Favoriting March 4, 2015: 3 hours of Stiff Records with guest Richard Balls, author of BE STIFF: THE STIFF RECORDS STORY

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Stiff Records was one of the most groundbreaking labels of the punk/new wave era, launching the careers of Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello, Madness, Lene Lovich, Ian Dury, Rachel Sweet, Wreckless Eric, and dozens of others.

British author Richard Balls -- who previously documented the life of Stiff star Ian Dury in a 1999 biography -- has put together a definitive history of the much-beloved label. I chatted with Richard about his blow-by-blow account of The World's Most Flexible Record Label, and of course you'll hear hit after hit from Stiff's glory days. Listen to the show, and find out why it took Balls to write about Stiff.

he was mentioned quite a bit earlier in the show, but he left the label a year after it started up.

I know for a fact that “Wham!” and “Frankie Goes to Hollywood” shared the same stylist who came up with those baggy t-shirts… And she’s alive and well in NYC.

I just have to say, the absolute smartest thing I did leading up to this show was to spend last night timing it all out. The first time I worked it out it ended up running until about 12:20am!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
coelacanth:

i did see Macgowan, but with an alternate band. (i don't think that counts as a "stiff artist"!)

Wow! Now I know Jona Lewie does this song! Yup, I appreciate yet don’t have the knowledge at times.

efd, that radio station in LI was WLIR, I'm sure, wasn't it? I don't Lene ever getting really big here, except to us geeks who read the credits in the liner notes.

I was lucky to be near decent radio during the 73-86 years. KTCL, Fort Collins CO, WORT, Madison, WI, KFML Denver (RIP, long ago.) There was also an early Alternative-format statin in Pittsburgh from 86'88 (forget the call letters)

Its hard to remember how difficult it could be to hear different music, pre internet. Still today, there's a lot to cut through.

Thanks efd and WFMU. Pledging again soon!

I wouldn't trade the modern state of the industry for the bad old days at all. I mean, limited as it was, the 80's did have one of the greatest varieties of music in the top 40 since the 60's, but while we're scaling down from musicians having their own private planes, we're having many more musicians scaling up to being able to make a better income from music.

“Its hard to remember how difficult it could be to hear different music, pre internet. Still today, there's a lot to cut through.” Indeed. Mixed feelings on how the Internet has opened up the world to more music and creativity, but I think it’s all for the better.

I've been regularly listening to various shows on WFMU over the past 2 years. After Irwin's show on industrial musicals, this is the best show I've ever heard. Interesting subject matter, knowledgeable guest, the best music, you can't ask for much more. Evan, thanks!
