Favoriting August 12, 2014: Gotta Getaway
There are few finer words in the English language than "vacation". I've had good ones, I've had bad ones... but never one that had me thinking "I can't wait to get back to work!" I was on vacation last week (thanks to Matt Warwick for running the Times Square show) and, like you, I would've stayed on vacation had I hit the lottery.

You know this already: Americans get far less vacation than the rest of the industrialized world. Just wander around any tourist destination in the United States and you'll find Europeans, Australians, Asians - everyone but Americans. We pride ourselves on our work ethic, as perfectly crystalized by the recent "Poolside" ELR Cadillac commercial. I've actually heard people brag about how they don't take vacation. I don't like such people. Like shrinks, we should all have the month of August off. The last time I had anything more than a week off was when I was unemployed in the early 90's. We all know unemployment is not vacation: but giving workers more vacation time would actually mean less unemployment... and more creativity.

Recent research on creativity shows even a "vacation of the mind" has restorative effects, as outlined in a recent New York Times article.

Let's talk about vacations, the memorable ones (good or bad), your ideal vacation and the execrable "staycation". And tell me how you recharge during the day. Do you daydream? Do you power nap? Do you go for a long walk? Do Let's take an hour-long vacation together tonight.

I'll also be interviewing Rockabilly Revivalist Robert Gordon about his long career and new record I'm Coming Home (below).

I get the impression that management, in general, looks at the person who takes vacations as expendable and the person who is always at work as more valuable.

Mike East:

two years ago, we went down the shore for a week. I had such a good time and formed such great memories with my family, that I had to pull over and let my wife drive home because I was sobbing uncontrollably. It was a pretty intense emotional outburst and felt great.

Similar feeling this year coming back, but I was more controlled and had more of a depression coupled with it because I REALLY didn't want to go back to work. I was in a funk for about a week afterwards.

when i worked in an ad agency we got plenty of time off. but you didn't dare take it for fear of someone sitting in your chair when you got back.

I saw inexplicably stupid comments: "it wasn't a smart choice, it wasn't considerate of his family, he just gave up..." Some people just do NOT get it.

These were things I saw on the webs yesterday about RW.

I have heard there is a link between heart surgeries and depression afterwards. Perhaps there should be follow ups related to that involved with these procedures.
