One good thing about NYC elections is that we have ranked choice voting. That means in the primaries you can vote for who you most want while also voting for someone you like a bit less but has a better chance of winning.

Other than that, I'd say, expect it to be a bizarre mayoral race. I hope the Democrats don't self-destruct to the point where the Republicans have a good shot at capturing City Hall. The danger is there.

I have zero hope in anyone running for City Hall at this point, but maybe someone can change my mind. AOC has been such a huge fucking disappointment. I live in her district and she hasn't done jack shit for us, but found time to go to pro-Hamas rallies at Columbia. In the meantime I deeply resent needing a posse of heavily armed cops to *checks notes* celebrate Chanukkah in the pocket park near me with my local kehilah (basically too small and un-unified to be a congregation; think of it as "drop in Judaism"). I shouldn't need armed guards to light candles and eat donuts with 20 other people. I mean at least the cops were happy about the donuts.

Imagine that your apartment is on fire, you and your roomie are running to the fire escape and try to grab some books. You stand there as smoke fills the room arguing about whether the philosophy of Kant versus whoever had a better point regarding X Y or Z; the books catch fire and you are at risk of burning to death, but NOT until you WIN your side of this Very Important Academic Argument! A risky complacency. It can't happen here until it does. Trump did considerably better in NYS, even NYC, in 2024 than in 2020. I hear quite a bit of talk from people around me about how scared and sick and tired of crime. Pick a defund-the-police Democrat as the mayoral candidate, and they may well go Republican.

That's true. For them, the public is a fiction created by the left. For them, there are only individuals, and if they can't hack it they're not working hard enough. The idea of no taxes is predicated on no services. So the gov't. can concentrate on what it does best: doling out perks to their own businesses and removing any obstacles in the way. The government usually IS on the boards of directors of large corporations. Either as corporate laywers before entering 'public service', as inside players while they are in gov't (ostensibly divested of such things), or as consulting liasons between gov't. and corporate free-rangers after they re-enter the private sector. Money is doing all the regulating, while there is an ongoing pantomime show of other things going on to mask it...usually...this is falling away now into brazen shamelessness. I think people in general won't really do much until there are actual armed thugs out on the streets with get-out-of-jail free cards. When it comes to THIS government, YOU probably are the enemy.

Gregory was born in troubled times. Cities and commerce had declined, and cycles of famine and the plague had depopulated the countryside in the wake of the emperor Justinian’s reconquest of Italy (535–554). The Lombard invasion of 568 triggered several more decades of war. Centralized bureaucratic control over civil matters continued to fragment, and this gave rise to local strongmen who held power at the expense of the civilian senatorial aristocracy. Usurpations of the property, rights, authority, and even regalia of others marked this fluid society.

(the city of) Rome was essentially depopulated until the 11c, what once held over a million people in the 4thc ce, only had less than 50k by the 8th c. (it wouldn't get to 1 million again until the turn of the 20th c. the byzantine (eastern empire) didn't suffer urban depopulation at all. however, west europe slowly grew a mercantile economy in the centuries after charlemagne regained power. by the time of the norma conquest, it was in full effect, although real urbanization was mostly confined to the italian states, and some of the hre towns/cities (also paris). london wouln't start exploding until the 13th c.

Nice. Yeah, supermarket shrimp are so convenient but I refuse to buy them because something like 99% of seafood in the US is mislabled, and shrimp especially involves slave labor in SE Asia at a staggering scale.

Rome always dissolved itself in the medium at hand. Where Rome was deployed, Rome stayed and became the place and the populace. It just got spread across what would later be so many time-zones, that it became foreign to itself. Plus, power at the centre became so self-serving and corrupted that wven subdividing it under the Tetrarchs didn't save it. And people found other things to believe in...and they went south too...

well, definitely when they were part of the caliphate, but after that it, it was frowned upon to trade africa and vice versa (and later depending on euro-ottoman relations, which is rather complex, as europeans usuallt allied mercantile interests w/ the ottomans, if it hurt their european rivals.

And I really need to get back to work but...I did a paper on the "mini renaissance" of the 1250s in Europe. Also still carefully reading "Viking Wars" by Max Adams -- amazing scholarly book on how the Vikings basically helped make the modern UK what it is.

Most of the book focuses around the time of the reign of King Alfred. Also read the Okjaringja Saga -- much of what we now call Scotland was pretty solidly Viking territory, and was also a staging ground for the Viking Wars.
