Favoriting April 29, 2014: I'll have some Weltschmerz with a side of Schadenfreude, please.

No, Weltschmerz und Schadenfreude are not an ambiguously gay duo of magicians/entertainers who work with big cats in Vegas. The former, from German author Jean Paul Richter, means "World Sorrow" and encapsulates the anxiety caused by the ills of the world (among other definitions). The latter translates as "Harm Joy" in English and is usually defined as deriving pleasure from the failures of others. I've been experiencing a great deal of both lately.

My weltschmerz springs from a number of sources but the main is the latest report on climate change. Holy crap is it scary. It boils down to this: we're all going to boil, much sooner than we thought, unless we make some immediate, drastic changes in how we produce and consume energy. As Dr. Smith of Lost In Space said "We're DOOMED!". But climate change is nowhere near the top of anyone's worry list. Why? We'll delve into it tonight as I ask "What keeps you up at night?"

The schadenfreude? That's from the fallout over the Right's willing embrace of "Freedom Fighter" Cliven Bundy, whose racist attitudes could've been seen from space. But there's been even more racist schadenfreude lately: Frazier Glenn Miller, who murdered three Christians and yelled "Heil Hitler!", thinking he'd killed Jews, was arrested years ago for having sex with a black transvestite prostitute. And Donald Sterling, owner of the LA Clippers basketball franchise, was caught saying he didn't want blacks at his games (something tells me he'll soon get his wish) and revealing his slaveholder mentality. The NBA will hold a press conference today at 2 PM Eastern Time to issue their initial decision on this matter, which will probably be an indefinite suspension while they investigate further.

What about you? What or whom is bringing you great big helpings of schadenfreude these days?

Ken From Hyde Park:

Donald Sterling was banned for life and fined $2.5 million today. What a dork.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I don't take pleasure in it because it doesn't really fix the fact that it happened. This is one of those situations where you just do something about it and move on.

where do these idiots come from?

Mark Cuban ‏@mcuban 4h

I agree 100% with Commissioner Silvers findings and the actions taken against Donald Sterling

if his property was being taken away from him, he wouldnt get to keep the money that he will get from selling the team.

Hey conservatives mad at Sterling punishment:

30 billionaires self-governing an unregulated organization is literally a libertarian utopia
Avatar 6:25pm

he's defending rich racists with tea party lingo

GG Allin Thicke:

This guy is a complete moron. A genius in his own mind only.

Conduct unbecoming.

The market says the racist will make around $550 Million.

I think the difference between a sea and a lake would be more interesting discussion
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm
Andrew Waterloo:

As far as I understand you don't simply own a professional sports team, you buy into the league with the consent of the other owners, and the league.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm
Mike East:

I can honestly say I will never own any teams in the NBA.
  6:32pm
GG Allin Thicke:

Or the difference between a clipper and a laker
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm

I'm usually more concerned with the people who defend these guys.

i'm off to get some booze and Andrew Waterloo just pegged it along with Chris.

this show is bringing me some schadenfreude :P

@Cory No that was not what I was doing - I was doing the opposite. When poor people appropriate property it's an "uprising" - when rich people appropriate property it's called - what?

freedom of speech IS NOT freedom from consequences

So 30 years ago some unnamed black entertainers did not show enough outrage about a situation therefore all racist sentiment is beyond reproach. Got it.

Weltschmerz. With rye bread. Side of pickles. Here’s my ticket.

your german is beautiful! (i am a german instructor)
  6:41pm
ScottC:

@GG Good to see that your sparkling judgement is so concise in regards to my personality - I was making the point that rich people control language and perception to the point that they will do the exact same thing as land reformists and "revolutionaries" but it won't be called that unless we all recognize what is happening
  6:42pm
andre:

i do both!
  6:42pm
Eric:

I was responding to the guy who suggested arguing about the difference between an ocean and a sea
  6:42pm
Tim:

Even more telling is Sterling's comment, "Who makes the game? Do I make the game, or do they make the game? Is there 30 owners, that created the league?" Really? What is the game without the players? No one comes to the game to see the owners. Am I the only one who sees this as a reflection of the greater business climate as a whole?
  6:43pm
GG Allin Thicke:

His German sounds accurate, the German language should never be called beautiful.

There was a camp in Andover Twp that was part of the Bund. It closed down, like so many others, during the war. It is now the police station.

What do you comment critters think of UCLA giving back a huge donation the Sterlings made to research kidney disease?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm

@Danne D - didn't know about that but it sounds ridiculous. They gave it back to him? I say take the money and run, man.

Danne D, I think it's an optics thing. How can you be against Sterling's attitude AND accept his support?

Just go to the right bar and you'll meet those people.

K-Cups almost keep me up at night. So wasteful and expensive.. why are these things so popular?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm
Mike East:

@Andrew Waterloo - right?! how hard is it to brew a cup of coffee in a french press or even an autodrip?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm
Andrew Waterloo:

@Mike East and add a flavour shot? All that for stale coffee that costs 4x as much as it does freshly ground?
  6:56pm
GG Allin Thicke:

UCLA should take the money and donate it to a charity that fights racism and poverty.

David Koch's name comes up before PBS shows (Nova, etc) and that's confusing since his politics align him with anti-science tea baggers.
  6:57pm
