Favoriting September 4, 2013: PAUL HUMPHREYS from OMD live in the studio!

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

I've been a fan of Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark for about 35 years, so it was truly a delight to host Paul Humphreys at the WFMU studios for tonight's show! We played a bunch of OMD music and talked about the past, present and a teeny bit of the future of the band. Also discussed: Mellotrons, laptops, Genesis (briefly), and other topics. Use the links below (or the one above) to listen to the show, and share it with your friends!

waiting for these people to get outta the studio...they were supposed to be done at 9, now I'll probably miss my bus, and the wife won't be happy about that.
On the bright side, I get to catch the first set of efd before hoofing it to the port authority!

This Echo & the Bunnymen (I mean TV Ghost) is pretty good.

I know almost nothing about Algebra Suicide other than the fact that Lydia Tomkiw apparently grew up just a few miles from me and was a year older.

This TV Ghost is great. Haven't heard Algebra Suicide since picking up the Widely Distributed "Rehearsal for Retirement" sampler in a used bin in the mid-90s. I will now go re-unearth it.

Honestly, OMD did some of the best work in the Romantic/New/wave/dance Manchester thing. "Electricity" moves me, and I'm barely sure why. Usually makes me tear up a bit. Just love it every time I hear it.

Yes, charming!

Saw OMD on the Organisation tour in Philly in '80. Could swear it was just the 2 of em. Can the host confirm?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm

Barkevious, I'll ask but that was around the time I saw them at the old Ritz in NYC and Martin and Malcolm were definitely in the band.

Lovely song, Night Cafe, and the whole album is aces, but the video for this one seems to have created a certain amount of vigorous discussion among fans, self included.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- okay - in my ignorance of their oeuvre - it seems to relate to other (British) synthpop of the era - but to have a gravitas of mood that makes it seem more substantial - like someone who might've been on the bill w/ Joy Division
- & oh they just talked about that...

I'll say that a few other songs have that effect on me, particularly Souvenir and International, but Architecture and Morality and (particularly) Dazzle Ships have always been the OMD records that meant the most to me.

Nerdy question for Paul: Did they ever play live with the Pianotron that was used for the lead line in Electricity, or was it just used in the studio recording?
