Alan Davidson, the chief Kitchen Cynic, is a prolific songwriter with a great storytelling sense. Alan is a longstanding Folk/Psych practitioner from Aberdeen, Scotland with lots of recordings of every stripe under his alter-ego. His musical emphasis is on love, loss, and decay with an equal blend of humor and history. The latest (at this date) Kitchen Cynics release, "Distant Voices, Distant Songs," focuses on Alan's parents' stories with his own unique interwoven music. Irene caught up with Mr. Davidson just prior to his stint at Terrastock in Providence to record this lovely set. |

Mike Tamburo and Nick Schillace at WFMU's "studio in the clouds."  Next up, two sets by American Primitive practitioners. Nick Schillace is up first, then Mike Tamburo. Both are skilled fingerstyle guitarists who are traveling together this spring. Their music collectively is both serene and mesmerizing. You'll hear more than a few small musical references to Fahey, Basho, Bola Sete and the like. |

A devotee of the late fingerstyle guitarist John Fahey, Nick Schillace created some intricate sonic landscapes on his six-string while travelling to WFMU with Mike Tamburo. Mike Tamburo describes himself this way (from myspace.com) "A musician from a very young age, Tamburo is an accomplished guitarist, performing primarily on the acoustic guitar informed by his love for visual art and extensive studies of 20th century composition. In the late 90s Mike founded the band Arco Flute Foundation with Pete Spynda, Matt McDowell, Rob Dingman, and Jeff Komara. In 1996 he also formed Meisha with Ken Camden and Pete Spynda. Both bands recorded and released a number of records and toured extensively before eventually breaking up, leaving Mike to pursue his now thriving solo career. Currently Mike tours the world obsessively in support of his impressive debut Beating of the Rewound Son, released in 2005 on the Music Fellowship label to much critical acclaim. He now performs alone and is always recording, painting, making films and videos, listening to music, studying Enthobotany, thinking or watching television." |
