Sunday?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm
Charlie:

Going back to Erica's question, all music is organized sound, or vice versa. Pop music can be very strange from a purely aural standpoint. and if you listen to any avant stuff a few times, it starts to sound normal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm
coelacanth∅:

Danny there are countless "fake" ones. a few years ago i jacked all of them on youboob that were remotely interesting. i have 11 fake carnivals of light at this point

@Charlie: People who've heard "Carnival of Light" say it's a bit of a formless mess — i.e., likely more listenable than "Two Virgins" or "Electronic Sound"!

@Listening Out There: I know you were just ribbing me, kind friend, but there's way too much actual good music by other people that I can't even fathom playing something that self-indulgent within my precious two-hour allotment.

Danny, some of those "carnival of lights" are very well-researched, and some effort made creating them. over the years, apparently (Gaylord probably knows about how) a few details of the original's contents leaked out and some folks took voice samples of Paul and John to stick in there -or did a fairly good job simulating their voices speaking certain phrases.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm
Gaylord Fields:

@coelacanth∅: Paul is heavily invested in people knowing precisely that he was the tape-loop-making, Stockhausen-enjoying, Berio-palling-around-with, sonically adventurous Beatle. And yes, Paul, Ringo, Yoko all OK'd "Carnival" for Anthology, but George put the kibosh on it.

Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Hey hey!
@coela @danny @gaylord:
what I personally find insanely frustrating is that the UK laws re:copyright extension changed around 2013 (if I remember right). Therefore while they had to put out some digital copyright extension releases consisting of Beatles outtakes from 1963, to my knowledge not much has emerged later on. Had the law not changed, we might have been treated to some of that formless mess already.
On the other hand, it could be argued that the piece was in fact released back then as it was used as background music at that Roundhouse event the name of which escapes me right now. Using this argument, there would be no legal obligation to re-release the music. A UK-based solicitor specializing in legal matters & music/media "might" know loads more than poor speculating me.

Doug Schulkind:

Noel Paul Stookey (Paul of PP&M) founded a fine community radio station in Blue Hill, Maine. I listen to it (WERU) when we're summer vacationing in the area.

I think I heard Too Much of Nothin' when I was younger but it's been years.

Wendy-- so that's where Bob Dylan (who wrote Too Much of Nothing) stole that line from!

Now that is a real Charlie show -- old favorites, new finds, lesser heard works from artists, Gelbart, PLU, and, of course, Tipsy's "Bunny Kick." Yay! Good to hear you. Thanks for the show.

PS: Pulsallama have just reissued that classic and a whole bunch more. So much cool in one band, and then Ann was so hot in The Hunger. The B-side of the 7" won my heart in the '80s. Still have it.
