Hello Gary and bopos! Listener Gregory, I share your overexcitement -- ooooh, this episode is so up my alley. And I'll have to step away for a chunk of it (you'll find me in the archives tomorrow). Several years back, I went on a binge on these guys, assembling the half-decent overview I should have accumulated over the previous decades. 1969? France? Yes, please.

The Reality
Twinkies do in fact contain real food, they are truly baked, and the official shelf life is a mere 25 days. After this time, the Twinkie will continue to exist but will diminish greatly in taste and texture.

It is true that 25 days is a considerably longer shelf life than most baked goods, but this is achieved by avoiding the use of dairy products and the air-tight cellophane wrapper. Rather than being made with real cream, the vanilla cream filling in Twinkies is made with shortening, sugar, eggs, flavoring, and stabilizers, which spoil at a much slower rate.

I don't know what you can find now, but last decade I found a surprising quantity of AEC live video shows on the Y-Tube. Mostly shot for European tv, I would imagine. My favorite was a set from Hamburg somewhere in the 1980s, I think. Just amazing. One section sounded (to my fevered imagination) like a field recording of a Southeast Asian dockside market. But yeah, see what you can find nowadays.

I am encouraged that one or another variety of collectivism is on an ascent. I think it's okay for me to quote a not-yet-published work by a scholar who will appear this week on my campus. He [I'll keep him anonymous for now] writes, "There is no way to reckon with the current crisis [of liberalism] without recognizing the intellectual renaissance of Marxism among the youth today and the pertinence of class-based critiques of inequality after Thomas Piketty made the existence of the phenomenon undeniable. There is a Marxist left—and even a class-sensitive left liberalism."

@Gary -- You really have to see some of those old live sets. So many things would click into place for you. The theater of the live show was very essential to their work.
  8:17pm
Dean:

Speaking of Fred Anderson, just yesterday I listened to a recent acquisition, his Live, vol. V, from the Velvet Lounge, featuring Toshinori Kondo. Bowie's playing here brought to mind Kondo's highly processed sounds on that record, almost as if Bowie were also using electronics to treat his playing. (Is he?)

Im late. I once made tira misu out of twinkies (they came in a box that had individually wrapped twinkies in plastic, not plasticine, gross) the rest was classic mascarpone and kahlua, tia maria, espresso. Served it to foodies who work in fancy restaurants. no one noticed, and they ate it all. After, I told them it was Twinkie Misu
