All this Salem talk has this Mid-Valley kid confused. I forget about the OTHER Salem. (Or, perhaps this is the OTHER Salem?)

Hey, I got to Salem, Oregon in 1980, but did not get to Salem, Massachusetts until the morning I first visited WMWM
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:13pm
Austin Rich:

You have a 1980 Salem aircheck? That would be interesting to hear...
Avatar 👻 8:14pm
MarkTime:

D'oh! I should say, the morning BEFORE I got to WMWM. Totally missed it in three previous Boston visits.

Sadly I don't think so. I might not have any from Eugene even from spending an entire week there in 1980

Yo Mr Time! This is the sort of public radio I was listening to around this same time, when I was stepping away from rock and rap for a bit and digging into the roots.

Hulloh! I wound up tracking down and recording many blues programs for Bob my last couple years in the Chicago area ... some on college stations, and some on commercial stations even

I feel like every station I've ever been at had a Blues Show like this. It's like a comfortable sweater; if there isn't a blues show around, I sort of wonder what's wrong...

I think the "Panic on 13th" website has some vintage punk radio shows from Eugene in the 1980's. But the last time I checked the files were not easy to download, for some reason. Hopefully he'll fix that at some point.

I don't recall much blues radio in the San Francisco area in the 1980s, even at KALX or KPFA. When I was on KALX they tried to steer me more towards punk

“Weekly World Blues” is an excellent show on the mothership.

While I was listening to radio in the 80's, I didn't get on the air until the 90's, and by then, every genre had managed to populate other spots on the schedule, even at the smaller stations. I remember there being a huge uproar over the need for another Grateful Dead show on my first station, and how that fight lasted for the better part of a year. I think in the end the Dead Show got on the air, because: it was Eugene in the 90's.

Oh, god! A radio spot for a inde-record store! Rare, indeed!

I don't think I ever played CDs on the radio
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:36pm

I assume by the mid-80's, most stations started using CD Players. Or am I wrong? They were commercially available by then.

KALX still just had turntables, carts, a cassette player, and I had lots of fun with the reel-to-reel
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:39pm
Austin Rich:

↳ MarkTime @8:38
I still have a box of reels, and a reel to reel player, but most of the stations I've been at didn't have them anymore.

Just in the last few weeks, I finally got around to digitalizing the Sinatra tribute radio cassettes from the 1998 trip
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:41pm

I played a few Sinatra records on my show, the first one after he passed. Probably around this date of this tape!

KALX still had a monophonic production studio while I was there ... they rebuilt it for stereo only in 1986 or 87
Avatar 8:42pm
Don-O:

I assume they all didn't play those disco tracks for those Sinatra tributes....
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:42pm

That sort of makes sense. Stereo FM is expensive!
