Windsor techno is great too. I'm not sure but I'm guessing Detroit techno came first. I also imagine it was all part of the same scene. Radio bleeding over the Detroit River and easy border crossings back then.

Saying ...:

That name, though ... Boogarins ... a little distancing.
  1:36pm
Cecile:

The problem with pitchfork bands is that they are not coming from a I'm going to Make It On My Own place, but rather dammit my mom forgot to pick up my Xanax today and my shift at Starbucks starts in an hour kind of place.
  1:40pm
K:

I suppose whenever we make broad generalizations about things there is a danger of stereotyping. I get it with the Pitchfork dis, but surely there are worthy bands who Pitchfork might champion.
  1:43pm
Cecile:

Absolutely. But I've noticed for bands outside genres they are comfortable with, they usually are not in the vanguard of championing them. Which, come to think of it, makes them more than a little like Rolling Stone.
  1:45pm
Cecile:

Or Spin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm
Johnny_A:

I'm dating myself, but I remember when Spin was the big alternative to Rolling Stone.
Avatar 1:48pm
Jshatan:

Pitchfork is, for me, just one place to get info and opinions. Sure, they sometimes blow it and the writing could be little less up it's own you-know-what but that's probably true of my own blog as well! And they were up on Boogarins with a 7.1.
  1:49pm
Cecile:

I'm dating myself, I remember when Rolling Stone was kind of alternative.
  1:50pm
Cecile:

I respect that. But that doesn't stop me from making fun of it. :)
  1:51pm
Ralphine:

I remember when Creem was the alternative to Rolling Stone. I first started reading Rolling Stone in the Ben Fong-Torres, Hunter S. Thompson, and Rev. Charles M. Young era.

I don't read Pitchfork, but I went to a Pitchfork festival several years ago that I liked pretty well. GZA, Yoko Ono, Slint, New Pornographers, Sonic Youth, Mastodon, Grizzly Bear, and Ken Vandermark's Powerhouse Sound stick out in my mind.

these days i find i can't take seriously any review blog/site/magazine that gives number ratings (besides Resident Advisor, which i like, and is very straightforward and plain spoken in its reviews) - its become too much endless hype wagon nonsense. maybe its always been that way i just noticed it recently.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm
tim from champaign:

All chest thumping aside (on my part), it seems like bands that pitchfork champions and listeners who follow those bands is music for people who don't want to get dirty. For instance, there might be a pitchfork band that has classic rock tendencies but the band and/or their fans either aren't aware of or don't want to dig into something like Mountain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm
common:

@steve: that would be great!

Man, I've been grooving to Mandrill all week. But I haven't heard this. Fierce.
  2:17pm
K:

This Mandrill music to me is from the elusive category called "Hard Rock" which became a rather generic term without much clear meaning. And yes, this could be a "Hard Funk" sub-category. I suppose it evolved into metal, but that seemed more about technological "advancements" that helped to formulate a new "sound." Hard rock was old school, loud, distorted, some drug association. Obscure proponent+ Demian (ABC Dunhill) .
THanks for the Mandrill .... brought it up last week.
