Favoriting Acid Jazz Hands with Bronwyn Bishop: Playlist from December 11, 2020 Favoriting

Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

I slipped the usher a 20, and she agreed to seat me late. Sorry... sorry... sorry... sorry.. I think that's my seat. 22H. Oh, wait, what row is this??? Oh God.

Hi Gregory! That's an excellent impression of me and my friend the one time I went to a British pantomime

Avatar 7:20pm

Me too!! Love the late 60s, wish I could have been around for them

They were not a complete joy-fest at the time.

Man. Blade. Leather. I think of Sweeney Todd.

Oscar Brand served as the host of Folksong Festival on WNYC AM for more than seven decades.
Avatar 7:38pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

I love Oscar Brand
Avatar 7:38pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

That's apparently the longest-running show with one host in history...until this one beats it of course

WR:

I saw podcast with Amanda Palmer and Storm Large recently, one memorable part was when they went all fangirl over Cabaret & their personal moments meeting Liza Minnelli. Storm had Minnelli sitting stage side during one of her performances in Cabaret.
Avatar 7:39pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Wow!!! I would love to meet Liza
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm
Webhamster Henry:

The Codger might contest that, but a lot of his shows were just for himself in his bunker.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm
Sweet Corn Lizzie:

There's a person named Storm Large?? Off to google this.

There’s a Shakespeare Company of New Jersey???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm
Webhamster Henry:

Every week, you pull up Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway pieces, many of which with original books. Contrast that to the just released Disney schedule of sequels and rehashes. Grr.
Avatar 7:52pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Gregory: Yes, and my dad used to be part of it and recorded an album called "Fine Young Madrigals" with its little madrigal group in 1990, and a couple years ago I found it in WFMU's library, where it had been since before I was born (thus ends my NJ shakespeare theater story)
Avatar 7:53pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Henry: It really makes me sad...this is why I write my own (weird) musicals! But they ain't getting anywhere near broadway anytime soon
Avatar 🎭 7:57pm
Listener Gregory:

That’s a great story, Bronwyn. I was raised in NJ, and I wish someone had taken me to a Shakespearean play or two.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:00pm
WR:

WHH, yes. I Disney not musical related, I saw something about there being 10 or whatever Star Wars related productions in progress that will only be on their streaming service and I am like, is that all you got?
Avatar 8:01pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

I remember when Star Wars movies were rare and thus exciting
Avatar 8:01pm

fun fact: this is the backing vocalist on total eclipse of the heart (the "turn around bright eyes" guy)

Too bad Rory Dodd didn't star in Sweeney Todd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm

That would have been odd.

Listener Gregory:

Does anyone have any knowledge of the new Netflix version of Ma Rainey's Black Bottom? I have the vague memory of seeing a version back in the day... on stage? or public TV??? It's not quite a musical, but it's about music, certainly.
Avatar 🎭 8:08pm
Listener Gregory:

(Lyrics to the Requiem by God. No royalties needed.)
Avatar 8:11pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Hi Doug!! Rory Dodd could have had Anthony or Toby potential, although Rory Dodd IS Sweeney Todd would have been great marketing (though bad casting)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:13pm
WR:

LG, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom? Didn't know Netflix done that. Heard the album of the original. Never saw it.
Avatar 🎭 8:14pm

In the two seconds you see of Viola Davis playing Ma Rainey, she seems awesome. And nothing like Viola Davis. So, I have hope.

I believe Netflix has have a movie version of Ma Rainey's..., Which is supposed to get a limited theater release (to pretend it's a real movie for Oscars), then will be shown on Netflix. I think I saw the show, but my memory is also vague..m

I wonder if there is a mahjong musical
Avatar 🎭 8:24pm

Ma Rainey had a Broadway revival in 2003 starring Whoopie Goldberg. I don't think I see that.
