Tony Coulter:

Welp, despite what I said last Tuesday, I won't be playing 7" records today — Singles Going Steady is next week, not this week! SO, instead it's ... more French stuff! The records I didn't get to for reasons of time, not quality....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am
Jeff Golick:

This listener, who missed the prior two weeks due to work-related reasons, is pleased with the change.

Bonjour!

Delired Cameleon Family, a prog gem.
Avatar 11:59am

Hiya, Dean!

The film it's a soundtrack for is pretty great too....

Heya Tony, would they call this "Frog Rock", kinda like Kraut Rock? Or does that cross the rudeness line?

Hola, Carmichael, JtotheK, & βrian!!

I'm callin' it Frogrock -- with the full knowledge that that's a totally stupid name (which no one uses, btw).
Avatar 12:06pm

I think the name's got legs...froglegs, that is.

There are some good Steve Lacy albums on the Saravah label.
Avatar 12:34pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Jeff Golick: Playing three weeks of this stuff is helping my French pronunciation a bit, I think. I'm actually painfully aware of how bad it's gotten compared to when I was a kid when I could actually speak French (my parents sent me to a bilingual school).
Avatar 12:34pm
Tony Coulter:

Almost all my favorite Lacy albums are on Saravah....

@Tony: Helene Neu has a great youtube series on pronunciation: www.youtube.com...
Avatar 12:41pm
Tony Coulter:

Thanks, βrian. Actually, it's not so much that I need pronunciation pointers as that my mouth can no longer form the sounds my brain knows it should be forming.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm
Jeff Golick:

"my mouth can no longer form the sounds my brain knows it should be forming" -- only replace "mouth" with "brain," and "sounds" with "thoughts"

Hey there, George!
Avatar 12:52pm

@ JeffG: Never went by "Cool-Tear," no -- but I will say that before Anne Coulter emerged from her rathole it was far more common for people to mispronounce my name. I do have that to thank for....

Tony Coulter:

"thank her for"....
Avatar 12:54pm

And by the way, Coulter is not a French name -- it's Scottish.
Avatar 12:57pm

It's the name of a Scottish town -- apparently pronounce "Cooter" by ye olde inhabitants.

Folks mispronounced Coulter? Weird. But then I had high school mates with that name.

Avatar 1:47pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Mayuko! Nice to see you here!
Avatar 1:52pm
Tony Coulter:

@ βrian: The lucre is most definitely not shimmering -- in fact, it's not coming in much at all and I and the station are now way behind goal-wise. Something must be blocking the pipes. WE NEED PLEDGES to, um, unblock our pipes and get the cash flowing again....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm

How many Zheul-groups were there?
Any idea?
All connecxted with the mothership?
Avatar 1:56pm

I can't help but think it's harder, this being an election year. I dunno.
Avatar 1:56pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Guido: There are MANY Zeuhl (or partially Zeuhl) groups, some with no connection to Magma. Off the top of my head I'd say there are at least 30.....
Avatar 1:57pm
Tony Coulter:

... that's including groups from other countries and more recent outfits....

If only Bernie would stump a little for WFMU ...
Avatar 2:02pm
Tony Coulter:

Thanks, Dean! I am, of course, not trying to guilt-trip anybody -- especially those who already gave. Just hoping this silent marathon thing picks up steam sometime soon -- we really do need your support to keep things running -- and that most certainly includes the streams, which are expensive to maintain.

hi, were Cassiber French, and did you play them already?
Avatar 2:10pm
Tony Coulter:

Hi. Cecile! Nope, Cassiber were German ... plus one English gent: Chris Cutler (of Henry Cow, Recommended Records, etc)
Avatar 2:11pm
Tony Coulter:

Saw 'em in New York ages ago, btw -- wuz great.
Avatar 2:11pm
Cecile:

Oh, dang. I guess I just like an excuse to ask someone to play Cassiber. But did you play Etron Fou already?
  2:11pm
Dean:

Shylock were a great French band, except weren't they Swiss?
Avatar 2:12pm
Cecile:

I was blown away by the record. I was in the middle of my rap/SST days when I reviewed it for WCBN, and it still blew me away. I should buy it.
Avatar 2:14pm
Cecile:

In other news, I did my Ancestry DNA test, and am not directly very French at all, which I suspected.
Avatar 2:15pm
Cecile:

Mostly English-Irish of all things!
Avatar 2:16pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: Yeah, Shylock were great -- and real frogs I think, not Swiss. There are so many great French '70s bands I haven't gotten to that I could easily do a Part 4 of this special ... but I won't because ... well, come on!
Avatar 2:16pm
Cecile:

And 2% Finn.
  2:20pm
Dean:

I guess so. Gialorgues is in France. Not sure why I've thought Swiss all these years. Maybe it's because I thought they recorded the album in Switzerland. Maybe it's because the record has a hole in it, like the cheese.
Avatar 2:24pm
Tony Coulter:

This show's pledge-o-meter has not gone up AT ALL since noon. France must be hanging its head in shame. I REALLY need to get some pledges coming in!!! Please help out, if you can -- any amount helps and will be greatly appreciated!
Avatar 2:27pm
V Priceless:

@ Cecile: did you notice Diane reached her silent fund-raising goal? Strong show of Kamikaze solidarity! Ha!

@ Tony: I've noticed the pledge meter not updating in 'real time', like it used to in the past, at least from the listener end of things! I just pledged about 15 minutes ago - no change!
  2:29pm
Dean:

I share VP's observation. I donated to Doug's show Friday and the o-meter didn't budge for quite a while. Of course, it's possible it wasn't calibrated to register my contribution, but it has subsequently jumped a percentage point.
Avatar 2:30pm
Cecile:

No, I didn't. Good for her! Her going off the air has contributed to my crappy autumn mood. I know she'll be back. But right now, I'm sulking.
Avatar 2:31pm
Tony Coulter:

@ V Priceless: Yeah, I've noticed my pledge-o-meter not going up after people say they've just made pledges. Possibly they are not actually going to my show due to some programming bug, or perhaps, as you say, there is a delay. Either way, a pledge is a pledge! (By the way, I can't see who's pledging, so I can't check.)
  2:32pm
βrian:

Prière de verser une petite somme au bénéfice de cette éxperience freeform — WFMU.
Avatar 2:32pm
Cecile:

I did make sure to earmark part of my small pledge to her show!

I just have to wait until the end of the month just in case someone in my family or circle of friends gets sick or passes. No one should, but I never expected a lot of stuff to happen this year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm
Jeff Golick:

In light of the fact that you cannot see who has pledged, and that the pledge-o-meter doesn't move in real time, allow me to mention that I have just contributed a bazonkatillion dollars to the station.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm
Jeff Golick:

Do you think people yelled "Luuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuc" as his shows.
