what's nice about Pfirsichhain (if anyone cares) is - aside from meaning "peach grove" - the nice, flowing sequence of characteristically German sounds 'pf', 'r' and '-ch'. And the unusual cluster 'chh'.

(I'm bending the truth here slightly. Nude swimming is by no means the universal preference in Germany. And plenty of other European countries have hangups about it, or otherwise marginalize it as well. But still - it's a very different default reality, nonetheless).

Honeybear: when I was in Europe in 1986 as part of a school group, my best friend and I got really drunk during the day in Munich, then when we went to the English Garden, we went skinny-dipping in front of everyone, teachers, parents, chaperones. It had something to do with our recent discovery of anarchism, or so we flattered ourselves into believing.

Avatar 1:43am
Honeybear:

@mariano - good for you - it's nice to have these experiences at tender young ages. but the thing is, it really isn't about anarchism (as I see it). but rather - life in the u.s. really is very brutally controlled, and in so many ways that we don't even see it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46am
mariano:

Yeah, we didn't have the most subtle understanding of anarchism. During that trip my friend and I were drunk 24/7 and we didn't even get into trouble because it was the 80s. Even snuck some weed over, and we somehow even managed to smoke a joint in a bathroom of the Dallas airport during our departure and not get caught.
Avatar 1:48am
Honeybear:

what's scary though is that some people do get caught for such things - or even set up for nothing at all - and their life is completely ruined as a result

Seattle is a rat disaster area. Every neighborhood has rats walking on the sidewalks between buildings and in bushes. The tunneling for the freeway went under downtown for 5 years and there have been over 90 holes dug for new high rises. Trip over the rats near where the Seattle Times used to be. Tonight I saw rats outside Swedish hospital.

My sense about Germany is that it's actually become more conservative with things ike nude bathing - nudity on TV - you used to see a fair amount of it, even in prime time. Not any more. In some ways, it's socially progressive in other ways - most definitely christian-conservative. Abortion? Safe and legal, but only for 12 weeks!! Gay marriage was only really legalized a few years back Civil unions were alowed in '99 but adoption, sharing of finances and stuff. --not then it wasn't. Pot? Not legal, and no plans to make it so.

Wolfgang: in Germany I also noticed a pretty big disparity between the cities and small towns in terms of general permissiveness. My data points are Norden, Crailsheim, Hemsbach, and a few others over the years I'd have to try to remember. Definitely a vibe similar to small towns in the American South. Of course everyone was very friendly and hospitable, but you could tell it was a much more conservative mindset.

Teraza 7 has a nice outdoor set-up, people well spaced. But will they have heat lamps now that it’s below 60 degrees?
Oh, Hello, visitors to the Carcasa.
Avatar 2:26am
Honeybear:

@Wolfgang - yup nude bathing has been dialed down a notch, but it's still going strong (last I checked). Abortion is less available than in the U.S. - but then the rights we have here are constantly under attack, and can change on a dime. Pot isn't legal - but it was also effectively decriminalized long beore it was even thinkable to think of some kind of a relaxation of the drug laws in the U.S.

Avatar 2:34am

Honeybear: it's starting to change though as more states legalize. Weed, in my experience, has always been easy to get and smoke, in some places pretty openly, despite its status. The worst thing is that it's been used by police to target minorities.
