These are the records I could imagine floating around the studio, and being in his own personal collection, as he djs in 1967. Choosing a year has really made these mixes a lot more fun to make ive found.

Also, it just so happens I watched Good Morning, Vietnam for the first time two weeks ago and loved it. So this show comes at a nice time for me when that movie's first impression on me is still fresh in my mind.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm

the movie is supposedly set in 1965, at least the beginning is. When Cronauer steps off the plane, in Saigon, and goes to work for AFVN, it’s 1965. But we don’t know how long he was there, in the story. The movie could be interpreted as taking place quickly over a short period of time. Does he get himself sent home almost immediately, or does it take a couple of years?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm
postconsumer:

one thing we know for sure is Robin Williams is playing a dj caricature of his own creation, and is "Adrian Cronauer," the real dj from AFVN, in name only. so there was a lot of freedom to explore the territory...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm
postconsumer:

In reality, according to the internet, which is unreliable (never forget), he was in Saigon from 1965 to 1966, but it says his service ended in 1967 - so, who knows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm
postconsumer:

Im working my way to a point here. trust me. 🤣
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm
postconsumer:

I chose 1967 because one of the key moments in the film includes What a Wonderful World, recorded by Louis Armstrong, which came out in 1967. So that’s how the year was chosen. Thankfully, as popular music was really changing in the last half of the sixties, and being able to include songs from 1966 and 1967 made for a much more dynamic mix. very interesting to see what was happening EXACTLY at this turning point.

Many of the really famous "teen" singles from this era are still fun to listen to, even if the lyrics are clearly written by and for teenagers. Not this one, though. I love this song. First heard The Cramps version of course
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm
Krys O.:

↳ postconsumer @5:45
Garrity was considerably older than other pop stars at the time, but he was energetic and wacky making him seem more youthful. I used to watch Ready, Steady Go on the Disney channel in the late 80s. Dave Clark bought the rights to the series and did the intro each week. There was one where the Four Pennies were performing a soppy ballad Juliet. Garrity was in the audience. He spotted the camera and started mugging making faces. Minutes later he is whisked away out of camera shot.

I guess most people probably know this, but I learned recently this song, an instrumental, was BANNED on the radio in many, many places... because of the title. Not the lyrics, obviously.

The Godfather of Soul oozed sexuality which probably was banned on many white-owned radio stations in the South.

I think postconsumer is referring to Link Wray's "Rumble". It indeed was banned because it was thought the title could provoke riots I think.

"Rumble" by Link Wray. I guess they associated the word with "gang fight." If it had referred to a fist fight or something more white, there wouldn't have been an issue. my theory

“Liar, Liar” was recorded at Kay Bank Studios, on Nicollet, in Minneapolis. The street address of the building, 2541 Nicollet inspired the song 2541 by Grant Hart of Husker Du. Castaways founding member James Donna lived in NE Minneapolis in the 1960s. His Dad worked at Honeywell in Minneapolis, where my Dad worked, in the 80s.

originally had some sixties era commercials in there, too, but it was way too much so i removed everything but the us army psas

primary radio ads aired, aside from the PSAs, on AFVN in Saigon? Commercials for the latest Disney movies, which would screen in town, for the soldiers.

Working on a one-hour special now, featuring a very unusual choice. Not sure I should spoil it. (I like to tell myself people are on the edge of their seats, wondering who will be next 🤣)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm

I know it's usually complicated. My college station has a RICH history of recordings of local and national acts and there's conversations all the time about how to manage all that music.

Yes. I bought it when I was in high school (right around the time I was listening to Good Morning Vietnam) and I was disapppointed that it wasn't the original, but I came to appreciate it, even after it became slightly warped.

not sure if the AFRS would really allow DJs to play anti-war songs, but even if they didn't, the character Williams created, out of the legend of Adrian Cronauer, would definitely have tried to sneak them in, anyway...
