Often mistaken for ticks (as babies) or moths (as adults), the spotted lanternfly is neither. Instead, it is known as a “hopper” and grows its wings only in the adult stage.

been listening, digging (getting ready to head out for kitty sitting ! 🐱🐱)
i have noticed Lantern Flies mostly around newer buildings -- last year, all over the side of one of the high rises near the 9th Street light rail station in Hoboken -- and this year, tons of them around that 80 story building near Exchange Place (marketed as "the tallest building in New Jersey") (next day i saw a dude spraying some sort of insecticide, on the trees outside the building too) -- a friend pointed out that maybe the Lantern Flies had laid eggs in some of the construction materials -- ??
but stomping them, killing the Lantern Flies? i just cannot do that -- mainly because my brain completely short-circuits whenever humans refer to another species as "invasive" and "destructive" -- how much damage have we done to Polar Bears, Monarch Butterflies, Bees, etc., all in the name of "progress"? -- and of course if i got caught sabotaging logging equipment, i would be arrested and labeled an "eco-terrorist" 🌱🌿🌲

After listening to these clowns go on & on about what algaecide is best to dump in the lake to clear the water from being brownish (especially along the shore where many lakefront owners rake their leaves directly into the lake in fall).
I said "why don't people stop raking their leaves into the lake. That will stop the browning as what you see are naturally occurring tanins from leaf decomposition (think tea).
They told me I'm not a member so I have to leave. SMFH

when i was growing up though, we rarely saw deer -- and yes, the house we lived in was invasive too, but there was a farm behind our "property," and tons of wooded areas . . . until much of it was destroyed in order to build mcmansions

oh yes the cats LOVE them! 😹😹
last year, was cat sitting where the cats had access to a roof garden/deck -- i noticed them eyeballing *something* but could not figure out what -- until i saw a Lantern Fly walking about

Wild Bird Fund (in NYC) and The Raptor Trust (in NJ) have a lot of helpful tips too
when i was little, we rescued a baby Robin -- my Dad built a wooden crate for the little guy, my Mom and sister and i fed him earthworms -- TOTALLY drove the cats nuts! 😸😸 . . . we would take him outside, eventually he must have known he was "grown up" enough, and he flew away

This morning is my chance, finally, to find out what this "Bad Animals" program is about. (Are they really all bad? or are they all really bad?)
