Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from March 18, 2016 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Where are we all on the Latin-derived plurals: data is/are? media is/are?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm
Parq:

People make the same mistake with the title "Attorney General". They don't realize that "General" is an adjective, so they say "Attorney Generals" and not "Attorneys General". Remember when the Repubs decided this gave them the opportunity to aggrandize themselves and started referring to Bush's AG as "General Ashcroft"? The Dems actually fell for it and started referring to Clinton's pick as "General Reno". For a brief, horrible moment, it looked like that atrocity would actually catch on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm
listener james from westwood:

Lane, I feel RBIs" is one of those things that usage has sanded down to acceptability or tolerability.
Ted Leonard!!!
Jeff: It varies from publisher to publisher and style guide to style guide. Best to be consistent within the MS once you get a directive. The tower of plural "data" in English usage is under siege, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm
listener james from westwood:

I am actually tracking use of singular/plural "data" in the current MS to see which way the author leans. Publisher has no preference and the author's previous book is inconsistent. One more datum for the checklist. ;)

Or is it something like the way the election returns used to be done from the old machines in NY, where when the polls closed the inspectors did an unofficial tally, and then later there was an official one? @Listener Robert
All the pledges that come in over the telephone are hand-written on cards. Someone then has to type the info into the database. Nachum's show on the last Friday of the marathon (his last day of marathoning) generates many hundreds of such pledge cards. It takes many hours to get them entered into the system.
  1:57pm

Tnx again, Doug. So can I take it that the Web pledges are totaled automatically?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm

Yep. Web pledges go right into the system. Unless there is a problem (such as a pledge to one show winning a prize to another show). Then it gets flagged and pulled out for "fixing."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm
joe:

@Robert I can speak to the fact that a lot of JM's pledges tend to come in by phone. I've seen it they keep that group of phone workers on their toes. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm
listener james from westwood:

Could it be safely said that that YLT album would not exist without WFMU? I reckon it could.
  2:03pm
Listener Robert:

Actually I gather from the description that indeed it MUST work something like the old election canvas, with their unofficial & official tallies. There must be an unofficial one to report on the show, and then later there's an official one. With the canvas sheets it was carbon-like copies; I'm guessing you use the same pledge cards but they're collected twice -- once for a sum for anmt on the show, then again to add into the total. And some of the pledge cards must get handled another time, when there's a drawing for a show's prize.

So theoretically you COULD "find money under the couch cushion" if a card gets lost in the shuffle.

I just pledged to this show and my receipt said my pledge was credited to Bryce

Listener Robert:

I mean, it's not actual $, just an acc'ting of it.

But election returns are another matter with the relatively new machines in NY. When they were instituted (I was an inspector at the time), I'd assumed the printout at the polls was just the UNofficial tally, and that the OFFICIAL tally would be made at the office from the flash memory that was collected separately from the machines. Since then I learned that official tally was based off the printouts made that night at the polls, which is a bit scary.

Joe, "that group of phone workers"? Does the JM stream have its own phone room somewhere?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm
Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Robert
It is the same phone room, but a different crew of phone answerers. Each show has a new or mostly new crew of volunteers in to answer the phones.
  2:13pm
Listener Robert:

Wait a minute, that can't be, because Nachum gives out the same phone #. So you must mean "that shift of the volunteers".
